I object to the use of "tuxedo" as a catch-all to refer to anything from a regular suit up through various permutations of party clothes. Goku is wearing a suit with a fedora when he goes to the 21st Budokai, not a tuxedo. Vegeta's and Yamcha's "tuxedos" are also regular suits.

Also, the "Eastern Tradition" looks are costumes from Journey to the West. Goku is Son Wukong (his namesake), Gohan is Zhu Bajie / Cho Hakkai / "Pigsy", Piccolo is Sha Wujing / Sha Gojo / "Sandy", and Kuririn is Sanzang / Sanzo / Tripitaka.

I think Yamcha might be the male with the second most "bonus" costumes. I don't know where you draw the line but the Battle of Gods costumes and even the initial GT costumes were done by Toriyama. There are also the Cross Epoch costumes. Vegeta's pirate emperor look is something I've always wanted to see in games.

Also here is one Goku costume I think you missed. That flickr account has a lot of image scans.

Anything shown to be directly drawn by Toriyama will do. So yeah, that includes even the designs for Battle of Gods and GT, as well as Cross Epoch.
Since I don't have all scans needed, I might add some of those later to the various characters, so your links are definately helpful.

For now, I can ensure that characters have most of the costumes, since I have access to all manga chapters, all title pages, all illustrations from the first Daizenshuu, all covers from the Kanzenban and a few pictures from the more recent Chogashuu.
So I can safely say that even with just what I have, all characters will have 95% of their costumes shown, and I do intend to complete the 5% remaining in time!

Isn't this Goten, not Gokuu?

I hesitated as well on this, but I thought "why would it be Goten to celebrate anything, instead of the usual Goku?" especially since the page also shows kid Goku and a SD version of Goku. And then, the description of this picture in Daizenshuu 1 says "Son Goku celebrates his 400th appearance".

But I agree that it's not easy to make the difference.

Technically, I think Piccolo has 5 costumes? It might just be an art style issue over time, but Piccolo "Junior" has a rounded neck collar on his dogi and then later on gains the v-neck you have posted after he stops being an evil jerk. lol

It's totally possible, I'll check it out. A different neck collar would definately count as another costume, so I'll add it if that's the case.

About the tuxedos, I tried to find a same word to describe those kinds of "good-looking suits for important events", but it looks like I was wrong, from what you say I take it that tuxedo is a specific type of suit as opposed to any "wedding-ready" suit.
From what you say, I guess I can simply rename those with just the word "suit" to cover it.

And about "Eastern Tradition", I thought it was from Journey to the West, but I was not sure, so I deliberately stayed vague to avoid saying lies.
Now that I know that it is indeed confirmed as being inspired by Journey to the West, I can rename them properly.

Yamcha's nine bonus costumes have been added, and he doesn't have as many costumes as I thought since he doesn't appear that much in Toriyama's artworks, especially as the story goes by. And when he does, he often has his regular costume of the moment.

VARIOUS CORRECTIONS:

- Son Goku has a new Bonus Costume that Makaioshin showed me ("Rainbow Guy", added at the end of the section).

- Piccolo now has a fifth Story Costume as TheDevilsCorpse pointed at a noticeable evolution in his battle costume as the story goes on, which is therefore divided into two variations now.

- The Monkey King pointed at a mistake I made, confusing the 22nd Tenkaichi Budokai for the 23rd Tenkaichi Budokai on Yamcha's descriptions.

- Still about Yamcha, and because of that mix-up with numbers, I had unwillingly skipped the 23rd Tenkaichi Budokai: Yamcha's two looks for that tournament have now been added in-between the other story costumes to fill the gap. The text about his scars has been moved accordingly.

STORY COSTUMES (15)

6 - BROKEN LEG, HOME - After Ten Shin Han has broken his leg during the 22nd Tenkaichi Budokai, Yamcha has no choice but to stay home and rest, even as the dramatic events related to Demon King Piccolo are going on. Staying at Kame House, he wears very comfortable clothes so that he can rest properly, and wanders around barefeet.
7 - BROKEN LEG, OUTSIDE - Still recovering from his broken leg, Yamcha is shown to wear a simple and comfortable costume, yet more presentable to receive guests. His clothes getting back from "comfort-only" to more standard costumes might be a sign of his progressing recovery.

