Re: Do you actually believe that we are currently in some second Dragon Ball golden age?
Ignoring how popular Dragon Ball was in the west during 1999-2004 would be like ignoring the Pokemania era of 1999-2000. It might not have correlated with the Japanese popularity as was the case with Pokemon, but it's clearly a significant period where the show was so big it was being referenced in...

Re: What do you expect from Broly?
I think the execs who pushed Toriyama to create a marketable, "canon" Broly may have shot themselves in the foot. Because what always happens to Goku's rivals? They get surpassed and used as a measuring stick for the next one. But have you considered that it's funny watching the badasses ...

Re: What do you expect from Broly?
I never disagreed with you that Gohan is the most willing to jump to the aid of others. That he wants to help people (unlike his father and the rest of the cast) is one of the things that made Gohan my favorite character for so long. But he's only like that after he's pushed towards the edge. Unlike...

Re: What do you expect from Broly?
He's not afraid of violence. Where is this narrative coming from? More than any other character Gohan balks at going all out. Even when his back is against the wall and he's watching people dropping, he needs to be psyched up to actually go do something. Maybe it's not fear of violence. Maybe it's ...

Re: What do you expect from Broly?
Yes, Gohan is probably the most moral character in DB. Unfortunately he's also depicted as afraid of violence, likeliest to abandon training, and as far too normal a person for the world of dragon ball. I wish that weren't the case. Gohan was my favorite character when I was a teen. But the story is...

Re: What if dragon ball was a comic book series?
I know. And part of me thinks he kept jumping the plot forward because he was exhausted. Compare the lush Thailand inspired backgrounds of the 21st Budokai to what we were gettng on Namek. That's another benefit of the western comic paradigm. You trade a consistent voice for a better rested lead. An...

Re: What if dragon ball was a comic book series?
It's not a question of need. It's an oppurtunity to expand on something or do something different/new with the story. That's the advantage of comics, you aren't tied down to themes/genre of the original. That was the point of my Oolong Lunch example. They're two characters who, while fun, are poorly...

Re: What if dragon ball was a comic book series?
Having multiple wrters probably would have kept the stories interesting for much longer but the comedy probably wouldn't be as consistent. I;m not sure if the trade off would be worth it. Longer than a decade? Maybe, but doubtful. Doubt all you like. The manga is full of missed oppurtunities and, m...

Re: What do you expect from Broly?
I don’t see the point of making a canon and good version (as opposed to his 1993 evil version) of the character if it’s just to let him rot in Vampa. So I think they will use him sooner or later in the story, as "the third main saiyan" indeed, since Gohan can no longer fill that role. I d...

Re: What do you expect from Broly?
Just the early stuff in general. We're so far gone from Eastern mysticism and wuxia pastiche things are starting to look like a mid 2000s playbypost dragonball rpg board. Which is fine (I was part of those rpg boards) but it's so weird trying to pitch the current stuff to people who didn't become su...

Re: Do you actually believe that we are currently in some second Dragon Ball golden age?
From what I can see the relationship between Dragon Ball and other manga/anime has flipped. The days of DB as the standard setter are entirely over. Artists and animators moving into the field aren't looking at Super and saying "wow! I want to make my own version of that!" But that aside, ...

KEITH LEE! I fucking love him. He's like a cheerful, black Vader (rip). Guy is stupid athletic for his size and body type.
Great sense of humor too.

Re: Unpopular DB opinions
Even as far as Goku’s selfish actions are concerned, the only character who’s ever really called him out for it has been Bulma, and she’s not exactly the most moral person on the planet. I don’t know if that was an attempt by Toriyama to inexplicably turn Bulma into the moral center of the series, ...

Re: Unpopular DB opinions
I wish Goku were a more sinister battle junkie (like HxH's Hisoka) instead of Peter Griffin, Kung Fu Master. What I find most fun about selfish, amoral (and I do mean amoral as opposed to immoral) characters is just how they warp what would otherwise be "good" ideals and play with how the ...

I honestly don't mind Feeza being "stronger." The more I think about it, the more it makes sense. Of course I wish Freeza had done more than torture one of his minions for a few months but the idea that Freeza would leap ahead in battle power once he understood ki is perfectly reasonable t...

Re: What Would It Take For Krillin, Tien, Piccolo, and Yamcha to Catch up to Goku and Vegeta in a Satisfying Way?
I think the answer depends on who we're trying to satisfy. Dragonball doesn't follow the logic of other shonen animes despite it being considered their progenitor. Even though Naruto and Bleach and One Piece and the rest inevitably push their characters in to giant tests of "power" each of...
