Re: Funimations 30th anniversary collectible home video release

I think Funimation knows they have casual buyers to whom whether or not there is any more detail on a remaster slapped onto a UHD disc. The Season Blu-Rays have less detail than the orange bricks at times due to the smearing of backgrounds but it sold because it was an iconic title on the new hot ph...

Re: Dragon Ball Rewatch, Week 27 - DB episode 121-125

Episode 121 - Son Goku’s Greatest Crisis!! From this episode we see the escalation of stakes in Goku and Daimao's battle. In the beginning there is still some hand and foot combat between the two, and some strategic fight choreography, particularly from Goku, but in the latter part of the episode w...

Re: What are the chances of Freeza becoming a genuinely good guy?

None, nor should there be. He may respect the likes of Goku and Vegeta as warriors constantly striving to better themselves, but it will always be a means to an end, he will see them as potential henchmen at best. Also the trope of villains having a change of heart is overdone in Dragon Ball and it ...

Re: Dragon Ball Rewatch, Week 27 - DB episode 121-125 (CURRENT WEEK)

Popo's martial arts philosophies are both interesting and easy to understand. These are good lessons to impart to the children watching. Most certainly. I like how it was phrased in the Blue Water dub (tranquil as the sky and quick as a lightning bolt). It's a good lesson for kids to have initiativ...

Re: Possible details on Selecta Vision's Dragon Ball (1986-1989) bluray release

If this happens, then I hope MangaUK import it. :D Ditto, I have their banana bricks and they are fine for the most part but OG Dragon Ball is definitely a series that needs an upgrade, I'd also love to support this show again in the UK because it gets so little love compared to Z. And actually hav...

Re: Do you still enjoy non-canon Dragon Ball content?

I have never even heard anything that Toriyama "wrote a seal of approval" . But if it means "if Toriyama wrote it, then it's more legitimate", then it's kind of pointless when it comes to Dragon Ball Super and Dragon Ball Online. We don't know what comes from him and what doesn't. It was a figure o...

Re: Do you still enjoy non-canon Dragon Ball content?

Another question along the same lines should be this. Does it really matter whether or not a story within the Dragon Ball world is written by Toriyama? Some might say of course it does because Toriyama is the creator and the definitive experience is his vision, but really if other writers, artists a...

Re: Most underwhelming character death in the franchise?

Piccolo's RF anime death, as it tries and completely fails at recapturing what made the original work. Pretty much. It was a poor imitation slapped on for fan service. Goku's reaction also lacked the mourning needed to make a death matter. Worst written and executed death in the series by a country...

Re: Do you still enjoy non-canon Dragon Ball content?

Well considering the fact there is no definitively defined canon for Dragon Ball and there are things I enjoy in all content outside the original 1984-1995 manga, I'd have to say yes. Bardock special is definitely a standout for being a story which Toriyama admitted he wouldn't have written himself ...

Re: The hills we choose to die on and the fights we battle for when it comes to Dragon Ball

(Rock The Dragon doesn't count; it went out of print immediately, and the only thing it had that wasn't already on the old DVD singles was Saban's Tree Of Might. Where's the Androids and Boo sagas? Where are the Blue Water dubs of DB and GT? Where's Kai?) Well considering the original dub of DBZ se...

Re: The hills we choose to die on and the fights we battle for when it comes to Dragon Ball

I was curious about OG Dragon Ball because of the flashbacks and references, but it definitely took more time to get used to than Z, especially as a kid when the transformations and insane fights were much more important to me. I still enjoy them, but now as an adult fan I have much greater apprecia...

Re: Dragon Ball Rewatch, Week 26 - DB episode 116-120

Episode 116 - Kame-Sen’nin’s Alive?! One of the darkest and most mysterious episodes thus far. Not only is the cave Goku and Yajirobe have found themselves in dark and everlasting, but it will turn out to be full of trickery and twists. As Goku goes off on his own and punches a character shrouded i...

Re: Dragon Ball Rewatch, Week 25 - DB episode 111-115 (CURRENT WEEK)

I'll probably also see about throwing in the original dub episode numbers too, in case anyone wants to follow along through that route. (Given that DB Ireland is watching the Blue Water dub, I'm guessing he may go that route so he sticks with Ocean for Z?) I've been watching the Saban dub separatel...

Re: Dragon Ball Rewatch, Week 25 - DB episode 111-115 (CURRENT WEEK)

Love how serious the series has gotten in these episodes. Looking back this arc is definitely OG Dragon Ball at its best. My thoughts on the previous week, current week to follow: Episode 111 - Kame-Sen’nin’s Final Mafuba!! From the onset of this episode there is a sense of uncertainty and fear buil...

Re: The hills we choose to die on and the fights we battle for when it comes to Dragon Ball

The Ocean cast shouldn't be written off because of their performances in the Westwood dub, and there's no reason to think their performances in the mythical Kai dub couldn't be as good, or even better than the Funi cast.

Re: Dragon Ball Rewatch, Week 24 - DB episode 106-110

Episode 106 - The Demonic Beast – Tambourine Draws Near!! This episode focuses on the development of Goku and Yajirobe's relationship, despite the latter not viewing the former as a friend, the continuing terror of Tambourine and Daimao's orders. Goku and Yajirobe share a commonality in their hunte...

Also worth noting, Fullmetal Alchemist was written by a female author but it still fits the "shonen" demographic. Inuyasha is no different from it and Dragon Ball.

Re: Are there any parts of the world where OG Dragon Ball is more popular than Z?

I can't think of any examples either, but I think the fact TOEI never did a Kai for OG Dragon Ball and renamed it DBZ Kai for international audiences speaks volumes. Regardless of quality, Z is infinitely more popular, there's no contest.

Re: "You're a Weeb"

I can't fully deny Funi's marketing strategy, though. The DB franchise had failed multiple times in the US already, and considering how small the company was back then, they had to bet on the safest, most reasonable way to appeal to the American children at the time. Anime in general was not treate...
