DragonBall Collector's Edition Hardcover Manga Dissection.

Post by Tanooki Kuribo » Sat Nov 08, 2008 2:47 am

So today I picked up the DragonBall and DragonBall Z Collectors Edition Manga. Eh, its ... alright. I think I was expecting it to be really awesome but... I don't know. It wasn't anything special.

Here they are spread eagel...

Image

Image

The first thing I noticed was the size, I was expecting it to be like the Shonen Jump Collectors Edition. It was actually much much smaller, just a little bigger then the regular editions. Speaking of the original releases, the original cover art is under the book jacket. So, if you were worried about the cover art sucking ass then you can just take the jacket off I suppose.

Image

Next thing is censorship... Now, this is kind of a wired thing with these books. The DragonBall one is censored but the DragonBall Z one is not. The reason for that is in the first volume of DB, there was some editing (Bulma's boobs...) but in the first volume of DBZ there was really nothing to censor so, it was just a fluke. Unless Iam wrong... If someone here knows of any cencorship in the first volume of DBZ then just let me know. I'll compare.

Image

Oh and by the way, this is a one shot deal. They aren't releasing the whole series like this. I was talking to Kaboom about this before. He said VIZ released some other manga like this, just one shot first volume deals so... :?

Image

Bottom Line: If you were looking for a definitive version of the DragonBall manga in English, this isn't it. While still good for collectors to pretty up there shelf's (which it actually encourages you to do in the jacket flap). I wouldn't waste my money on this if you already have volume 1 of these books.

Many thanks for the scans and the review. :3

I was kind of hoping for something the size of the kanzenban. :(

Disappointed to hear about the censoring too, but not surprised. It is Viz afterall.
On hiatus.

Someone had previously mentioned that this was edited, but I thank you for the dissection Tanook. =/, Viz has both fortunately and unforutnately become too mainstream. Fortunate in the way that now kids can enjoy manga, unfortunate in the way that they feel it must be censored for that to be possible.
For all the flack that FUNimation gets on this forum for their quote about DBZ, there's some modicum of truth to it: a 9-year-old is born every day. Or in some cases, "reborn". DBZ may be a kids' show, but it's been so close to so many hearts all over Japan, America, and quite possibly, even the world.
Damn, talk about poor cover art. The jacket looks about on par with the old bootleg VHs covers that usually consisted of randomly slapped together manga images to a static color background.

Do like how nicely the pages are printed, even if the damn thing's censored.

But really...$20? That must be some high quality paper if they can jack up the price for what's basically an $8 book.

Are all the color pages in color, or are some still in greyscale?

Thanks Kuribo. You're always helping us out in this kind of stuff. Buying the things yourself and giving a review. Thanks, BTW is the paper quality something like their English Daizenshuu?

I don't understand why they had to make the dust jacket so ugly, instead of just duplicating the original cover art.

The only way I was going to pick these up was if Viz were going to continue in this fashion.

so, in short... are these mini sized kanzenban-esque release?!

unless everything is in color, that would might be it.

The covers are... ok? for me anyway... what did you expect? new artwork directly from Toriyama himself?!

stupid question: why Bulma's hair turned from purple to red?!
Next thing is censorship... Now, this is kind of a wired thing with these books. The DragonBall one is censored but the DragonBall Z one is not. If you look closely at DBZ cover, you'll find that it's rated A for All Ages.
but if we want to see if its also sensored, we will have to wait for the second volume. AND volume 19.

Tanooki Kuribo, there is a dialogue I want you to check if they fixed it or not...
in DBZ ch.1, Piccolo said to Raditz: "What say you?! Know you not the one to whom you show such insolence?!"

Did they fix it? or left it as it is?!

Left as is... I think it's just the way Piccolo talks.

I was thinking the same thing. :?

All the color pages are there.

He doesn't have that Yoda thing going on in the original; it's something Viz added in (by...Trish Lagill, was it?).

Well, at least there's that. That's pretty cool.

Yeah, he never talks like that in the original. I never understood Viz... Don't know why it was added, made Piccolo sound like a clown. I think they made him normal later though, did they not?:?

This is Viz. The same people who are going to publish 11 Naruto books within 3 months, while leaving other manga like One Piece, Hikaru no Go and Gintama to have 1 new book release between every 3 to 5 months.

I totally ranted all about that the other night, so I'm all ranted out; but yeah. I hate Viz for being total jerks to anyone who likes their non-Naruto titles.

Apparently they use all the money I give them when I buy Dr Slump, DB, Detective Conan, Tenchi Muyo, Ranma, Kenshin, and One Piece and spend it on their precious Naruto. :?

(And I hope trying to speed-release these 11 volumes comes back to bite them in the rear).

I'm boycotting Viz after Dr. Slump finishes. :D

I can't even find anymore Dr. Slump releases in my area, regardless of where I go. Hell, the bookstores here are starting to thin out Dragon Ball and One Piece to make more room for massive numbers of Naruto. :x

The fact that Viz is barely into Alabasta makes me facepalm. Then again I wouldn't be complaining if it were my favorite manga having 11 books released every fucking 3 months.

Edit: I take that back they are farther in then I had originally thought but it's still nowhere near where it should be.