7 - SUMMER BEACH - With shorts and a sleeveless T-shirt, this costume is ideal to withstand hot temperatures and play on the beach with friends! (in this picture, Toriyama seems to have revised several times the length of the T-shirt on the arm, which explains the uncolored part.)

If you are talking about that white part on his right shoulder(left in the pic from our point of view), tha's just the top of the watermelon Krillin's wearing.

KAIO SHIN

STORY COSTUME

COMPROMISE - Kaio Shin's definitive manga colors are a compromise between Toriyama's original vision and his revision of the character's look. The clothes are heavily based on Toriyama's original depiction (which also served as the basis for the anime version), despite minor differences. The skin is taken from Toriyama's more recent and repeated depictions of Kaio Shin as having a red skin (he would however give him a purple skin in Battle of Gods since he tried to stick to the anime colors, even for Piccolo's arm "muscles" or Bulma's hair... which ironically led him to create non-anime colors at times - see Trunks).

BONUS COSTUMES (2)

Spoiler:

1 - ORIGINAL VISION - Toriyama's vision of Kaio Shin during the original run for the manga (one artwork and one colored chapter), which would pretty much be used for the anime as well.
2 - PERFECT REVISION - For the Perfect Edition (Kanzenban), Toriyama totally revised Kaio Shin's colors, reconfirming those a few volumes later in yet another artwork. With a red skin, Kaio Shin also comes with a very stylish new set of colors for his costume. This costume is shown to be the same than for Kibito and Gohan, but not the same than the Elder Kaio Shin's. This could be a sign that the costume's color scheme does not depend on one's status, but has simply been changed over time.

KRILIN

STORY COSTUMES (15)

1 - RAINY DAYS - When showing up at the 23rd Tenkaichi Budokai, Krilin had everything it took to protect himself from the pouring rain while still retaining colors that feel classic on him. The word "Kame" appears on his cap as sort of a replacement for the missing classic insignia, and his name is written as "Kuririn" on his coat this time.
2 - KAME SEN DOGI - The usual Kame Sen Dogi he is often seen wearing. Unlike Goku most of the time, Krilin doesn't wear an undershirt and doesn't have boots. When feeling comfortable, such as at Kame House, Krilin sometimes takes off the shoes and wanders around just wearing socks.
3 - KAME SEN DOGI (Extra weight) - To train, Krilin will sometimes wear the same heavy accessories than Goku, which is an idea of God. With that blue undershirt, it all looks much more similar to Goku's usual clothes.
4 - HOSPITAL - Although he is not as badly damaged as Goku after the battle against Vegeta, Krilin is still forced to spend days at the hospital, wearing the appropriate clothes for that.

5 - JOURNEY THROUGH SPACE - To reach Namek, there is pretty much a whole month to spend in the depths of space inside the Namek ship, so you have to get comfortable. Krilin is seen wearing those clothes once during that journey. It is unknown how long exactly he kept them.
6 - KAME SEN DOGI (Tourist) - Quite relaxed in what should be a pretty calm quest for the Dragon Balls, Krilin spends his first moments on Namek wearing this. This is the classic dogi with extra weights to train, but the shoes seem like sneakers-styled boots and he wears a casual cap with his name spelled as "Kulilin" this time. When it becomes clear that there is a threat on this planet and it's time to spy on the enemy to learn more, Krilin ditches the extra weight and casual cap and boots to get back to his serious dogi.
7 - SAIYAN ARMOR - Having Freezer's spaceship to themselves, the guys are given new clothes by Vegeta while Goku is recovering in the Medical Machine. Although he prefers Vegeta's armor for not having shoulder pads, Krilin and Gohan soon find out that the armor is totally flexible from the inside. Although Gohan's armor is pretty similar to what we've seen on Vegeta, Krilin's armor and suit look quite different, giving the Earthling his own style.
8 - WAITING FOR GOKU - While nobody knew when Goku would come back to Earth after his battle with Freezer, there was nothing much to do than get back to a normal life and wait for him. When that everyday life is interrupted by the approaching Freezer, Krilin is seen wearing those casual clothes, with a blue shirt.
9 - KAME SEN DOGI (Cell saga) - After three years training for the arrival of the cyborgs, Krilin has replaced his usual shoes fit for martial arts with boots, similarly to Goku. Much like his best friend, he also keeps a blue undershirt now.

