Homage/tributes and appreciation for Akira Toriyama . Updated 28th march 2024.

Post by sangofe » Mon Mar 11, 2024 7:23 am

With the recent news of Akira Toriyama's shocking passing I was thinking it would be a nice thing to have a thread to show homage and appreciation for the great artist he was. I am not an artist but I have seen art showing Akira Toriyama. Maybe it would be an idea to post art you've made or seen online that shows the great master Toriyama. Or just write a short message to say what he meant to you and how his work has affected your life in positive ways. I will be starting by trying to put the immense importance his works had on me.

There's so much more art pieces so I'll just link them to not clutter this thread too much. If you would like them to show in this thread comment and I will edit the thread for that, but the ones I put up stood out to me.

Akira Toriyama and the world of Dragon Ball has meant the world to me. Not only did I grow up with this series, but it has got me through some of the worst times in my life when I was being bullied, and with my recent (only last Wednesday) diagnosis of depression (which I suspected I had throughout my life) I feel more grateful than ever I've been able to have so many great memories watching Goku and his friends push themselves to their limits to overcome adversity and go on this journey with them one last time with Toriyama at the helm in Dragon Ball Super because this series is the greatest non-medical therapy I could ever ask for, as it always inspires me to push forward. Even when I'm having a bad day watching Dragon Ball always makes me feel a little better.

Now I may have gone on a bit longer than expected, but I find it challenging to put everything this series means to me into a few words, particularly as it pertains to the question of Toriyama as an artist. I may not be someone you could call an artist, but I did love drawing growing up, did Art as a subject all throughout school and while I was decent at it I haven't drawn anything for a while. Mainly because my family life does keep me busy and I can admittedly be a bit lazy sometimes but I am considering drawing something in honour of Toriyama when I can, as when I have dabbled in art the man was very much an inspiration for me as he has been for countless mangaka and artists more generally around the world for decades.

But once more I must say thank you so much for everything you've given us Toriyama, you will never be forgotten.

Thanks to Dragon Ball:

I was introduced to drawing
Akira Toriyama was my first influence. He was one of the reasons why I decided drawing as my main hobby and even inspired me (along with other artists and aesthetics) to find and develop my own art style.

Like many people, I've drawn his characters anytime and anywhere.

I still draw but not as much as before because I'm too busy as a web developer but whenever I've got some free time, I either draw one of his characters or draw something inspired by his work.

I could connect with other people
As someone who was diagnosed with Asperger's Syndrome (I know the term is no longer used but hey, I got used to it), I was expected to be someone who couldn't connect with anybody but I've proven this was untrue thanks to Dragon Ball.

I met a lot of people whom I shared the franchise as an interest, both in real life and here.

I guess it happened with other Kanzenshueers on the spectrum as well.

I spent good times
Specially with my older brother, I stayed up late to watch Dragon Ball on Toonami with him, I watched Super episodes as they premiered with him, I played the games with him (we're waiting Sparking Zero) and went to the recent movie premieres with him (except for SUPER HERO, when both of us decided to not go)

There are other relatives whom I shared good times with like my maternal cousins with their Dragon Ball themed birthday parties or the visits of my uncle Richard, who is a big fan of Dragon Ball.

Funnily enough I too have Asperger Syndrome (now known as Autism Spectrum Disorder) but I agree, I have lived with issues like people underestimating me socially and in other areas. Dragon Ball has definitely been great in that regard, as I've been able to bond with lots of people over it, mainly in school, less so at second level because it wasn't "cool" to like the series as a teenager, but then in college I was pleasantly surprised to see people being open about their love for the series again.

Yeah, there will be always that kind of people who tell us as kids or even, as teenagers or adults that "doors will be shut for us" but then you remember that they aren't shut forever or weren't shut at all, because you can be the "key" that opens them.

I know it because I've been through that kind of shit too.

In my country, Asperger's Syndrome's investigation and awareness isn't as advanced and spread as other countries. In fact, you're now quoting to one of the first generation of children who were formally and officially diagnosed with the syndrome in the country (before us, the only people diagnosed were adults, in their 30s or 40s, who weren't aware they had it.)

Back then, the only association about the syndrome that existed was Asociacion Argentina Asperger, which was just founded a couple of years before my diagnosis.

So before the early 2000s, Aspergers was an almost unknown subject in Argentina.

I'll never forget Akira Toriyama. He was one of theses rare artists to be skilled in both art and storytelling. The fact that to this day nobody has managed to emulate him at 100% speaks volumes at the level of his talent. As it wasn't enough, his was as much humble as he was skilled. A quality that resonates a lot with me. His human qualities are what made the news of his death a lot more painful for me. Although I never met him as almost everybody here, his soul transpired so much from all of his pieces of work that it was like he was in the sale room as me. It makes me genuinely felt an authentic sadness, a thing I never felt anout any other celebrity out there.

Rest in peace Toriyama and thank you !
Thank you so much for your work and having dedicated your life so we, spoiled fans, will be left with this amazing universe you created.

Haven't had time to draw something specifically as a homage to Toriyama, although I'd like to. For now I'll just share some old Dragon Ball illustrations I've done:
They're not amazing, but I must say thank you to Toriyama for inspiring me to try, no other show ever pushed me as much to do my best as Dragon Ball did.

Very abridged:
- Dragon Ball helped me get through horrible days of middle school
- Lord Slug was first import DVD in 2003
- Half of Saiyan Saga DVD bootleg boxset made me realize bootlegs are not just Verbatim cases with titles written with marker on disc :)
- Both Dr.Slump and Dragon Ball made me serious fan of manga :)
- Finally, thank you for countles hours of Chrono Trigger on both SNES and NDS, Dragon Quest/Warrior series with excellent designs of heroes, villains and vehicles :)
