Synopsis
Raditz kidnaps Gohan, and as Goku and the others formulate a plan, Piccolo appears! Since Raditz is an obstacle to his plans for world domination, Piccolo offers to temporarily join forces with Goku to defeat him. Goku agrees, and the two use the Dragon Radar to track Gohan via the Four-Star Ball on his hat. Landing before Raditz, they are overwhelmed by his power, and dumbfounded to learn that the remaining two Saiyans are even stronger.[1]
Summary
Part A
Goku is on his back in the shoreline water at Kame House, clutching his abdomen in pain, while all of his friends look on helplessly. Raditz holds Gohan in one hand, and asks Goku whether he understands his instructions. He will repeat them, just in case: Goku is to kill one hundred Earth people and pile up their bodies on this island by tomorrow, and then Raditz will allow him to join their group of Saiyans. If Goku fails, Raditz will kill Gohan. Gohan cries for his father, and Kuririn tells Raditz he is a coward for using a child like that. Bulma agrees, and the Turtle Hermit adds that Goku would never kill anyone. Raditz is indifferent to the outcome; everyone on the planet will die soon enough. They have decided that they will target Earth when their current purge is finished. Three of them should be enough to purge Earth in one month. Raditz tries to convince Goku that it makes no difference if he kills them first. Goku reaches out to grab his ankle; Raditz reiterates that Goku really has no choice but to join them, but Goku begs him to return Gohan. Raditz tells Goku he is expecting a good answer for his sake, and warns Goku not to challenge him as he flies away; Goku's untrained battle power is no match for his big brother. Gohan cries uncontrollably, and Goku calls out to him; Raditz says he is looking forward to tomorrow.
Goku pounds his fists in the water in frustration; Raditz made a mockery of him. His friends rush to his side, and the Turtle Hermit apologizes that there was nothing they could do. Goku calls for Kinto-Un, and everyone tries to tell him not to rush off; as things stand, he will just be killed. The Turtle Hermit urges him to use his brain. They help him up and guide him to the porch steps. Bulma acknowledges the shock he must be in, discovering that he has a brother, and an evil one at that. Kuririn seems to think this makes sense; the guy was so strong. At that moment, Goku remembers that the Saiyan tail is a weakness; if Goku can grab his tail, that will sap his strength. The Turtle Hermit remembers this weakness, but Kuririn wants to know how Goku will manage to grab his tail. Goku admits he cannot do it alone; Kuririn is terrified that Goku will expect him to help, but the Turtle Hermit says they will do what they can, since Yamcha and Tenshinhan are not around.
Kuririn tries to convince himself that the three of them can pull it off; he asks Bulma to bring them back with the Dragon Balls if they die, but Goku reminds Kuririn that Shenlong cannot grant the same wish twice. Kuririn and the Turtle Hermit have both died before and cannot be wished back again. They try to keep their spirits up, pledging that they will still help. Bulma suggests that they ask Shenlong to save the world instead, but the Turtle Hermit doubts they can gather them all in one day. Goku says they will just have to make a surprise attack; they can use the Dragon Radar to track him via the Dragon Ball on Gohan's hat. Bulma pulls out the radar and notices that one ball is moving at great speed, but just then, it comes to a stop. Bulma is relieved; she was worried Raditz would take Gohan into space, but he is still on Earth. Goku is ready to go; Kuririn is still worried about their chances, but the Turtle Hermit points out that they are going to die either way; they might as well do all they can.
Just then, Piccolo appears above and mocks them for thinking they can handle this enemy. Everyone freaks out. Piccolo explains that he followed Raditz here; Goku is surprised that Piccolo has already met him. Piccolo says that there is no way Goku can win with those two; he will go with Goku instead. Neither of them stands a chance alone, but if they team up, they might be able to beat him. Goku wonders what has gotten into Piccolo, but Piccolo assures him that he has not suddenly become a man of peace; he does not care about Gohan either. Raditz is simply standing in the way of his desire to rule the world. Once they take care of Raditz, Piccolo is going to defeat Goku and take over the world. Goku says he will not allow that, but he thinks the part about teaming up sounds good. They do not have a choice, after all. Piccolo agrees; they will just have to put up with each other for a little while, even though it makes him want to vomit. Goku asks Bulma for the Dragon Radar and hops on Kinto-Un, asking Piccolo if he thinks he can keep up. Piccolo tells him not to be silly; his own method is a little different from their Bukūjutsu.