10 - MODERN CITY BOY - To say goodbye to Trunks at Capsule Corp. after Cell has been destroyed, Krilin is seen wearing the most modern urban clothes we've seen him wearing yet.
11 - BEACH LIFE - Seven years after the battle against Cell, Krilin now has a wife and a daughter. Having other priorities than martial arts traditions, he has stopped shaving his hair. We first see him like this on the beach of Kame House. It is not clearly stated in the manga if the family lives here or if they were just paying a visit (it could be that Gohan went to tell Kame Sennin and unexpectedly found Krilin there). While having his trademark orange, those clothes are a perfect fit to spend time on a beach!
12 - 25th TENKAICHI BUDOKAI - To go to the popular Tenkaichi Budokai, Krilin is seen wearing this city costume. He has brought his actual new battle costume in his bag and will change only once he's inside the building.
13 - PERSONAL BATTLE COSTUME - Krilin has ditched the Kame Sen dogi and now wears clothes of his own style when it's time to fight. To train for the Tenkaichi Budokai and for the competition itself, he has chosen this costume. Due to the following event, he wears those clothes during the whole Boo arc.
14 - BIRTHDAY PARTY - Years after the battle against Majin Boo, Krilin has changed his haircut, perhaps to look more modern and youthful despite his growing age. For Bulma's giant birthday party during Battle of Gods, he has chosen to wear very traditionnal clothes, which contrast with his modern haircut.
15 - EPILOGUE - Ten years after the battle against Majin Boo, Krilin has completely retired from martial arts, not even participating in friendly competitions such as the Tenkaichi Budokai. The evolution of his clothes show his growing age. He has also let his hair go back to their natural shape from the Boo arc.

BONUS COSTUMES (10)

1 - CELEBRATION - Cheerful colors for this costume, an ideal choice to celebrate any joyful occasion!
2 - CITY BOY - Casual clothes to relax and have a good time with friends, wandering around the city.
3 - DRIVER - A good costume to take friends on the ride in a stylish car. The reversed cap is a classic when you want to show off in such vehicles, although it might have become a bit old-fashioned nowadays.
4 - FISHERMAN - Ideal clothes to go around fishing with friends in rivers and swamps.

5 - JOURNEY TO THE WEST - A special costume that's a reference to Journey to the West, the initial inspiration for Dragon Ball.
6 - NAMEK TOURIST - A costume Krilin could have worn on Namek if there hadn't been any enemies to fight and if he had been in the presence of peaceful Nameks only. In the actual storyline, he only briefly wore the cap.
7 - POKER PLAYER - If you want to gamble with your friends around a poker table, you might as well get in the proper retro suit to fit the ambiance!
8 - RACING - The suit you want to wear if you participate in professional car races, keeping the arms and legs fresh with shorts and short sleeves.
9 - SANTA CLAUS - What better way to get into the Christmas mood than dressing as Santa Claus?
10 - SPACE SUIT - This version of Krilin is properly equiped for space exploration, which would surely please Bulma. He found a peculiar weapon, which is said to have belonged to warriors fighting for justice that were almost all killed, but are slowly rebuilding their group in a galaxy far, far away.

PICCOLO

STORY COSTUMES (5)

Spoiler:

1 - CAPE - The formal outfit Piccolo wears when there's no need for serious action. He materializes the cape and the head bands himself, making them "pop up" directly on him, with extra weight when he wants to train. He will remove them if he wants to feel comfortable and have access to maximum agility during fights.
2 - HEAD BANDS - When fighting Goku, Piccolo took the cape off, but kept the head bands, perhaps to keep his identity secret from the audience. This would not last as Goku's huge Kame Hame Ha would vaporize those head bands, and the audience would recognize him as Demon King Piccolo a few seconds later.
3 - READY TO FIGHT (Early version) - The costume Piccolo likes to wear when ready to fight seriously. He simply removes the cape and head bands.
4 - READY TO FIGHT (Final version) - A version of the costume Piccolo starts to wear during his fight against the cyborgs: the difference is in the neck collar that has become V-shaped and reveals more of the chest.
5 - WOUNDED - During his fights against Goku, the Saiyans and Freezer, Piccolo ends up being quite damaged. In all cases, he has part of his pants torn apart and his top is half destroyed, just holding onto one shoulder.

