It was really a matter of "when" and not "if" One Piece would get the boot from the Toonami block. It just failed to get an major audience from day one and it was costing Toonami money. I'm honestly surprised it lasted this long.Theophrastus wrote:https://twitter.com/ToonamiNews/status/ ... 2132989952

It really is sad. One Piece is a really good anime and Funimation have done a great job with it but unfortunetely the 4Kids dub is still haunting it and will most likely always do so.Theophrastus wrote:https://twitter.com/ToonamiNews/status/ ... 2132989952

Next month marks the 10th anniversary of that dub's cancellation. That's literally a generation of younger fans that would have little to no familiarity with that version. One Piece is just not a very appealing show in the US. Three cancellations is proof of that.sintzu wrote:It really is sad. "I like the money it brings in, but Dragon Ball Heroes is the worst. That's actually the real reason I decided to start working on new material. I was afraid Bandai would make something irredeemably stupid like Super Saiyan 4 Broly." - Akira Toriyama, made up interview, 2013.

I think a lot of it has to do with the art style.Super Saiyan Prime wrote:One Piece is just not a very appealing show in the US. Three cancellations is proof of that.
DBZ & Naruto are both really big in America and the one thing they have that One Piece doesn't is a serious art style and I think One Piece's out there, cartoonish style isn't as appealing as the more serious one that those 2 have.

With Tokyo Ghoul airing, I guess I can give it a second try. I try to watch the first two episodes of it when it came out and I didn't see the hype behind it. It felt very Shonen for a Seinen title in my opinion and I didn't find the main character that interesting. Tokyo Ghoul didn't do anything new that other series done before it like Parasyte, Devilman and 3x3 Eyes.

Re: Toonami 2014 DBZKai Ratings!
One Piece is one of my favorite things on this Earth, but I've only ever read the manga, never watched the anime. From what I've heard, the anime can be a bit of a slog to get through with all of the filler it contains (on top of it being almost 800 episodes long and counting), so maybe that's why it hasn't been doing so well on Toonami? Though, really, how good do they expect any show airing at 2:30AM to realistically do, ratings wise?sintzu wrote:I think a lot of it has to do with the art style.Super Saiyan Prime wrote:One Piece is just not a very appealing show in the US. On why One Piece never caught on here in the west, my theory has long been that it all boils down to comics (manga) being much more popular/mainstream in Japan than they are here. From what I've read across the interwebs, the reason why One Piece is so popular in Japan is because of the manga, not the anime. I mean, sure, the anime is still reasonably popular, but that's only because it's based on the massively successful manga. I've heard some people go so far as to say that the anime is more for kids, while the manga tends to appeal to everybody.
The reverse is true here in the US. Anime far surpasses manga in terms of popularity here, which doesn't bode well for something like One Piece. Again, this is based only on what I've heard, but it sounds like the One Piece anime isn't all that spectacular in that it's heavily bogged down by filler which ends up turning most people away; one friend I talked to seemed to relatively enjoy the show at first, but gave up watching it sometime during the Alabasta arc because he just couldn't stand the pacing anymore. So what ends up happening is that most people are turned off by the anime and it never goes any further than that. It's a damn shame, because the manga is one of the best things I've ever read/experienced, yet almost no one ever knows what I'm talking about when I bring it up. Sadly, manga, and comics in general, just aren't all that popular or mainstream here like they are in Japan. If they were, I firmly believe that One Piece would have caught on more than it has.
I must stress that this is all based on secondhand information that I have read scattered across the web and I am, in no way, passing this off as fact. It's simply a theory.
However, that's not to say that if the anime had been properly handled/marketed from the beginning that it couldn't have done better. I'm sure that if it had been given a proper adaptation/channel/timeslot straight away that it could have at least caught on with kids. As it stands, I don't think any show is going to flourish at 2 in the friggin' morning on a Saturday night.

It's an anime based on an ongoing manga so filler is to be expected.IAmTheMilkMan wrote:

This is true, anime based on manga are made to promote the manga in Japan while in the west it's the main product.
That's not entirly true but there are scenes that are a bit toned down in the anime. I don't know how far you are but there's a scene before the time skip with White Beared that's a lot more brutal in the manga.
I haven't read the manga, I've just been watching the anime and I'm almost done with the thriller Bark arc and I can tell you that it's really good. the water 7 arc is probably my 2nd or 3rd favorite anime arc.
The problem isn't the pacing, he/she just didn't like the characters and world that much to continue watching it.
Manga/anime in general is really good but a lot of people don't pay any attention to it.
The reason manga gets dragged down is because people probably think it's like comics where 50 years can go by and the stories are more or less the same as they were when they started. thanks to that the comic industry is crashing and burning right now.
Another issue it has is that the episodes they're showing have already been out on DVD for years.

Re: Toonami 2014 DBZKai Ratings!
The pacing of the One Piece anime gets dramatically worse as it goes on (starting, incidentally, around Thriller Bark - the arc Toonami finished up before deciding to drop it). It's been especially bad lately as they recently stretched out an arc that was 21 chapters in the manga into 26 episodes for the anime. Literally adapting less than a single chapter per episode.

Wow. I'm sure DST is to blame on some level, but those are some really bad numbers for Gundam and Hunter x Hunter (though JJBA didn't leave them much of an audience to work with).
Re: Toonami 2014 DBZKai Ratings!
Wow Samurai Jack smashed it and Super may have gotten a small bump from it. Kai is OK but man Gundam isn't doing great either.Lord Beerus wrote:TIME PROGRAM Viewers (000) A1849 rating A1849 (000)

It seems "Sand Whale and Me", that mini 5 minute show, is dragging down the DBKTFC ratings. Crap.

That's not what I'm seeing, and if anything it gives a good indication of how many are tuning in just for Kai versus Super being the lead in. An increase of almost 100,000 over a 5 min period is nothing to sneeze at.simtek34 wrote:It seems "Sand Whale and Me", that mini 5 minute show is dragging down the DBKTFC ratings. Crap.

Ya know, if Super's 8 PM airing never existed, then i'd think it's 11:30 airing would have much higher ratings than it has now...
