Funimation Live Youtube Q&A

Post by Saimaroimaru » Mon Mar 05, 2012 8:14 pm

So they answered my question about making DBZ Kai for the Buu saga.

Answer: Cell games was where Akira wanted to end the series. I thought it was the Freeza Saga.

Edit: They all but said that they think that the Buu Saga is filler.

To be fair, the misconceptions of "where Akira Toriyama truly intended to end the series" are relatively common. Which is partially why kanzentai wrote that guide to begin with, if I remember correctly.
A "rather haggard" translation of a line from Future Gohan in DBZ, provided to FUNimation by Toei:
"To think of fighting that is this fun...so, it was pleasant fight, as many as, therefore is a feeling which is good the fight where."

They just said that they liked the original Dub of DBZ the least among their dubs but liked Kai a lot. Something about how the standards of today are much better and that the VA have gotten much better.

To be fair, I don't expect the marketing folks to know the intricacies of the production schedule, editorial control, and eventualities of every series they license.

They do their best to answer the questions on the spot with as best a guess they can in as polite a way they can without alienating anyone in any way.

This is true, but it's frustrating nonetheless when you consider how many thousands of casual fans have been misinformed in that one moment, and may never have an opportunity to learn any better.

Thanks for that, that's what I wanted to know.

FUNimation's not going to do a custom Majin Boo Kai arc, glad they're staying with what TOEI gave them, the Cell arc.

As for where the series originally ended, by the manga, Majin Boo was the last arc of the anime/manga.

My fave arcs: Freeza > Cell > Saiyans > Artificial Humans

Raditz is a mystery for me, yes he's a Saiyan, brother of Son Goku, lived and was born on Planet Vegeta, worked for Lord Freeza but what else, Mr. Toriyama?
FUNimation 2015 Releases I want:
- Kai 2.0 on Blu-ray

Did I miss it? Did anyone ask about the original Dragonball Dragon-Boxes?
The Dragonboxes are like a middle aged woman who still looks good through simply taking good care of her skin and body with maybe a tiny bit of makeup while the Orange Bricks are like a middle aged woman who get's 50 tons of botox, makeup and plastic surgery in order to look younger and as a result looks even worse. ~ ringworm128

No, I was watching the event live and there was literally hundreds upon hundreds of messages going every second that they could never get to.
"I like the money it brings in, but Dragon Ball Heroes is the worst. That's actually the real reason I decided to start working on new material. I was afraid Bandai would make something irredeemably stupid like Super Saiyan 4 Broly." - Akira Toriyama, made up interview, 2013.

That is incredibly irritating to me that they didn't have their info straight. Sure, its not common knowledge, but the answer they gave perpetuates this misinformation. They are the official representatives of the franchise in North America, they should know the facts or say nothing at all. Dragon Ball Z has been their bread and butter for years. They should know more basic information about the production.

I'm not even so upset that they wouldn't know, it irritates me more that they would, presumably, pass off an impromptu guess as fact if they didn't know any better. "Will you make the Boo arc in Kai?" "Oh. Well, um, hmm... because that's where Toriyama wanted to end it. Phew. Next question" Granted, my interpretation of this scenario could be wrong, and they might honestly believe that is the case... but that's not even answering the question. As rights holders, I do agree they should at least be aware of why one of their properties was cancelled. A simple brush-off answer of, "Well, we just dub. We don't create our own properties," or, "That would be up to Toei to allow us to make original Dragon Ball content, and we have no deal at the moment," would have been far more standard, slightly more helpful, and far less perpetuating of rumors. Heh, I just hope that by the time I get to the Boo arc on my Dragon Ball Dissection that people have forgotten about this, and I'm not inundated by, "Why are you reviewing this? FUNimation said that Toriyama wanted to end after the Cell arc!"

Does this mean I have to update the Intended Endings Guide?

Bah, I'll let Hujio do it.

The main story of DBZ does seem to mostly come to a close with the end of the Freeza Saga. However, if it ended there, we would never learn about what happened to Goku and the 'hidden power' within Gohan would never be realised and thats something the story keeps throwing in every so often. It would be a pretty major let down if Gohans power was never explored.

