I imagine that, if you never saw Dragon Ball Z as it was before, and Kai was your first exposure, it seems more natural to having the pacing it has. Especially for those people who preferred the manga the entire time.
However, as much as I enjoy watching DBZ in a more casual, slightly sped up fashion, I found myself missing some of the filler in the program, probably because I'm so used to it. While I did enjoy them removing a lot of the needlessly long scenes where it's just clouds passing over, rocks floating, and wind picking up, there were scenes and episodes that, quite frankly, I really liked, even if they were filler.
For instance, while I was not a big fan of Princess Snake, I did like the episode where Goku gets trapped in Hell. It gave us, as a viewers, a little peek into more of the afterlife in that universe. I'm sure that us sinners were relieved to find that Hell was surprisingly laid-back.
I loved the scene in the episode where Gohan meets the orphans when he finally gets home, only turn turn around and renew his vow to fight the Saiyans.
Though the Arlia episode had the plotholes about Vegeta and Nappa breathing in space and Vegeta being capable of destroying a planet with a little blast from his finger, it was a good illustration of what a bastard Vegeta is.
Now, some filler I can do without. I'm glad Kai cut out the space orphans and the fake Namek. But if I want to skip those episodes, I just don't watch them.
As a casual watch, Kai is pretty good, but I wouldn't buy the DVDs. I don't find the new music as good as the Kikuchi score, nor the voices as strong as they used to be. And since I watched DBZ with all that filler, I find myself attached to some of it.
I can see why Mike and others got burned out from it.
I, too, noticed the similarities with the original two seasons of the Funimation/Ocean dub. That was the original Kai!
I do owe Kai for getting me back into DBZ and draining my wallet by making me want the Dragon Box.

The victim of violent head trauma as an infant [...] he's a simple bumpkin with a fair share of brain damage who's natural talents to work out what's wrong compensate for his broad lack of common sense. But he's also a fighter, through and through [...] he fight until he has, in no uncertain terms, beaten his enemy on terms they can both acknowledge. He doesn't want to kill anyone, or even prove that he can win... he just wants to know he can. He's an ineffably charming bastard who's manly leanings were really incendental, and yes, the fact that he was voiced by a squeaky woman made the combination perhaps all the more charming.
