There's plenty of (IMO justified) hate for the Funi dub, but for those of us old enough to remember, some of the fan subs missed the mark just as much, and mischaracterized just as bad as Funi does (often to more hilarious if slightly less cringe-worthy effect - I.e. The polite and composed Freeza sweating like a sailor while calmly speaking).

I had a fansub of DBZ Movie 12 where they didn't really translate so much as add cursing; so we got scenes with Paikuhan screaming at Enma's palace like he has (cartoon) Tourette's.

Its been a decade or two since I've seen Bio-Broly, but didn't Goten or Trunks at one point tell Broly to "Come kiss my ass"? I only saw the movie once at a young age, but I wasn't sure if the translation was right or not.

But... the barrier Janemba had set up was explicitly stated to be weak to insults. If anything that's one of the few cases where spamming curses would be semi-reasonable. So anyway, I heard there was one sub of Super episode 2 that was done by someone who was technically competent in Japanese, but was just being over-liberal to the point that the whole thing resembled a 98 FUNi script. Apparently they had Whis randomly reference Game of Thrones at one point; "This dinosaur meat is famous throughout the seven kingdoms... I mean the seventh universe."

The first time I ever saw DBZ in Japanese was a clip I downloaded online, and it was when Freeza was cut in half and taking a final shot at Goku..
I vividly remember the subtitles for Frieza; "nothing but a fucking monkey!" as he shoots his energy blast at him. For a long time I thought DBZ Japanese was full of swearing and targeted to adults.

The good ol' days.... I actually still have some of those old tapes, brought back memories when I found them the other day (well actually I knew where they were but haven't touched them in years). I had that movie 12 and I think I had a tape with the hank message (episode where Vegeta becomes Majin Vegeta).
