For those that want a new generation to take over, why? I don't get it.

Doctor. wrote:What does Goku have that makes DB what it is? You don't have to replace Goku, putting him in the sidelines won't hurt, as they've done with him plenty of times before. Only instead of putting him in the sidelines for a while, it's for a long time. The next generation stepping up doesn't mean that Goku will never show up again, why do people get this ridiculous idea? lol
Well it's getting your hopes up as Dragon Ball is now too scared to step out of it's time loop. Before the series grew up with us, but now it feels too scared to grow up anymore. I liked watching Goku grow up, and everyone around him grow up. Now they never want to grow up anymore. And now we're at..."LET'S DO THE TIME WARP AGAAAAIN!"

Re: screen time
We're only 1 episode in on Super; there's no saying Gokû won't get temp-sidelined here the way he did in Z. He hasn't really fully main-charactered since the 23rd tournament.
That said, I don't want any new main character replacement because I can't unsee it as someone making their OC fanfic dreams come true and I just can't bring myself to care about a replacement. I was disappointed enough having ssjg replaced by blueper. Replacing Gokû himself would make me drop the series.

Because it's a theme in the series that has been pushed forth once with Roshi -> Goku, and then was tried to be pushed forth three more times (Goku -> Gohan; Goku -> Goten & Trunks; Goku -> Oob), but has always failed to the point where it's starting to get annoying. If the manga never portrayed it as Goku wanting to pass down the torch three times, then no, I wouldn't really care because it would have felt like the next generation becoming main characters would have come out of nowhere. This way, it's just fulfilling something that should have happened a long time ago.

There's a reason many, MANY people prefer the Cell arc or the Freeza arc as the endings to the series where, coincidentally, Goku dies and, in the Cell arc, passes down the torch. There's a reason why many people prefer the Kanzenban ending to the original because of the symbolism, too.

But what would the series be about, Fighting? Comedy? Searching for Dragonballs? All? :shifty:

I agree. If they never pushed that theme at all, as well as some characteristics, I'd have no problem. However they did and it feels like it all exploded like a bunch of crappy streamers. Or fireworks that simply fizzled away.

The question saying that more rivals as strong as Goku coming will hopefully do just this. Not replace Goku, but add a new generation that's not a failure. If anything Dragon Ball has told me, it's the next generation is full of shit, so the previous generation will have to be the ones to take care of all the major issues. Goku could never accomplish what he wanted since he had to deal with that terrible Generation Y. So he abandons his goals of the Cell and Boo arc.

I like Future Trunks way too much to want to stop at the Freeza arc, and I like Vegeta's character development during Buu way too much to want to stop at the Cell arc. Gokû's not the only one affected by lopping off the last two arcs of the manga; you lose a lot of other characters and a lot of those other characters' development. Hell, the Great Saiyaman! I love how Gohan gets all into tokusatsu in the Buu arc; he transitions from just being the nerd to being adorkable. And Mr. Satan's redemption from just being annoying in the Cell arc to being an entertaining likeable guy by the end of the Buu arc.

I like how the manga ended as well, I like the Boo arc too much despite all its flaws. I'm just saying that in my experience talking to other fans, those arcs are where people would usually end the series off.

Even with the simplicity of the series, it moves along, there's progress. The new generation makes perfect sense (with Goku present) in the mold of the series.

I think that's mainly one of the reasons they changed the timeline of the new movies. To have more time to force Goku to be the main character still.

I don't think the popularity of those arcs has anything to do with Goku "passing the torch", certainly not for the majority, as Goku IS the most beloved character..it's just that the Buu arc is generally less popular (and in fact many people who dislike it blame the grown up Gohan for that, and his popularity peaked in the end of the previous arc).

I also don't agree that the series' pushed this theme ever since Roshi/Goku, Mutenroshi was never the main character, he wasn't "replaced" by Goku in the readers' eyes, so that's completely different. Putting things in perspective, he was just Goku's first master, reintroduced in the story after the Pilaf arc with that exact purpose.

Page 45 of the Super Start Guide features one page each from the scripts for episodes 3 and 4. The episode 4 page features Pilaf and co.'s shenanigans, but for now here's the bit from episode 3, taken from the new version of Beerus, Whis, and the Oracle Fish discussing Super Saiyan God:

Whis: “Do your best, Oracle Fish.”
Beerus: “Hey Whis, you feed the Oracle Fish three times a day, right?”
Whis: “Um, that’s right.”
Oracle Fish: *heart skips a beat*
Beerus: “How about lowering it to two times a day?”
Whis: “An excellent idea.”
Oracle Fish: “A-A-Anything but that!”
Beerus: “Then remember for us!”
Oracle Fish: “Alright, I’ll remember. Um, ugh…Super Saiyan God!”
Beerus: “So that really was it, huh? It’s got ‘God’ in the name, so I wonder if it’s a deity?...Geez, what a pain.”
Whis: “But Lord Beerus, there is no such person as ‘Super Saiyan God’.”
Beerus: “The Saiyans might know something about it, so let’s ask them. Oh, wait…Wasn’t the Saiyans’ home Planet Vegeta destroyed by Freeza?”
Whis: “Didn’t you yourself tell him to do so while you slept?”
Beerus: “Well, they really ticked me off. King Vegeta in particular was a real cheapskate. Well at any rate, weren’t the Saiyans destroyed along with Planet Vegeta?”
Whis: “Most were, but a few who were off on other planets escaped. Incidentally, Prince Vegeta is likewise still alive and well.”
Beerus: “What a lucky guy. Whis, is the bath ready?”
Whis: “You’re taking a bath at a time like this?”
Beerus: “I only slept 39 years this time. I want to look sharp.”
Kanzenshuu: Is that place still around?

If he woke up in AGE 774 this time and still slept for 39 years, then he must have went to sleep in AGE 735. Also, this time around, Beerus told Freeza to to destroy planet Vegeta...apparently contradicting Minus and everything else? So much confusion here.

Ugh. That cheapens the death of the Saiyans and Freeza'Freeza's fear.

For comparison,in BoG Beerus says "By the way Whis, did Freeza destroy Planet Vegeta for me while I was sleeping?" (ところでウイス、ボクが眠っている間にフリーザは惑星べジータを破壊しておいてくれたのかな?). Which always made it sound like maybe Beerus ordered Freeza to destroy Planet Vegeta, but there was a certain amount of plausible deniability, like perhaps Beerus just noticed Freeza was gunning to destroy the planet and this happened to suit his purposes. RoF seems to offer some evidence for that idea, with Whis saying Beerus "supported" Planet Vegeta's destruction, rather than "ordered". Here though, we've got Whis saying Beerus "told" Freeza to destroy the planet while he slept (眠っている間にそうするようにと言付けたのはビルス様ではないですか). OK, technically he rhetorically asks whether Beerus was the one who told Freeza to destroy the planet, but the implication is clear enough.

Noooo... so much changes :(
I liked Beerus not wanting to take a bath in BoG director's cut... now he is asking Whis if the bath is ready

... and Beerus did told Freeza to destroy Planet Vegeta.... Ok... :problem:

I can say this is the first thing I absolutely do not like for Super, I disliked that they made Beerus have a hand in Planet Vegeta's destruction before, I was hoping they'd move away from that and instead it sounds like they are going hard on it. It really hurts Freeza's character, the backstory of the Saiyans and the Namek arc a lot.
Beerus is a really good character and he stands on his own, there is no need to try to hamfistedly make him important to existing events in the story.

Does that means that these scenes with Beerus destroying planets from episodes 1 and 2 are not in the same time where Goku and company events are happening?
