A Question about Toriyama-Sensei
This question may stir up suspiscion.
1.Viz is pretty much turining Dragon Ball's manga in to the next Pokemon.
2.Funimation is getting creative with their releases, but annoying with only dubbing half of the lines in the Dragonball games.
3.DragonBall's live action movie is turining DB into a Star Wars meets Never Ending Story-esque movie franchise.
Out of all this craziness, what does Mr.Toriyama have to say about this? Does anyone know if he's alright with America's "creative" use of Dragonball?

Yeah, I doubt he really cares.
As far as I know, he doesn't speak or read/write much or any English, so whatever FUNimation or Viz do doesn't really affect him. As for the movie, he might get invited to Japan's premiere or something, and if he attends (or whenever he sees the movie otherwise), he'll probably just go, "oh that's nice, good job."

Seriously, why does everyone assume Mr. Toriyama cares one whit? He invented Dragonball to make money. That is its sole purpose for existing. So, as long as it's making money, why should he care?

He did? Just for money? It would sound way cooler, if he was more happier about Dragonball and making a Myspace. I don't understand him.
I will just complete my collection, all Remastered DVD and the manga. Daizenshuu and stuff will be extra, those are not essential. Neither is meeting
or talking with Toriyama.

Re: A Question about Toriyama-Sensei
America develops only a fraction of the worlds Dragonball material. Even though we produce more than any other individual country (from what I've heard) the Asian continent as a whole produces several different dubs under many different brands and companies. I personally believe that if Toryama was really worried about any other country's Dragonball other than Japans it would be in Asia where there are more Dragonball fans than anywhere else.Pain wrote:Out of all this craziness, what does Mr.Toriyama have to say about this? There actually is something where Toriyama talked about the prospect of a live-action DragonBall movie. It's on pp.154-155 of the kanzenban guidebook DragonBall Forever. It's part of a longer sort of essay by Toriyama on himself and DragonBall. This book was published in 2004, so quite a ways before the live-action DragonBall movie became confirmed. I noticed this excerpt a few months ago and have been meaning to translate and post it up every since, so I guess I'll do it now.
Happy but Embarrassed
The DragonBall Re-Boom
Even now there are many fans, and various books and games are being made...I guess financially I'm pretty happy (laughs). There's even talk that it'll be made into a movie. Ye~ah...if I'm happy then I'm happy, but I don't really like to see my own work so much. Unless it's really astounding, I won't feel like meddling with the script or content...I don't have any particular requests concerning the cast. I like movies, but my own work is no good for them, and most of all I'm embarrassed. I think that every now and then, but then I think “Man, that's pretty cold-hearted for the author to think that”. Even during serialization I think I had those cold-hearted feelings, the sense that I was drawing because it was my job. When the games have been made as well, I haven't really touched them.
Kanzenshuu: Is that place still around?
Sometimes, I tweet things
We might, if they screamed all the time, for no good reason.

Toriyama is the man!
Yeah, that was kinda-sorta his job, to draw comics in exchange for cash.shotkeeper wrote:He did? Just for money?
A decade of cranking out a manga chapter every week probably soured him on the whole thing. It would sound way cooler, if he was more happier about Dragonball and making a Myspace. I don't understand him.
And where'd the myspace reference come from?

Lord you really think it was solely for money. Jesus if all an artist cared about was money. Then they would have gotten real jobs. You don't do a series that has been as popular and enduring as Dragonball and only care about money.Yeah, that was kinda-sorta his job, to draw comics in exchange for cash.

While cash may not be why he started it, it probably is why he continued it.Victator Supreme wrote:Lord you really think it was solely for money. Jesus if all an artist cared about was money. Toriyama loves one shots and I believe Dragonball was originally supposed to be very short but kept being bumped up until the final product was 42 (about) issues. By that time he was extreamly sick of his creation and wished it to be done and over with.
Aro started to laugh. “Ha, ha, ha,” he chuckled.- Actual quote from Twilight

Actually, cash IS why he started it. He needed money badly so he decided to give "Dragon Boy" a try.NeptuneKai wrote:While cash may not be why he started it, it probably is why he continued it.Victator Supreme wrote:Lord you really think it was solely for money. Yes he was, though it obviously didn't earn him as much money as he wanted/needed. Interestingly enough, even though the original Dr. slump anime series ended in 1986 it is currently being re-released in Japan, just like Dragonball is being here.Victator Supreme wrote:Wait wasnt he coming off super successful Dr.Slump?
Also, I think it is amazing that even though Dragonball was made with the purpose of making money, Toryama was still able to produce such a phenomenal product. Hats off to you Akira Toryama!

Toriyama started making manga because he had no money. He said that he entered a manga contest because he was stealing money out of his mom's purse for cigarettes at 20. If he would have won, he probably never would have made manga for a living, because he just wanted immediate money.
Source is either the American Shonen Jump issue 01 or 03.

This is true. This comes from an interview in Shonen Jump #3.Chibi Mystic Gohan wrote:Toriyama started making manga because he had no money. The series doesn't start with the arrival of Raditz. Stop being lazy and watch Dragonball.
