Toei making FUNimation add the "Z" to Dragon Ball Kai was a pretty smart move. Since the majority of their audience doesn't understand that "Kai" was a "refreshed" version of Z (falling on its 20th anniversary), adding the Z moniker communicated the concept of Kai much better than any of FUNimation's advertising.dbboxkaifan wrote:If perhaps they didn't add the Z to Dragon Ball Kai it wouldn't confuse them.

Personally, I always thought it was more a "just in case we ever decide to do it with the original Dragon Ball, put a Z there" kinda thought process. In that scenario they'd be kinda screwed on the Japanese side, as far as marketing it.AgitoZ wrote:Toei making FUNimation add the "Z" to Dragon Ball Kai was a pretty smart move. Re: Dragon Ball Z "Seasons" On Blu-ray: News & Discussion
Okay, I know this is slightly off topic, but looks like Toei somehow surpassed FUNimation in terms of terrible video quality for a "remaster", with this Blu-ray release of Galaxy Express 999, even if they kept the original aspect ratio.
All courtesy of Q-Tec.
I'm hoping Toei does not do this for the Dragon Ball Franchise, if and whenever they decide to do Blu-rays.

Here are DVD screenshots so even though the Blu-ray version doesn't look very good it's still an improvement overall.
Perhaps it's really that the source footage isn't something that can be remastered to look good.

It works if I click "copy image URL" and paste it into a new tab, but not here on the forum. Not sure why.ChibiGoku wrote: Huh, is it not showing up? It is for me. I can re-host it if I have to.

Just right click on the mouse then press "View Image" it'll show up.
Back on topic, the brightness on the Season BDs wasn't fixed but it's tweakable just as it was on the DVDs, from being bad to somewhat decent.
Despite FUNimation releasing DBZ with the wrong aspect ratio if they had balanced the picture quality on the DVDs it would've been a perfectly serviceable release. I don't get how the Orange Bricks exactly as released get perfect 5/5 scores when the quality's obviously mediocre.

If we could even get the tweaked version on DVD in 4:3 I'd be happy!

No amount of tweaking will restore the detail lost here.dbboxkaifan wrote:Just right click on the mouse then press "View Image" it'll show up.

I was pleasantly surprised by the overall color quality of Season 2. It's no Dragon Box or Level Set, but for a standard mass-marketed release it was actually not half bad. Or maybe the bar was just set so super low with Orange Brick Vol. 2 that I'm willing to accept just about anything that isn't complete garbage.

I agree with you. If this is the only release I have to watch the American version with the dub score then I'd be pleased.

Those tweaked shots look really terrible. Why do you keep talking about the technical side of things that you are not familiar with at all?dbboxkaifan wrote:Back on topic, the brightness on the Season BDs wasn't fixed but it's tweakable just as it was on the DVDs, from being bad to somewhat decent.

I'm glad someone else said it... cause I've said it plenty... and wow do those screencaps look terrible.

Yup. Unfortunately, so much of this thread is filled with pseudo-techno babble.MarcFBR wrote:'hugs kei'kei17 wrote:Those tweaked shots look really terrible. Why do you keep talking about technical side of things that you are not familiar with at all?

These Season BDs are serviceable and considering it's either the Orange Brick DVDs or Season Blu-rays, you don't really have much choice for an English release.
If I didn't own the Dragon Box Z collection I'd buy every single Season Blu-ray as they do the job, even though it wouldn't feel consistent 'cause I usually only stick to releases that have Japanese credits on them.

The Dragonboxes are like a middle aged woman who still looks good through simply taking good care of her skin and body with maybe a tiny bit of makeup while the Orange Bricks are like a middle aged woman who get's 50 tons of botox, makeup and plastic surgery in order to look younger and as a result looks even worse. ~ ringworm128

I have been eagerly awaiting that cover to come out on amazon/rightstuf but nothing as of yet! I believe that when we get season 4 cover, we will get 5 and 6 as well. Then 7,8,9 obviously as the covers are to be connected.samuraix123 wrote:Haha I definitely gotta agree with you bud.Kendamu wrote:I was pleasantly surprised by the overall color quality of Season 2. Does anyone know when we'll see the new cover for part 4?