The Boo arc doesnt really tie up any lose ends really other than the fact that Vegeta finally accepts that Goku is better than him. Unless I'm forgetting something else...

The 23rd Tenkaichi Budokai also wrapped up all the plot threads up to that point, though Toriyama explicitly said that was never intended to be the end of the series. In contrast, with the actual end of the series we ultimately ended up with, Toriyama says he intentionally had it leave things open and seem like the story could still go on. So whether or not a story arc wraps everything up doesn't necessarily have anything to do with whether it was supposed to be the ending.

Anyway, Toriyama has in fact never said anything about planning to end it specifically at the Freeza or Cell story arcs. All the rumors saying he did just boil down to people either asserting so without citing any evidence, or saying "I heard someone say they heard Toriyama say X"; none of the actual interviews with Toriyama mention such a thing. What he has said is that he originally was planning on ending the series after the very first search for the Dragon Balls, that after that he was going to have the series last 10 volumes or so (about to the end of the RR/Uranai Baba stuff and start of the 22nd TB, the way things actually turned out), that he was forced by his higher-ups at Jump to continue the series during its third year (so during the Piccolo stuff, roughly), and that he chose the name "Dragon Ball Z" for the post-23rd TB anime because he wanted to end the series soon (precluding the Freeza arc entirely, at least as we now know it, besides Cell and Boo). We also know that he was originally going to have No.19 and No.20 be the ultimate enemies in the android story arc, but the series ended up in its current form due to the objections of both his former editor (who didn't like 19+20, or 17+18) and current one (who didn't like Cell's first or second forms). So if anyone involved in Kai was really using "Toriyama didn't want to do X" as a reason to exclude stuff from the remixed series, we'd basically be left with...hardly anything. But what it really comes down to is that Kai wasn't making enough money, so it was cancelled. I do understand why the Funimation representatives would rather say Kai didn't cover the Boo material for artistic reasons, rather than admit that Toei essentially axed the series and there's zilch they can do about it, but I wish they wouldn't reinforce old baseless rumors.

Also, while it really should go without saying, it probably needs to be said that whether or not Toriyama originally planned on doing X doesn't have any bearing on whether X is any good or not. It's entirely possible for an author to plan a story out from the beginning and have it be crap, or totally change their original plans and have it be good. Certainly I don't think many people want to see a version of the android story arc that ends with 19 and 20, and the "Z" portion of the series remains the most popular despite Toriyama having never planned the series to go on nearly that long when starting out.

So in short, they said complete bullshit to hide the facts that Kai ended halfway because it failed in Japan and they can't do anything against it.

It's possible that was the answer they were given by Toei for why they ended Kai after the Cell Games. So I wouldn't immediately assume it was something they just fabricated.

There's no way that was what Toei told them. If they were curious, all it takes is a quick Google search or a visit to Kanzentai to find the answer. They short of it is, they didn't know the truth. What they thought was true was false. They never bothered to find the truth.

James Teal (Animerica 1996) wrote:When you think about it, there are a number of similarities between the Chinese-inspired Son Goku and that most American of superhero icons, Superman. Both are aliens sent to Earth shortly after birth to escape the destruction of their homeworlds; both possess super-strength, flight, super-speed, heightened senses and the ability to cast energy blasts. But the crucial difference between them lies not only in how they view the world, but in how the world views them.

Superman is, and always has been, a symbol for truth, justice, and upstanding moral fortitude–a role model and leader as much as a fighter. The more down-to-earth Goku has no illusions about being responsible for maintaining social order, or for setting some kind of moral example for the entire world. Goku is simply a martial artist who’s devoted his life toward perfecting his fighting skills and other abilities. Though never shy about risking his life to save either one person or the entire world, he just doesn’t believe that the balance of the world rests in any way on his shoulders, and he has no need to shape any part of it in his image. Goku is an idealist, and believes that there is some good in everyone, but he is unconcerned with the big picture of the world…unless it has to do with some kind of fight. Politics, society, law and order don’t have much bearing on his life, but he’s a man who knows right from wrong.