BONUS COSTUMES (3)

Spoiler:

1 - CLOSER TO GOD - A unique version of Piccolo's usual costume with a few alternative colors. The white belt along with the more golden "arm muscles" give the subtle feeling of a "deluxe" version, perhaps closer to God's white costume and his all-white sanctuary. Ideal for those who want to change Piccolo's appearance after he has fused with God.

2 - JOURNEY TO THE WEST - A costume that is more in line with Journey to the West (the original inspiration for Dragon Ball). Seeing Piccolo in an entirely different costume is something rare.

3 - THE GRINCH - Even Piccolo has to celebrate Christmas with the proper oufit! But unfortunately for him, the contrast between his red suit and his green skin won't remind children of Santa Claus...

VEGETA

STORY COSTUMES (13)

Spoiler:

1 - FULL SAIYAN ARMOR - Vegeta wears it when first trying to invade the Earth. The Saiyan armors, used by most of Freezer's troops, are very much unique and quite handy in battle: they have a strong resistance to pressure from the outside, but a huge flexibility to pressure from the inside. The result is a high level of protection while letting the user free of any move, as if he was not wearing anything (even the shoulder pads are flexible and won't prevent any movement of the user's arms). Transforming into a Giant Ape is not even enough to break the armor from the inside. This specific model is the most complete available: it includes protection for the shoulders, but also for the side thighs and the crotch (some models include the side thighs, but not the crotch protection).
2 - LIGHT SAIYAN ARMOR - A lighter model of the Saiyan armor, removing all protection below the waist, but keeping the shoulder pads. Vegeta gets it after he has been healed from his battle of Earth and right on time to head to Namek.
3 - OLD SAIYAN ARMOR - An old model still kept available in case there is a shortage of more recent models, found by Vegeta in Freezer's ship while Goku was fighting Ginyu. The structure was not meant to include pads, not even the shoulder ones. It is possible that when those models were released, scientists had not thought about the classy pads that would be as flexible as the rest. It is also possible that this old model was not flexible at all (it does not seem to change shape when Vegeta puts it), because the technology was not there yet, which would be why it doesn't include any additionnal feature that would prevent the user from moving freely.
4 - BADMAN - An Earthling outfit with regular jeans and trainers, and a pink shirt with "BADMAN" written on the back. Vegeta wears it while staying on Earth, waiting for Kakarotto, and specifically when Freezer and Cold come to Earth. It is unknown if he chose those clothes himself or was forced to do so (although the anime chose that it was Bulma who left him with only those clothes while she put his regular Saiyan suit to wash). We don't know if Vegeta even really cares about colors, perhaps he was simply attracted to those clothes by the inscription "Badman" so as to remind people not to get too comfy around him.
5 - BOXER SHORTS - Because he wears the same shoes than when dressed in "Badman", it is likely that this is just what Vegeta wears underneath his clothes, just dropping most of his costume to start training right away. He has scars over his body in this appearance, but those would later come to heal, either with time or thanks to one of the senzu he takes later.
6 - EARTH-MADE SAIYAN ARMOR - This is the kind of armor Bulma made for the whole group. Based on the old model but with "shoulder belts" as new element, it is unknown if it is as flexible as the new armor models, since no panel showing it being distorted is shown. Bulma says she based them on Vegeta's suit and armor, but Vegeta came back to Earth only with the old model, which flexibility factor is also unknown.
7 - VINTAGE CITY - Keeping dark colors and a bit of a vintage touch, this is a city outfit worn by Vegeta when everyone was saying goodbye to the Trunks from the alternative future in front of Capsule Corporation.

