I really like that idea since it would be different to actually justify a RoF arc and seems like a good enough explanation to why Freeza got so strong

You may not like it, but others including myself do and its apart of the franchise (like Evolution sadly) no matter how you feel about it . I think its picking up in terms of quality and think it is getting better than BoG. Also canon is mostly personal opinion and they never said anything was canon.
