Re: Explain why you dislike retcons and want everything be unchangeably set on stone
I may be reading too little into this, but it seems really obvious to me. If I get some information, I expect it to stay it that way unless there's a good, in-story, explainable reason to change it. An out-of-universe retcon, contradicting something already established for no particular reason, does ...

Re: Krillin's death is still sad
I think it's a testament to Toriyama's abilities as a writer that he can make us mourn for characters in a world where 1) the afterlife is a pretty sweet place and 2) death isn't at all permanent.
Well, at that point we didn't know much about what the afterlife was like in the Dragon World. Plus ...

Re: Why is the Jaco manga good but Dragon ball Minus bad?
I personally think they tried to make Goku's backstory slightly more palatable to a Western audience, or at least turn it into what they think is more palatable. Not that I agree with this, but I find it likely.
They (Toriyama, his editor, or whoever dictated the story) may have thought that the ...

Re: Biggest retcon in DragonBall?
I'm not sure right now, but did Vegeta ever mention it? I don't find it hard to believe that Radditz didn't know about Tarble (weakling and everything), but Vegeta stating it would turn Tarble into a plothole.
He did say that

Re: Biggest retcon in DragonBall?
I can't recall exactly, but wasn't it stated explicitly at the start of DBZ that there were only 4 remaining Saiyans? I find Tarble to be a stretch just like Bulma's sister. What does this long lost sister bring to the show anyway?

Re: Biggest retcon in DragonBall?
Bulma's sister, and Bulma knowing her sister went off somewhere with a spaceman. I don't dislike Tights, but that is a bad retcon.
Bulma having a sister is definitely a retcon but not an unbelievable in my mind at least.

Re: Biggest retcon in DragonBall?
Really, it's how writers use retroactive continuity that makes or breaks them. Bucky being alive and used as a Soviet spy/assassin while Cap was on ice was great, the Xorn.... everything is a hot mess that remains a mess no one can untangle.
Xorn is a perfect example of several type 2 retcons on ...

Re: Biggest retcon in DragonBall?
Let's remember that retcons are not necessarily logical impossibilities. Goku and Piccolo being aliens instead of a human and a demon, respectively, is still a plausible idea. Now, maybe it was not obvious enough during the early days of Dragon Ball, but there were always hints that most of the ...

Re: How would you write a "Dragon Ball Next Generation" series?
Can it be done well? Sure, but I don't have any interest in it. I prefer seeing the aging gunfighter's last ride to seeing the new generation take over. It's fine as a coda, but I don't want it as the focal point.
This. The series was so focused on Goku that I doubt that taking that focus away ...

Re: Could Funimation have Censored "Mr. Satan" Differently?
It's already been mentioned above but seriously in the Japanese version they pronounce Satan as "Sat-Ann" which sounds a lot more like Saturn than Satan, the only way it could have been more perfect would have been if Saturn was God of the underworld.

Oh, no! I was referring to YonedgeHP. Sorry for not being clear enoughBajosexto wrote:I'm not trying to excuse Chi-Chi's name change. Regardless if it was changed by the client, the dub director or the translator, I still see it as a censorship.

Re: Could Funimation have Censored "Mr. Satan" Differently?
Naming Chi-Chi as Milk was not a censorship decision, it was the client who made up those terms based from the Zero y el Dragón Mágico script, which was based on the Harmony Gold dub. But they kept her name, like Ox-Satán, when his name is Rey Gyuma.

Re: What was the purpose of the biblical reference in this DBZ song?
Sounding cool and tying with the concept of a Messiah?
I wouldn't give too much thought to Biblical references in anime unless I'm certain that they're used as such and not for effect.
I don't know, the bottom of the page says that it's a reference to this specific verse:

If they had at least gone with a Devil pun or variant, I wouldn't have minded. That said, I don't know of a good one they could have used. Videl and Lucifer are taken, Diablo would be too obvious. I'm sure they could have thought of something decent, but Savage ...

Re: Super coming to Spain... controversy included.
I'm not following the dub, but I'm reading comments and anecdotes about it, and it's baffling, to say the least. They're saying that since the dub is uncut, and there's no video editing nor alternate lines involved, just cutting bits of the video, the censorship is incredibly jarring, even cutting ...

Re: All purpose headcannon's
I like to think that Freeza's torture in Hell, as seen in RF and Super, is something he can escape any time he wants. That's why all the fairies are saying "Smile!" to him: if he actually learned to smile and be happy, he'd be reformed and allowed to reincarnate. But, being Freeza, this isn't ...
