If they changed someone like Vegeta/King Kai/Freeza, it wouldn't be the same nostalgic experience for the dub fans as if they kept as much as the original cast as possible.
I've noticed it's usually the die-hard sub fans that say those voices should change when they couldn't care less about the dub.
I'm very hesitant to respond to this, because (much like with the episode itself), I'd love for the focus to be on
the awesome new art book...! Whee!
But, I'll humor everyone.
One of the biggest misconceptions you can make is assuming that just because someone's priority and main interest lies with the original version of something (for argument's sake, let's say "the original Japanese version of DragonBall"), that they don't want an adaptation (for argument's sake, let's say "FUNimation's version of the franchise") to be the best that it can be.
Nonsense.
I want FUNimation's English dub to be the best product on the market. I want it to be awesome. I want it to blow people away. I want it to be completely representative of its amazing original version. Even if it's not something I'm going to watch, it being the most bodacious thing on the planet helps me in a ton of ways:
(1) It may cause people to seek out the original Japanese version, and I'm here and ready with content for them.
(1b) Let's be honest -- it being
bad can cause the exact same reaction, but there can be less negativity all-around if this isn't the case.
(2) I can know that people are experiencing the show similar to how much of the rest of the world experiences it -- that lets us have an amazing collective conversation.
(3) Hey, maybe I'll even switch over to it every so often to check in on how well it's being treated.
If the show is
*not* being treated with that respect, I have every reason to call out its shenanigans and hope for a better product. In the case of
Kai, if FUNimation is willing to concede that the show could use some tough-lovin' to bring it up to speed, then we should expect no less than 110% on that. They have already said "Consistency be damned!" and "Your nostalgia be damned!" with the replacement of certain actors/actresses and phrases, so why accept just a mediocre attempt?
(If your nostalgia glasses are that difficult to remove from your face, well, the first dub from FUNimation isn't going anywhere any time soon. They're phasing it out, but you can still get it, and damn cheap.)
I want that dub to be great. I want to be proud of it AS A DARN TOOTIN' AMERICAN... even if it's not something I'm going to regularly watch.

Like I said on the show, I've done it with certain podcasts before, too! That was back in 2006 or so, though, when most podcasts had only been going for a really short period of time... if they existed AT ALL...
So hey. New book. Here's a sexy Bardock image. It's not a new one, but it's also one that's not in the middle of the damn book and would require me ruining the spine to get.
