The home planet of the Saiyans which was destroyed by Freeza in Age 737. Prior to the coming of the Saiyans, the planet had been known variously as Planet Plant or Planet Tsufru by its original inhabitants. The history of Planet Vegeta is at times ambiguous with multiple explanations given for its conquest by the Saiyans and its eventual destruction. Some of the ambiguities, such as the planet being destroyed by a meteor or by its own God may have been deliberate propaganda planted by Freeza's empire to keep the remaining Saiyans in line.
General Overview
In the distant past, Planet Vegeta was known as Planet Plant, the home of the peaceful Tsufruians (or their predecessors). The planet is attacked by the space pirate Chilled, but the peaceful natives are saved by Bardock who had been somehow thrown back in time during the planet's destruction. In his rage, Bardock transformed into a Super Saiyan, perhaps starting the story of the "Legendary Super Saiyan" that would be well-known by Freeza and the latter-day Saiyans.
Over time, the Tsufruians become an advanced civilization. Around Age 550, a wandering group of Saiyans arrive at the planet and are welcomed by the Tsufruians. The origins of these Saiyans are unknown. In the decades that followed, the Saiyans learned from their neighbors and became more intelligent, while the Tsufruians developed technologies suitable for warfare including scouters, tanks, and laser-weapons. The Saiyans also became more violent.
By the early 700s, the Saiyans remained the minority species on the planet and tensions were high. Some Saiyans felt that the Tsufruians  treated them like slaves, while the Tsufruians were concerned about their neighbors' increasingly violent nature. A Saiyan leader named Vegeta rose up and led a rebellion against the majority Tsufruian population of the planet, led by King Tsufru. The Tsufruians fought using advanced weaponry, while the Saiyans had their natural battle power. The tide of the battle is turned when a once-every-eight-year full moon appears over the planet, enabling the Saiyan warriors to fight as Great Apes. In these final days, the Tsufruians launch two emergency solutions. First, Dr. Raichi creates Hatch-Hyack, a “hatred-amplification device” he intends to use as a weapon to eradicate the Saiyans. He is killed before he succeeds and the device is launched into space with his corpse inside. Tsufruian scientists also create a parasitic life form based on King Tsufru's genes and blasted off into space. This parasite would eventually become the villan Baby. Ultimately, the Tsufruians are defeated and Vegeta appoints himself "King" over the newly-renamed Planet Vegeta.
In their newly conquered lands, the Saiyans developed a class-base system based on potential battle power at birth, with children sorted into categories such as "Elite" or "Low-Level". They also adopt Tsufruian technologies such as the scouter, although Saiyan scientists make their own advances such as the creation of the Saibaimen, living weapons that could be sprouted from seeds. Quickly however, Saiyan technological and cultural progress stagnates. They elect to become mercenaries, heading out into space to fight and gain new wealth and technologies.
In Age 731, almost immediately after their triumph over the Tsufruians, the Saiyans and Planet Vegeta are annexed into Freeza's empire. He rules over them by force and intimidation. King Vegeta's son, Prince Vegeta, is forced to do work for his new overlord. In the years that follow, there is almost continual unrest among the Saiyans as they chafe under their new overlord.
Only six years later, Freeza decides to annihilate the Saiyans, ether due to instructions from Beerus, concerns that Saiyans as a group could come to defeat him, or a combination of both. He and his men briefly face a pair of uprisings led by King Vegeta and Bardock. Neither represent a threat and Planet Vegeta is destroyed. Only a small number of Saiyans survived due to being off-world: Prince Vegeta, Nappa, Raditz, and Son Goku. (In movie continuities, Tullece, Paragus, Broli, and Tarble also survived the planet's destruction. In the Episode of Bardock special, Bardock survived by being catapulted backwards in time.) In order to keep the remaining Saiyans loyal, Freeza spreads the story that the planet was destroyed by a meteor.
Despite its small size, the planet had 10 times the gravity of Earth. It also had a moon whose orbit only made it full once every eight years.