8 - CAPSULE CORP. - When hanging around in the Capsule Corp., Vegeta is much like Goku at home: he cares about comfort, not being overly good-looking. Walking around barefoot, he wears sweatpants and a light top.
9 - SAIYAN SUIT (Topless) - The regular Saiyan suit, but ditching all clothes on the top part, including the gloves. Vegeta likes it to train as it likely makes the Gravity Room training more comfortable to sweat around and push harder.
10 - CITY - Vegeta always has the same kind of simple clothes to go out, meaning trousers and a pullover. However, the colors seem more modern on this one, with near-black trousers, a dark red belt and his trademark blue for the top. He wore those to get to the Tenkaichi Budokai, before changing there for the tournament itself.
11 - SAIYAN SUIT - To participate to the Tenkaichi Budokai, during which protections are not allowed, Vegeta kept his usual Saiyan suit, but ditched the problematic armor. Because of all the events following without much of a break (including his death and resurrection), he will go throughout all of the Majin Boo saga with that suit.
12 - ENDING (City) - 10 years after the defeat of Majin Boo, Vegeta appears with new city clothes to go out, including a bit of his rival's orange and a stylish brown jacket. This costume brings him more maturity than his previous city costumes.
13 - ENDING (Fight) - This is the final costume we see. To participate to the Tenkaichi Budokai, Vegeta has ditched his usual Saiyan suit by that time, with the only remnants of it being the blue top and the gloves. The trousers and shoes are typical Earthling clothes. Could it be that Vegeta feels closer to Earth as years go by, now showing a half-Saiyan, half-human style?

BONUS COSTUMES (2)

Spoiler:

1 - BLACK SAIYAN SUIT - An alternative version of the Saiyan suit, for those in a dark mood or those who find black to be more stylish.
2 - CELEBRATION SUIT - Even in times of celebration, Vegeta is not too keen on bright and flashy colors, so he mostly wears black. But he still makes the effort of having bright trousers to show he is (supposed to be?) ready to celebrate with the rest!

VIDEL

STORY COSTUMES (9)

Spoiler:

1 - ORANGE STAR - The very first costume we see Videl with, as Gohan first meets her during his first day in class. Videl wears her school badge on the waist. She also has those clothes during part of her training with Gohan.
2 - BASEBALL PLAYER - Worn during sports class, and specifically the baseball match. The cap has fallen to the ground here, but is part of the costume.
3 - DAILY HEROINE - A variation of the "Orange Star" clothes, for the same purpose of a day at school, but it happens to be the clothes Videl wears when Gohan first sees her in action as the well-known heroine of Satan City. While the shoes and socks keep the same style, the top is now partly colored in red, and the shorts are replaced with short pants that cover her knees.
4 - TENKAICHI BUDOKAI - Following Gohan's advice, Videl cut her hair for the Tenkaichi Budokai. She spends the last remaining days of training with Gohan in those clothes, and wears them again for the tournament.
5 - CLASSIC MARTIAL ARTIST - Unlike her father, Videl spends the days before the Tenkaichi Budokai still training despite having finished her flight lessons with Gohan. She is seen wearing this costume, which will surely be reminiscent of classic martial artists in a lot of people's minds.

6 - JUST HEALED - Her Tenkaichi Budokai clothes after the torture she endured against Spopovitch, showing the tough time she's bravely (though some will say "stubbornly") been through. It is blood-stained and has additionnal bandage, as well as slightly torn clothes. As she's been just healed, Videl is fully recovered and healthy despite the dry blood on her face and clothes. Before coming out of the room and appearing in front of the others again, she'll choose to change clothes.
7 - FIGHT - Before coming back to watch the rest of the tournament, and most importantly Gohan's match, Videl changes to this new costume with the simple word "FIGHT" written on it. Much like that word and her choice to follow Gohan, it shows that the painful moment she's been through just a few minutes ago hasn't tamed her strong will.
8 - BIRTHDAY PARTY - This is Videl's new style at the time of Bulma's birthday party in Battle of Gods. She wears red clothes along with a symbol of the devil, which is sort of the trademark of her family. Although she is pregnant, it's still fairly recent and one couldn't tell from her appearance. She has a more feminine style than we've ever seen before, much less tomboyish, with her top taking the shape of a mini-skirt below the belt.
9 - EPILOGUE - In the epilogue ten years after the battle against Majin Boo, Videl has again a brand new style. She's a mother now and feels more feminine than ever. Although this can't be seen on this picture, she keeps her red jacket open with a black top under it. Her mini-skirt goes with brown boots.

