DBZ Movie 8

Moa (モア): A pun that comes from Angorumoa (Angolmois) a prophecy from Nostradamus meaning The King of Terror. It is a popular trope used for bad guy's names on various media in Japan.
Angol (アンゴル): Same as above.

Planet Totokama: A pun for kamatoto, it means "pretending to be innocent", and "acting cute to guys".

GT Special

Paku (パック): From pack? As in a school pack? Since he is Goku Junior's school mate?

Manba (マンバ): Comes from Yamanba, a type of witch that lives in the mountains, has unkempt hair, and kills and eats unsuspecting travellers.
Rakkaru (ラッカル): Possibly from Karura, a divine creature with human torso and birdlike head in Japanese Hindu-Buddhist mythology.
Getto (ゲットー): Possibly from gecko or tokage (lizard) since he is a lizard guy.
Youmaou (妖魔王): Youma is simply one of the Japanese words for demon or other evil supernatural creatures; some fantasy series use it to refer specifically to evil faeries. So he’s just the “Demon King” or at least the “Youma King”.

Episode of Bardock

Chilled (チルド): Similar to Freeza and his immediate family, Chilled’s name is a cold-based pun, specifically on the sensation of coldness. In fact, his name is written in katakana exactly the same as the word for which he is named, with none of the order alterations or vowel elongations typically seen in name puns.

Kavira (キャビラ): Chilled’s henchmen Cavira gets his name from non-fertilized sturgeon roe, better known to most as caviar. In Japanese, the phonetics of the French word “caviar” are approximated using katakana (キャビア; kyabia). Although the trailing ‘r’ of “caviar” is phonetically present with the hard ‘a’ sound in Japanese, it is not visually seen when the word is romanized. To create this name pun, the ‘r’ was playfully reintroduced into the characters name (キャビラ; kyabira), although still not as a trailing consonant. Cavira’s single horn is most likely a homage to the large tail fin of the Sturgeon fish he is named after.
Tobi (トービ): Like Cavira, Chilled’s other henchmen Tobi also has a fish roe name pun. His name is based on the Japanese word tobiko (とびこ), which is used to describe Flying Fish roe. This type of roe is most widely known for its use in creating certain types of sushi. It is most likely because of his Flying Fish name pun that Tobi features two fin-like horns on his head resembling the Flying Fish’s larger pectoral fins.

Ipana (イパナ): Gets his name from the pineapple plant (パイナップル; painappuru).
Berry (ベリー): Berry’s name quite obviously comes from berry plants. Being from Planet Plant, they have name puns based on plants.

Battle of Gods

Beerus (ビルス): Based on the German pronunciation of the word “virus” (bīrusu).
Whis (ウイス): His pun comes from Whiskey, (ウイスキー uisukī in Japanese). Akira Toriyama mistook “Beerus” as being derived from “beer”, and responded in kind when naming the character’s attendant.

Video Games

Mystery of Shen Long

Kurilien (クリリアン): Basically an alien Kuririn, so kuri (chestnut) + eirian (alien).

Konpei Tower (コンペイ塔): The pun here is that in Japanese it's read Konpei-tou, an homophone for konpeitou, the sugar candy.

Daimaō Fukkatsu

Ukulele: From the instrument of the same name.
Banjo: Same as above.
Organ: Same as above.

Planet Synthesizer (シンセサイザー星): From the electronic musical instrument of the same name.

Lord Konpei (コンペイ様): From Konpeitou a sugar candy.
Land of Konpei (秘境コンペイ): Same as above.

Legend of the Super Saiyan

Maima (マイーマ): Maima comes from maimai, one of the Japanese words for snail.
Tsumuri (ツムリー): Tsumuri has the same origin as Kataz; Katatsumuri, which also means snail.

Plan to Exterminate the Saiyans

God Guardon (ゴッドガードン): A combination of English word “god” as it is written in Japanese plus the English word “guard” as it is written in Japanese (ガード; gādo) with an “n” sound appended.

Kinkarn: From kinkan, meaning kumquat.
Arbee: From biwa (biwa -> bia -> abi -> Arbee), meaning loquat.
Gure: From “grape”.
Ponkarn: From ponkan.
Rozack: From zakuro, meaning pomegranate.
Skud: From muscat (masukatto -> Sukaddo -> Skud).
Bontarn: From bontan, meaning “pomelo”.
Jiku: From ichijiku, Japanese for the common fig.
Buhdo: From budou, meaning “grape”.
Kawarz: From kawazu, “frog”.

Planet Kuhn: One of the planets from Plan to Exterminate the Saiyans. The inhabitants resemble dogs, which is where they get their name from (“kun-kun” being the onomatopoeia for a dog whimpering). They are harassed by the space pirates from Planet Ater. Because of this, the town on Planet Kuhn is named Pirates.

Planet Ater: The other planet from Plan to Exterminate the Saiyans. Most of the planet is water (hence the name), and they live underwater. The town on their planet is named Aqua, for obvious reasons.

