Have you ever tried to make sense out of the dub?

True that. FUNimation was weird back in the day, but damn I loved that Ocean dub. I have a feeling that the only real reason I even like the dub is because I have a nostalgia for it, but whatever the case may be, I like it. I love the Japanese version because I had those Japanese games for PS1 and I used to get terrible quality clips from the internet back in the day, but just the memory of hurrying home from school just so I can tape the show with all the Toonami intros and promos and all that...ahh good times.

It gets kind of fuzzy trying to remember what I was confused about ten years ago, what was in the dub, what I read on PN and the manga and fics... There are probably a number of important things I don't even realize I have wrong and probably won't until that glorious Dragonbox comes in to answer all of my questions finally.
I watched the series in dub after that, and while the visuals became rawer the script was still as artificially engineered as always. People were allowed to die and bleed now but that's a far cry from an accurate translation.
Oh, and Vegeta's daughter would like to have a word with you on that last line. FUNi usually is pretty good with the names but saying the word bra is not the same thing as "I guess you're the world's true savior Satan!"
TheGreatness25 wrote: After the Ocean dub passed, none of these problems existed again. From then on, the only issues were dialog and name changes. Although no names were truly THAT altered except the H word, which was not an issue on the DVDs.

TheGreatness25, don't be naive. There were tons of alterations to dialogue after Funimation's in-house studio started doing the dub. All the ones I mentioned earlier, for instance.
Just because Funimation allowed "die" and "death" and had people bleeding, doesn't mean the dub got any better. It was still atrocious, only now even less talented dub actors did the voices. And even the re-dub of the earlier seasons wasn't much better.
Somebody needs a visit to DBZ Uncensored.

lol It is. I don't know why they can show blood and gore and women (in the series) in their underwear, or in baths, but they couldn't name the character "Bra". And they didn't even fix that error in the DVDs OR in the "remastering" that they did. Boooo. But then again, her name is mentioned what, 4 times?
'Bulla' IS a technically accurate romanization, though.

What makes you think people on "Rygal7" couldn't do something similar to the kaioken? It's just a powerup.Chrono Trigger wrote:This is mostly for people that didn't know the show was censored/cut up/stuff like that. Like I remember being a kid and imagining Vegeta fighting some random guys on "Rygal 7" who were doing attacks similar to the Kaio Ken...Or wondering how all those people could have possibly escaped from that city Nappa blew up...and what really got me was how these guys were fighting these brutal battles but there was never any blood. A lot of times the stuff didn't make any sense at all. Of course all my questions were answered when I came across the site "DBZ Uncensored" but yeah...You guys get what I mean right?

I did think they could do the power up. When I was a kid and I was watching the show for the first time as it came on tv, I didn't know about the japanese version, edits, and script changes made to the show. So I believed just about everything that was said in the dub. So when Vegeta talked about running into some radical weaponry on "Rygal 7" and mentioned that he encountered something like the Kaio-Ken before I just assumed that the 2 were related and imagined him fighting some dudes on a random planet...doing an attack similar to the kaio-ken. Back then a lot of stuff didn't make sense to me about the show. Like how according to them Vegeta was the one who killed Grandpa Gohan...mystic trunks wrote:What makes you think people on "Rygal7" couldn't do something similar to the kaioken? It's just a powerup.
I completely respect your opinion, and I respect you. I enjoyed discussing this with you, even if I don't completely agree.

I'm vaguely disappointed Funi didn't change the name of Planet M2 in GT to Rygal 7 to connect it to that "radical weapony on Rygal 7" line. And it'd be amusing if Barduck were referred to as "Professor Barduck" all throughout the Barduck special.

Bardock is really a cargo robot with a parachute.

Yeah, that would definitely help their already low credibility.Herms wrote:I'm vaguely disappointed Funi didn't change the name of Planet M2 in GT to Rygal 7 to connect it to that "radical weapony on Rygal 7" line. You know...With all of my memories of the Ocean dub on Toonami, and the awkward censoring, it was done in such a way my very young self could still tell what what happening while still making it TV friendly. When someone "Got sent to the next dimension", I knew people died, and I still felt bad for the people in the blown-up city despite it being Sunday.
I have to admit the arm-regeneration always confused me, but at least I had a "That can't be right, this has to be a taunt" idea of it.

I think I'll be buying assorted Dragon Ball things for the rest of my life.

lol I love that line about feeling bad for people in the city even though it was a Sunday lol
Speaking of arm regeneration, there was a line LATER in the series (well depends what you'd call later) after FUNimation began dubbing the rest of the series where Nail is fighting Frieza and Nail regenerates his arm and Frieza says, "I should make a copy of that power. It might come in handy." har-har-har, oh how witty. NEVER understood that.

Well...the shadow realm exists. The dub just uses it for EVERY instance of someone vanishing.Metalwario64 wrote:DA SHADOOOW REALM!!!russ869 wrote:I used to try to make sense of the Yuugiou dub. Believe me, that's even harder.

Kind of like "Another Dimension" it exists (Y'know the other realm) but it's used as a death censor.
