Error?

Post by Lavender Saiyan » Sat May 05, 2007 4:31 am

I just realized something. Cell says the Cell Games is going to be in "10 Days" on the 17'th. That's impossible, if the Androids attacked on May 12'th. I believe it took Goku, 2 days, was it (please correct me if I'm wrong)? To get better from the heart Virus. That makes it May 14'th. Then Trunks & Vegeta went into the ROSAT for a day. May 15'th now. 10 Days would be May 25'th.

So, what's the deal? Is there an error on how long the wait for the Games'd be, or is that date of the 17'th Messed up?

Isn't the 17th the day Cell made the announcement?

I recall the narrator saying, at the beginning of the Cell games, "The morning of May 17 has arrived..." or something to that effect, and being confused the first time I heard it... though I remember somewhere around here someone saying that this discrepency(sp?) was addressed in ... an interview? Daizenshuu? The kanzenban re-releases? Meh.

And there was a few unexplored days during which Cell hunted humans and the Artificial Humans toiled around. I never thought about too much because my pickiness was focused on other aspects.

No...

Cell's TV Announcement:

"Nine days from now, on the 17'th, at noon."

Narrator. the day of:

"Until finally, the dawn of May the 17'th arrived."

Well, actuaklly Viz says "The dawn of M__ the 17'th" for some odd reason.

Huh, I'd never noticed. I know that the Daizenshuu corrected this in the time-line, though.
Daizenshuu Time-line wrote:767 A.D. May 12th All of the Androids appear.
Cell shows up later that day.
Piccolo and Kami fuse.
Piccolo is temporarily the strongest character.
Goku suffers from his viral heart disease.
The Cell of the present is destroyed along with Dr. Gero's underground lab by Krillin and Trunks.

767 A.D. May 15th Goku's heart disease is cured by the medicine Trunks brought from the future.
Vegeta and Trunks enter the Room of Spirit and Time.

767 A.D. May 16th Cell reaches his second stage.
Cell reaches his perfect form.
Goku and Gohan enter the Room of Spirit and Time.

767 A.D. May 17th Cell announces the Cell Games to the entire World.
Goku and Gohan exit the Room of Spirit and Time.
Piccolo enters it.

767 A.D. May 18th Piccolo exits the Room of Spirit and Time, Vegeta enters it again.
Gohan enters Lime's village and saves it from Barbon's evil intentions.

767 A.D. May 19th Goku and his family go for a picnic.
At around noon, Cell single-handedly destroys the Royal Army.
Dende becomes the new Kami.
Vegeta exits the Room of Spirit and Time.
Trunks enters.

767 A.D. May 20th Trunks exits the Room of Spirit and Time.

767 A.D. May 26th At 12 noon the Cell Games begins.
Goku dies a second time by sacraficing himself to save the Earth.
Gohan completely destroys Cell.
Which fits much better with the actual passage of time shown in the manga/anime.

That's because it was the imaginary month of "M", if I remember well, not the month of May.
That date (both month and day) was changed in the Daizenshû and the Kanzenban (as was the date of the Androids' first attack).

Really? Interesting, kinda stupid IMO. I mean Viz did go with May for the Android attack date. Also May for the day Piccolo took over earth.

It could be a typo or something lost in translation. In the French version, it's "M." instead of "M_", meaning May. Plus, like Lavender said, everywhere else they used the actual month of May.

No, I just checked, and it did say "Mの17日" ("the 17th of M") in the original Japanese. That was changed to "5月26日" ("May, the 26th") in the Daizenshû and the Kanzenban.
I thought the date of the Androids' arrival was changed as well, but it looks like I was mistaken. Only the date of the Cell Game was.

'Looks like Toriyama decided to come up with imaginary letter-based month names (akin to the characters' addresses, for example), forgetting that he had already used "real" months earlier in the series. So that eventually got corrected (probably while they were compiling a timeline for the Daizenshû?).

So there's no possibility that "the 17th of M" could mean May by Japanese standards? For example, in French that still works both ways. Could it be meant as an abbreviation in Japanese as well?

Nope.
(besides, how would you tell whether "M" stands for "May" or "March"?)

Maybe it was being how Dr. Slump had a few weird names for months and whatnot. Or like how in the YYH manga a few schools were referred to as N______ High School for some reason.

Well for French, March could be shortened to "Mar." Note that either is rarely done, though.

Yeah, but it's just "M", here.
And you just don't do that kind of things in Japanese anyway.

OK, but I have a question then. Did they actually say "May" when Trunks announced the Androids arrival?

Well, "gogatsu" literally just means "fifth month," but that would equate to May when one goes by the Gregorian calendar. Perhaps to take this as a basic assumption is a bad idea, but it seems like Toriyama himself acknowledged that he was in error with the original verison, considering it's corrected in the rerelease of the manga.

Well, it doesn't mean that he personally made the change, though I doubt that it would be made without the people at Shueisha at least running it by him first.