1 - DESERT THIEF - A costume originally worn by Yamcha when we first see him, suited for battle against anyone he could take as a target to steal their goods. The headband is optionnal and he will often let his hair free-flow.
2 - BATTLE - When starting to date Bulma, Yamcha had to adapt to the city, as he would frequently go in more urban areas than his usual wastelands. Despite keeping a similar costume for battles, the most notable difference is that Bulma had him cut his hair, so that he looked more modern.
3 - BIG CITY LIFE - Yamcha is shown to wear pretty standard costumes when leading his everyday life. He is shown with this specific costume when he learns Goku is assaulting the Red Ribon army.
4 - SUIT - Much like Goku and Krilin back then, Yamcha shows up for the Tenkaichi Budokai in a suit. This would not be the case for future Tenkaichi Budokai, with characters showing up in standard outfits. Perhaps this was a specific rule of Kame Sennin to be well-dressed for the occasion, or perhaps it was because they were taking a public plane at the time (instead of having Bulma fly them to the tournament).
5 - 22rd TENKAICHI BUDOKAI - When Yamcha goes to participate in the 22nd Tenkaichi Budokai, he has a new haircut, but also the Kame Sen dogi that he earned from training with Kame Sennin.

8 - RAINY DAYS - When arriving to the 23rd Tenkaichi Budokai, Yamcha is heavily clothed like Goku and his friends to protect himself from the rain. The costume is ideal to bring a sense of tradition and stylish modernity at the same time. Scars have appeared on his face, a testament to the kind of hard battles he must have gone through during the unseen training years. Even eating a senzu is not enough to heal those scars, which Yamcha will keep for the rest of his life.
9 - 23rd TENKAICHI BUDOKAI - Yamcha still wears the Kame Sen dogi at tournaments and battles in general. This time, he has longer hair, but he has left them tied. It is unknown if it is for the looks or as a way not to have his view covered by his hair during the tournament.
10 - SAIYAN SAGA - Yamcha puts his Kame Sen dogi to fight the Saiyans, but lets his hair flow freely just like when he was a young thief. Perhaps it is a nod to his original, wilder self.
11 - SAIYAN SAGA (Extra weight) - A variation of the Kame Sen dogi with heavy accessories to keep training one's body. This is God's idea. Yamcha's costume looks closer to Goku's usual dogi that way.

12 - BARBECUE - An outfit worn by Yamcha for a nice barbecue with friends at Capsule Corporation. Little did he know that Freezer and his father's upcoming arrival would interrupt this pleasant friendly moment. He has yet another haircut.
13 - CELL SAGA - Yamcha's appearance for most of the events related to the cyborgs and Cell. He still wears his Kame Sen dogi in times of battle, but he has a new, spikier haircut.
14 - BOO SAGA - The costume Yamcha wears to see the Tenkaichi Budokai as part of the audience. Again, new haircut. It is very possible that the black top he wears is the same one than for his "Barbecue" costume.
15 - BOO SAGA (No jacket) - As events of the Majin Boo saga unfold, Yamcha gets more comfortable by removing the jacket during his time at the sanctuary.
16 - BATTLE OF GODS - Clothes reminiscent of Gohan's costume (especially the anime version with those colors) during the 10 days before the Cell Game.
17 - EPILOGUE - 10 years after the Boo saga, Yamcha has a new haircut, with longer, tied hair. To watch the Tenkaichi Budokai with friends again, his costume is similar to the one he previously had, and it is likely the same jacket and trousers. But he has a white T-shirt, as well as another belt.

BONUS COSTUMES (9)

Spoiler:

1 - CELEBRATION - A bright suit with a striking red color. Perfect to celebrate on a happy occasion!
2 - DRIVER DOGI - The classic Kame Sen dogi with additionnal features to protect the user from the wind while driving any bike-type vehicle. The dogi is put over a thick purple top, which adds layers to the chest but also provides protection for the arms. It goes with gloves (which color matches the dogi) and protection glasses.
3 - KIMONO - A costume that evokes Japanese traditions as often represented in various medias. The striking blue fits well with the young Yamcha.
4 - MILITARY - A costume reminiscent of war times, with a bit of a retro charm to it. Yamcha looks like a classic "badass hero" soldier. (and is equiped as such in this picture!)