Dragon Ball V.R.V.S.

Majin Ozotto (魔人オゾット): Possibly a pun on ozomashii or ozoi, meaning "disgusting, repulsive, absurd". Also possibly from zotto suru (making you shudder/shiver, being horrifying/disgusting).

Advanced Adventure

Maraca: Another Namekian Demon, and another musical instrument name.

Dragon Ball Online

Miira: Since he’s a time breaker, his name comes from the Japanese word for future, mirai.
Towa (東和) From towa (eternity), in keeping with the “time” theme.
Fu: Probably based on the first portion of the word future.

Paella (パエリア): Being a descendant of Pilaf, his name is taken directly from the Spanish fried rice dish.

Naraku: A demonic Namekian. In certain sects of Hinduism, Sikhism, Jainism and Buddhism, Naraka is a place of torment, or Hell.

Neko Majin Z

Neko Majin Z (ネコ マジンZ): Not really a pun but, Neko means cat and Majin means demon person, so it would be Demon Cat Person. The Z portion comes from Dragon Ball Z.
Onio (オニオ): Obviously from onion.
Kuriza (クリーザ): From his father's name, Freeza (Furīza), and Kuri, "chestnut", because his got a chestnut shaped head.

New Gadget Super Lovers

Oniyu (オニュー): A pun on the expression "Oh! New" from the title. He is Ginyu's equivalent.
Niyusu (ニュース): A pun on "News". She is Jheeze's equivalent.
Sukuop (スクープ): A pun on "Scoop", as in news scoop. He is Recoome's equivalent.
Deita (データ): A pun on "Data". He is Buta's equivalent.
Kuruzo (クルゾ): A pun on kuru zo ("coming!" as in, "coming soon" or "coming up")". He is Gurd's equivalent.

Dragon Ball Minus

Jaco Tilimentempibosshi(ジャコ): Named for chirimen jako, small, crinkly dried fish sprinkled over rice. Also probably influenced by zako, an unimportant small-fry, or a minor enemy in video games.
Ōmori Tokunoshin (大盛): Most probably from tokumori (an extra-large serving of rice).
Tights: Blooma’s sister, like the rest of her family, her name is an allusion to an undergarment.
Katayude Tamagorō: Meaning "hard-boiled egg" (plus a masculine name-ending).
Azuki An: "Azuki" from the type of bean itself and "an" on the sweet paste made from it.

Ghiné (ギネ): Like other Saiyans, her name is based on a vegetable; in this case spring onion (negi).

Lapis (ラピス): #17's original name, from the deep blue semi-precious stone lapis lazuli.
Lazuli (ラズリ): #18's original name, same explanation as above.

Miguel: Named after the biblical Archangel Michael (מִיכָאֵל in Hebrew, meaning "Who is like God?"; in contrast to her husband Mister Satan's demonic name themes (his real name being Mark, coming from Maaku, a re-arrangement of akuma, meaning devil). Probably also a nod at their daughters name Videl, keeping the same extension.

Ranran Roshi (ランラン老師): No clue. Named in Super Gokuden Totsugeki-Hen.

So he’s just the “Demon King” or at least the “Youma King”. He’s not actually a guy named “Youma”, anymore than Gyumao is a guy named "King Gyuma".

Jaco (ジャコ): Possibly an original name without a pun.

It’s probably a pun on zako, an unimportant small-fry (or a minor enemy in video games).

This was one of the things we changed when I posted the DBO timeline up for everyone. While Naraku is based of the word Naraka, the Korean for his name is not Naraka directly, it's Naraku.

Fu/Future makes sense, but the wind connection seems pretty unlikely to me. It's not written with the character for 'wind' in Chinese (instead it's 夫), and there's no real connection there. It'd be helpful to know how the name's written in Korean though.

Just to be clear, シンセサイザー星人 means “Alien from the Planet Synthesizer”, rather than simply “Synthesizer”. I guess you could try to adapt that into “Sythesizeraian” or something like that.

To be honest, I took the Katakana(?) from Dragon Ball Wikia, since it was the only source available... I don't know their validity at all. Was he originally called "Alien from Planet Synthesizer" or just "Synthesizer"?

I'll add more Katakana as I find it or people add it here. Anything else I should add? Did I forget anyone? I tried to add all the significant and distinct video game characters that hail from Japan, at least the ones that aren't palette swaps.

Edit: Added Neko Majin Z and New Gadget Super Lovers related characters. Please tell me if there's a better/more accurate way to romanize their names.
Also, there is this character on the final chapter. I hope his name is there, somewhere, or maybe on this page.

I'm not sure about the first. My gut instinct is perhaps it has something to do with the English word cockerel, but I have nothing to support this hypothesis.

As for the second, I always suspected a play on tokage ("lizard") for the same reason.

Just a note: "alien" is eirian (エイリアン in Japanese). "Kuririn" + "Alien" does seem to be the source of the name, though.

