Japanese anime mags of the day...poor DB/Z coverage

Just going through my magazine collection and that's one thing I noticed...very few mags ever had a DB or DBZ cover, let alone interior contents other than the TV episode listings. This seemed to be universal, regardless of the publisher. Seems odd that a series that was popular enough at the time t...

Re: Was Dragon Ball really completely unknown in America in the late 1980's?

A Dragon Ball animated movie received a respectable theatrical release in the US where it was treated like an actual film, and was the first Japanese movie to be shown in IMAX 3D. That has to count for something. Lots of things get that treatment but for a long time other than art house or ethnic c...

Re: Were there any Dragon Ball releases on Betamax?

I specifically meant DB films, not Z. I should have made that more clear so my bad. No problem. At least if anyone is looking for the old LDs, they now have something to go on. As far as Dragon Ball itself, there is nothing in my LD catalogs spanning 1986 - 1996. But I might have some other handout...

Re: Were there any Dragon Ball releases on Betamax?

Yes. In Japan all the Dragon Ball movies and the first Dragon Ball Z movie were released on Betamax, VHS, LaserDisc, and 8mm film. Following that, they were released on VHS, LaserDisc, and 8mm film. Never seen any laserdiscs for the DB films or proof that they even exist, apart from the 10th annive...

Re: Were there any Dragon Ball releases on Betamax?

Not 8mm FILM. But 8mm tapes I could see. Maybe even VCD, though that was more a thing in China. I do remember seeing some stuff released on that format but not DB specifically... Yes 8mm film. 8mm tape isn't really a thing, as far as I know. Anyway, yes, it was most likely Super-8, which was a fair...

Just use the stereo inputs. You aren't going to get better than stereo sound. The cables on the Hauppage cover all that anyway...

Re: Were there any Dragon Ball releases on Betamax?

Might be difficult to find after all these years and you have to worry about things like laser rot, not to mention low pressings. I have a lot of catalogs from late 1980s to about 1995 and none of them list Dragonball. Toei's own publication New Disc Press from April/May 1995 doesn't have ANY DB dis...

Re: Super Episode 130 (18 March 2018)

One thing that has been bothering me about this show is the universes that got exempted because their inhabitants had power levels significantly higher than the ones that were in the Tourny. So, seeing how ridiculously high the power levels got to be in this show, how much higher can they go? Can th...

Re: Was Dragon Ball really completely unknown in America in the late 1980's?

It would be fun for a lot of old time fans to just sit around and talk about the old days. Many people don't get the history of anime fandom at all. I used to keep a box of stuff around that was labeled just that. It included letters, early fanzines, CFO materials, APAs, etc. going back to the late ...

Re: Better Sound Quality for Original DBZ?

For Toei, I'd guess everything they produced prior to DBGT. Well, possibly more, possibly less. GT's original audio masters do exist, but Toei just aren't using them. Weren't they broadcast in stereo after the initial few were run in mono? I assume they have been capped in reruns by Japanese fans? ...

Re: Better Sound Quality for Original DBZ?

Hokuto no Ken = Fist of the North Star For Toei, I'd guess everything they produced prior to DBGT. That's a lot of series and episodes. For other studios? Who knows. And, you'd have to get the episodes from tapes that were hifi audio recordings as the mono linear track would be no better than the op...

Re: Better Sound Quality for Original DBZ?

I'm sorry to open an old thread but according to industry people on the cinemtography site, Optical audio is lower frequency than I thought: http://www.cinematography.com/index.php?showtopic=20550 So, probably somewhere between 4 and 6 kHz. Pretty LoFi! With a bit of tweaking, you can get it to soun...

Re: What If: Toriyama Retired?

Do any Manga artists ever retire? Miyazaki says he is retired from making movies but he has other stuff going on and sometimes helps out other directors. Tezuka died while still making stuff as did others like Shigeru Mizuki. Can't see Toriyama ever retiring really. Or do you mean just from Dragonba...

Re: What's your most recent Dragonball purchase?

May I inquire as to why you decided to buy these? Not that I object, I'm just curious. To watch the dub mainly. I've been tryna do a full viewing of the Toonami broadcast dub (or at least something similar) and the VHS tapes and single DVDs were the things closest to it. I was only really aiming fo...