Part B
Kuririn is not sure whether he should be excited about this team-up or not; the Turtle Hermit never thought those two would work together, but it gives him hope that they will win. Bulma is not sure it is safe to trust Piccolo, and Kuririn agrees, but the Turtle Hermit thinks it is going to be a good show, so he asks Bulma if she remembers the location of the Dragon Ball that was on the Dragon Radar. At Mount Paozu, Chi-Chi straightens up Gohan's study books and wonders if he is having a good time at Muten Rōshi's house. She notices that he has not finished his homework and starts to worry about him.
At the crater where Raditz landed, Gohan tries to hide underneath the farmer's truck, but Raditz punches through the truck and picks the whole thing up with one hand, destroying it with a blast. Gohan starts crying again; Raditz tells him to shut up; he is a Saiyan too. He puts Gohan inside his space pod and exits the crater. He is going to find something to eat when he gets a reading on his scouter; there is a battle power of 710 nearby. He cannot see anything, but eventually he realizes the reading is coming from his pod. He writes it off as a malfunction and dismisses the signal on his scouter.
Goku and Piccolo approach the location; Goku thinks they should descend, but Piccolo thinks it is better if they approach from the air, so Raditz does not detect them on his scouter. Piccolo thinks it is likely that Raditz already knows they are coming, so Goku realizes they have no choice but to attack him head-on. Raditz is just finishing his meal when his scouter beeps again; he still sees the reading from his pod, but then he gets another reading from Goku and Piccolo, battle powers 322 and 334. Raditz recognizes one of them (334, since Piccolo's battle power was stated as 322)[2] as being Kakarrot's battle power, but he finds it hard to believe that Goku would come there; he has no chance of winning, and he does not know his location anyway. Raditz dismisses the scouter signal again, thinking it must be broken, but then it beeps one more time, and Raditz sees Goku and Piccolo approaching. When he realizes that his scouter is not malfunctioning after all, he also realizes that the reading from Gohan was legitimate. He still refuses to accept that a child could have a battle power so high.
Goku and Piccolo land and face off with Raditz, who recognizes Piccolo from their earlier encounter.[2] He asks Goku how he knew where to find him, but Goku sees no reason to tell him. Raditz then asks when they have come, and Goku says he has come to get Gohan, who is happy to hear his father's voice. Raditz asks if Goku really does not want to join them, even though he is a Saiyan, and Goku confirms that he is not interested. Gohan tries to escape the pod, but he cannot get out, and he starts crying again. Raditz asks Goku if he is really going to defy his brother, and Goku says he has no brothers. Raditz nearly crushes the fruit in his hand, telling Goku he expected him to be smarter; he is disappointed that Goku was foolish enough to think that he and Piccolo could defeat him.
Piccolo tells Raditz that is enough talk, taking off his cloak and turban, and as the cloak hits the ground, Goku is surprised to see that Piccolo has been training with weighted clothing, too. Piccolo says it has been a long time since he has felt this light Raditz notices that Piccolo's battle power has gone up to 408. Goku follows suit and takes off his weighted undershirt and boots, telling Piccolo that it is encouraging to have someone like him as an ally. Goku's battle power has gone up to 416. Goku thinks they might have a better chance now, but Raditz laughs and tells them they are out of their league. Goku tells him that strength is not everything in a fight; they have a strategy.
Raditz has had enough; the invitation to join them is withdrawn. He says Goku would just slow them down, and he is a disgrace to their family. He tells Goku to die, and attacks, getting behind Goku and Piccolo before they can react. They are able to bounce off and recover, but they are astounded by his speed. Raditz compliments their defenses, but he tells them their deaths are nevertheless imminent. He will increase the strength of his attacks gradually. Piccolo is still amazed that the gap between them is so huge, and Goku reminds himself that he just has to wait for an opportunity to grab his tail. Raditz tells them that whatever strategy they have come up with, they are still going to lose. Even if they were to somehow miraculously defeat him, the other two surviving Saiyans are even stronger than him. This news shocks Goku and Piccolo, and they seem terrified in the face of the upcoming battle.