Planet Kuhn: One of the planets from Plan to Exterminate the Saiyans. The inhabitants resemble dogs, which is where they get their name from (“ku~n” being the cry of a dog). They are harassed by the space pirates from Planet Ater. Because of this, the town on Planet Kuhn is named Pirates.

"Kun-kun" is specifically the sound made by dogs sniffing around for things (foxes, truffles, other dogs' butts), or whimpering. Judging by the context, I suppose it's probably the latter.

Dragon Ball V.R.V.S.

I remember this thingy! I never bothered to talk about it because it was transparently shilling for other stuff. I'm borderline-confident that the artist ("Shiko Tamanori", taken from a line in "CHA-LA HEAD-CHA-LA") was Naho Ooishi.

I have no complaints about the names here except for the last one, which I'm fairly certain is just kuru zo ("coming!" as in, "coming soon" or "coming up")

JACO THE GALACTIC PATROLMAN

Jaco (ジャコ): Probably a pun on zako, an unimportant small-fry, or a minor enemy in video games.
Omori (大盛): His name literally means "a large serving" (of food).
Tights: Blooma’s sister, like the rest of her family, her name is an allusion to an undergarment.
Katayude: His name is a pun on the word "hard-boiled" in Japanese.
Azuki An: A pun on Azuki bean paste.

As we've detailed on the main site, Jaco (full name Jaco Tilimentempibosshi) is named for chirimen jako, small, crinkly dried fish sprinkled over rice. The relationship with the term zako (which is written with the same kanji as jako) is clearly intended, though.


Omori's full name is Ōmori Tokunoshin, suggestive of tokumori (an extra-large serving of rice).

Chief Inspector Katayude is Katayude Tamagorō, which gives us "hard-boiled egg" (plus a masculine name-ending).

As we've also detailed on the site, Azuki An is a pun twice over: "azuki" on the bean itself and "an" on the sweet paste made from it.

Most of these are simply palette swaps...
Lonme, Kuranbo and Napple are this guy. Napple being the one that most closely resembles him.
Neiburu, Monley and Gupera are palette swaps of Raspberry.
Nabana and Rawberry are palette swaps of Appule.
Gonmah and Payah are palette swaps of Kyui.
Karbosu is a palette swap of Dodoria.
Yuhzu is a palette swap of Zarbon.

I'm not sure if I should include palette swaps, if I do, there are a lot of them in the Famicom games...

Just to be clear, シンセサイザー星人 means “Alien from the Planet Synthesizer”, rather than simply “Synthesizer”. I guess you could try to adapt that into “Sythesizeraian” or something like that.

To be honest, I took the Katakana(?) from Dragon Ball Wikia, since it was the only source available... I don't know their validity at all. Was he originally called "Alien from Planet Synthesizer" or just "Synthesizer"?

Haven't played the game myself, but the Japanese Wikipedia page for the game calls the character シンセサイザー星人/“Alien from Planet Synthesizer”

Rakkaru (ラッカル): No clue.
I'm not sure about the first. My gut instinct is perhaps it has something to do with the English word cockerel, but I have nothing to support this hypothesis.

Maybe it's from Karura? Kind of fits the mythic creature theme with Yama-uba/Manba.

Is Comet Kumori a pun on anything? Can someone confirm the pun on Konpei?
Any clue if this new kid is named in these pages or not?

Also, there is this character on the final chapter. I hope his name is there, somewhere, or maybe on this page.

Besides the land of Konpei itself, Mystery of Shenlong features a "Konpei Tower"; 塔/tou="tower", so the joke is that コンペイ塔/Konpei-tou="Konpei Tower" is a homophone for 金平糖/konpeitou, the candy name. It's the same way Karin-tou/"Karin Tower" is a pun on karintou the snack food. The tou in the snack names is written with 糖, "sugar".

The comet's called "Gumori". I've heard this comes from some evil king mentioned in the prophecies of Nostradamus, if you can believe that. Niko Niko Pedia claims it's from moguri/"dive down, hide", which...doesn't strike me as making much sense either.
Edit: Oops...got the Nostradamus thing mixed up with the henchmen, and I see you've already covered it. So yeah, I've got no clue other than the moguri thing.

The Oob knock-off...looks like he's named "Oob", actually. He calls himself 初 (first, begin), but the furigana above it seems to read u-bu. It's a little hard to make out clearly, though. The captain calls him that again on the second page, but it's in quotation marks for some reason, like maybe it's not really his name.

Dur, I should have known this, I researched Konpeito a few days ago. Also comes from my mother tongue so yay, fun <3

Yeah that seems a bit of a stretch, but I'm not sure. Depending on the cultural use of those words, could it be because the whole comet deal was a hidden plot by Paragus? And it did "dive down" onto the planet. Again, it would depend on context, you'd know more about it than I do, you tell me.

Confusing and disappointing, so he literally is a white Oob. But he also may be simply called "first".