5 - MODERN CITY BOY - A very modern look for young guys that could definately feel contemporary. With a simple white T-shirt underneath, Yamcha wears an open, stylish jumper.
6 - SANTA CLAUS - An ideal look to celebrate Christmas with everyone.
7 - SUMMER BEACH - With shorts and a sleeveless T-shirt, this costume is ideal to withstand hot temperatures and play on the beach with friends!
8 - MIXING TIMES - A version of Yamcha that mixes two of his styles: the clothes are from his "21st Tenkaichi Budokai to Baba" style while his hair are taken from his "23rd Tenkaichi Budokai and Demon King Piccolo" style.
9 - CHANGE THE FUTURE - An exclusive peek at what Yamcha wore at times while he trained for the cyborgs' arrival. Those clothes are enjoyable for giving him a very different battle appearance compared to his other battle costumes.

A few news:

- I reached the typing limit, so I had to divide the characters into 2 pages for now. And probably more in the future, I'll probably set the posts and pages up by groups (good guys, bad guys, families, Saiyans, Earthlings, etc... We'll see.)

- SON GOHAN has been added (story costumes only). It's the grown-up version, as the other versions will likely be called "SON GOHAN (Kid)" and "SON GOHAN (Cell Game)". Bonus costumes coming soon.

- KAIO SHIN has been added.

- SON GOKU now has his version when possessed by Ginyu as suggested by DNA.

- Battle of Gods has been added for SON GOHAN, SON GOKU and YAMCHA. Regardless of how they look in the final film, the designs are still part of what the author envisions as the manga storyline and his vision of the characters. However, though he made design for GT, I classify Battle of Gods as in the continuity of the manga (Toriyama said himself that he created his stuff in BOG exactly as if continuing the manga), while I classify GT designs as "a possible continuity", and therefore in the bonus categories, not in the "manga main story" section.

- A mistake on my part has been pointed out by dbgtFO and corrected in "Summer Beach" YAMCHA's description.

For now this thread focuses only on costumes designed by Toriyama and shown on drawings by Toriyama himself.
And that's already quite a lot to cover, so let's not add more than the (updated) source material for now, since that would be the minimum we want.

I also avoid minor tweaks to a same costume to go with the latest official update in the Full Color Edition, the "main version" nowadays that decided which variation represent what we can call "the official manga colors", cause otherwise, we'd have like 50 different variations of Goku's dogi with all the different shades of yellow/orange, the boot laces changing colors, etc... Minor tint differences with slightly different shades do not count as a different costume. But striking color changes on a same costume do count as separate costumes (such as Vegeta and Trunks' black suits, Gohan's various training dogi, etc...)

I might add the TV-exclusive costumes at the end in a special section.

No, Toriyama didn't choose anything in the final color comics. It was the Shueisha staff who chose and often tried to offer a compromise between Toriyama and the familiar anime, so as to update and renew, yet not shock minds with colors that would be too far from the well-known anime (as well as including a few of their own artistic choices).

Kaio Shin is the perfect example of that: "let's make him feel new and true to Toriyama's latest revision by giving him a red skin and Kibito a blue skin, but let's catter to fans of the anime with the costume and not shock them with something ultimately too unfamiliar".

So yes, the manga has purple hair for Bulma, yellow "muscles" on Piccolo's arms, white hair for General Red, pink skin for Freezer, etc...
But at the same time, they don't want to scare off fans of the anime with colors that feel too unusual and they keep Karin white, Tao Pai Pai wears pink (when it's yellow on the Perfect Edition / Kanzenban), the Super Saiyan auras are golden once you go Super Saiyan 2 and beyond, Kaio was corrected at the last minute to have his more anime-friendly Kanzenban version, etc...

It's a constant compromise, which Kaio Shin illustrates just with his appearance.

Glad to be useful with those database topics, or even some short articles I made as a reply to an existing thread sometimes. It's the icing on the cake when it's useful to the main website like the recent article on unfinished games (couldn't comment on it on the main page, so I take this occasion to say I'm honored to have my work be useful and even be cited), but even when those database threads stay on this forum only, I'm already just glad that it's useful to some people around to get an overview of specific aspects of the franchise, some things they might have not known, or some things that just didn't catch their attention before).

There is a costume which appears in the anime, which is Goku with Raditz's armor (it's episode 20 IIRC). Since Toriyama drew many designs for that filler episode (such as Planet Vegeta and the Tsufurians) is there a possibility that he drew Goku with armor too? He looked really cool.
