It totally looks like the rocky homes that the Saiyans lived in - as seen in the flashback episode of them fighting the Tsuffuls on (then) Planet Plant. Maybe Mr. Toriyama got the idea from this?

That's kind of cool, but I would have to think that when *whoever* designed the buildings that they were made either to look cool or picked from a bunch of designs. Of course, I'm talking about the guys who drew them as well as Toriyama, not the Saiyans.

Yeah, Toriyama drew some sketches of those rocky houses, the primitive Saiyans, and the Tsufuru in a memo he made for the anime staff. The memo also contains a summary of the whole Saiyan/Tsufuru history seen in that episode of Z, so it seems that was all stuff he thought up. This memo can be seen in anime guidebooks like Daizenshuu 5 and DBZ Son Goku Densetsu.
