The Brief Return of Dr. Slump is a 40-chapter manga series written by Takao Koyama and illustrated by Katsuyoshi Nakatsuru, with editorial supervision from Akira Toriyama.
The series serves as a sequel to and continuation from the original Dr. Slump manga series, and originally ran from the February 1993 to September 1996 issues of Shueisha's V-Jump magazine (with one announced break in the January 1996 issue[a], picking back up against with chapter 33 in the February 1996 issue). Four volumes collecting all of its chapters were released from 1994-1996.
A single bonus chapter, illustrated by Masahiro Naoi instead of Nakatsuru, was published within the V-Fes '94 Bulletin Special, a promotional booklet produced in conjunction with V-Jump Festival 1994. This chapter was not included in the collected edition.
The series is notable for bridging the second trial run of V-Jump into its monthly reboot (running for its first two chapters in the final two issues of second trial run, and continuing with debut issue of the monthly reboot), its production using cel drawings, and continuing the story beyond the original manga series.
The series' title is often also translated by fans as either "Dr. Slump Returns For a Little While" or "Dr. Slump Returns, But Only For a Little While" or "Dr. Slump Returns For a Little Bit", though no official English translation/release exists for the series.

Production
Alongside the announcement and promotion of the sixth Dr. Slump film (set to premiere during the Spring 1993 Toei Anime Fair, also featuring Dragon Ball Z Movie 8), V-Jump's second issue from its second trial run also announced that a new Dr. Slump "illustrated story" would debut in the following issue:[1]
そして、2月発売のVジャンプからは、イラストストーリーの運載も始まっちゃう!!
Also, starting with the February issue of V-Jump, an illustrated story will also begin publication!!
The series debuted in the following issue, running regularly until its 40th and final chapter.
The script for the series was written by Takao Koyama, which was checked by original creator Akira Toriyama and Toei Animation producer Kōzō Morishita. Final decisions about overall story content was decided upon through discussions with these three. Based on the revised script, Katsuyoshi Nakatsuru provided the artwork for the series, including character designs and panel layouts. After consulting with Nakatsuru, Satoko Asai then handled the color specifications, and staff then applied the colors and completed the artwork.[2] Of particular note, Karte's family (who appears beginning with chapter 12) was finalized by Nakatsuru based on rough sketches drawn by Toriyama.[3]
Based on this production process, and as listed on each chapter title page and collected volume release:
- Koyama received the "Script" (脚本 kyakuhon) credit.
- Nakatsuru received the "Drawing" or "Painting" (繪 e) credit.
- Toriyama received the "Original Author" or "Original Work" (原作 gensaku) credit, indicating his role as the creator of the original Dr. Slump manga series. He additionally received the "Supervisor" or "Editorial Supervisor" (監修 kanshū) credit; as a point of comparison, Toriyama received the same credit many years later for Dragon Ball: Episode of Bardock, which was written and illustrated by Naho Ooishi.
- Despite the aforementioned production process outline, Morishita is not specifically credited.
Chapters
In line with the style established with the original Dr. Slump manga series, each chapter's title is followed by の巻 (no maki), indicating that it is the "volume" (or here "chapter") in which those events take place. This appendix has been ignored in the following chapter title translations.
Releases
Four collected volumes were released containing the primary 40-chapter serialization of The Brief Return of Dr. Slump (ten chapters per volume). Each volume's title (itself directly taken from a chapter title) is followed by の巻 (no maki), indicating that it is the "volume" in which those events take place. This appendix has been ignored in the following volume title translations.

Notes
- ↑ Splash text at the bottom of chapter 32 in the December 1995 issue states: 次号はお休みです. 2月号までバイチャ! ("We will be on hiatus next issue. Bye'cha until the February issue!").
- ↑ In the original V-Jump serialization, ellipses are present before the の巻 in the full chapter title. In the collected volume release, the ellipses are not present.
- ↑ In the original V-Jump serialization, ellipses are present before the の巻 in the full chapter title. In the collected volume release, the ellipses are not present.
- ↑ The name "Karte" is spelling out as-is on clothing in this and later chapters, though later supplemental material also uses the spelling "Karute" as well.
- ↑ "Mechanko" means "very" in Nagoya dialect, as Toriyama explains in his very first weekly author comment for the first chapter of "Dr. Slump" in its original serialization. As such, we have chosen to adapt this title as "Extreme Basketball".
- ↑ The cover date for this "V-Fes '94 Bulletin Special" is September 15th, but this does not reflect its actual release/street date. A splash at the end of this bonus chapter says to continue reading in the October issue; as such, we have placed it chronologically right before that respective chapter, and will aim to determine a concrete release date for this booklet.
- ↑ The word 杯, normally read as hai, is given furigana that indicates an English pronunciation of its direct meaning as "cup".
- ↑ In the original V-Jump serialization, no ellipses are present before the の巻 in the full chapter title. In the collected volume release, the ellipses are added in.
