Re: Where will the franchise go after Super?

I feel that's how it was in most of DB amd most of the development went to other characters around Goku. Goku started out as a jungle boy, makes friends, trains with multiple martial arts masters, gets married and has kids. That was kind of the end of his development and after the Freeza saga he ...

Re: "Dragon Ball Xenoverse 3" Official Discussion Thread.

A brand new Toriyama™ sounds promising too. It's certainly gonna be DBO 2.0, same concept of a "Dragon Ball world in the futureeeeeee!" but in that same vein, slightly sad that it is not a literal DBO 2.0 reworked and updated for the modern era.

I expect to see a number of elements pulled from ...

Re: "Sparking! ZERO" Official Announcement, Pre-, & Post-Release Discussion Thread

I dunno why they're being coy with the Devilman reveal. Wasn't he in Tenkaichi 3 like the rest of these guys?

I'm more excited for brand new characters like Champa or Cheelai or Jaco, tbh. I'd love if they just got weird with it and gave us folks from Toriyama's other properties to boot.

Re: Unpopular DB opinions

Fair enough.

Battle of Gods is up there for me as well, for whatever it's worth; so much that I'm likely to end up tuning into its anime remake-of-a-remake (lol) at some point, even if the notion of such a thing doesn't exactly rouse me.

Re: Unpopular DB opinions

Before everyone screams "BUT BROLY!!!!!", what does that movie have besides its good visuals ? Broly is basically a prettier Resurrection F.

Bruv... come on. You already asked this question in another thread, and I answered it directly in sufficient detail.

If you're curious about why I liked ...

Re: Unpopular DB opinions

DBH characters like Cumber comes off as some OC that a kid would write and be like "He can one shot every Super Saiyan in his base form" on the playgrounds.

This is a rather cold take, friend. Cumber is one of the edgiest official designs in Dragon Ball history.

Probably my least popular ...

Re: How do you feel about the trope where everyone waits for Goku?

^ To add, the seeds were also sown through A) the arc cycling through a large cast of characters, and B) Earth having already exerted the greatest influence on Buu from guys like Mr. Satan and Bee. I don't find it even a little surprising that Toriyama saw the Genkidama as a fitting climax ...

Re: How do you feel about the trope where everyone waits for Goku?

Gohan sitting around for his potential unlock is exactly what makes his particular situation work. This is a guy who was repeatedly established to have insane potential since almost his introduction in the manga, so now, because he slacked off, he has to wait an insane amount of time to have it ...

Re: How do you feel about the trope where everyone waits for Goku?

That said, once Goku and Vegeta step back into the spotlight, the story should have stayed with them.

Can't say I would have enjoyed that as much, myself.

The beauty of the Buu arc is that it's a smorgasbord of ideas, characters, storylines, and conflicts; much of which actually does pan out to ...

Re: How do you feel about the trope where everyone waits for Goku?

The only Saiyans to be born from Super Saiyan parents are Goten, Trunks, Bra and Pan. Before Goten and Trunks no Saiyan were born from Super Saiyan parents. Gohan was born when Goku didn't even know what a Saiyan was.

Although I'm in agreement with the thrust of what you're saying – and as we ...

Re: How do you feel about the trope where everyone waits for Goku?

I don’t get why Toriyama tried to do that whole “next generation” idea in the first place. Did he think Goku was getting too old or something?

I missed this post. I think he only tries to do it for a short period.

In the Cell arc, Toriyama does it unironically; probably out of a desire to ...

Re: How do you feel about the trope where everyone waits for Goku?

From a storytelling perspective, the Ginyu Force section is the nadir of the manga for me.

That's not to say they're not enjoyable characters, nor does it argue that they don't serve a purpose. These guys are goofy as fuck and provide a ton of much-needed levity and comic relief to an arc that's ...

Re: How do you feel about the trope where everyone waits for Goku?

Vegeta's #1 speech is so good as a final capstone to his storyline throughout the series that it single-handedly justifies bringing him back, and further justifies the existence of Super Saiyan 3 beyond just being a red herring.

That's why I love the Buu saga. It isn't just about the next ...

Re: How do you feel about the trope where everyone waits for Goku?

The Saiyaman stuff, his Next World training with the Elder Kaioshin and the Z-Sword among others had some potential but then his character arc pretty much petered out after that point.

I still don't see any of this as his character arc petering out. The culmination of Gohan's throughline in the ...

Re: How do you feel about the trope where everyone waits for Goku?

It's so beneath them I'm shocked you're even making that a defense.

Frankly, I'm more surprised you're shocked that I would say it. I've always maintained principally that the characters in any story are merely vehicles for that story's themes. There's no "unfairness" here; they don't exist in ...

Re: How do you feel about the trope where everyone waits for Goku?

It's not a "massive stretch", it's explicitly what happened.

I don't care about numbers and power levels, mind you. That's not even what that scene was meant to convey thematically, as was specifically laid out by the dialogue.

He doesn't gain anything as a character; or rather, what he did gain if you wanted to stretch the narrative is immediately undermined by his complete and utter failure and ejection from the narrative thereafter, and from a purely on-the-page view of things he seeminfly just dicked off and stopped ...

Re: How do you feel about the trope where everyone waits for Goku?

Yes, Gohan does get his potental untapped and yet nothing pays off from it. Untapped, but unfulfilled. The entire arc puts him in Goku's place as the "Wait for ____" guy and then when that moment happens, once the tables turn against him rather than overcoming the circumstances, just gets tossed ...

Re: How do you feel about the trope where everyone waits for Goku?

Um, okay.

Let's just forget about Gohan's arc coming full circle with his untapped potential (established since his introduction in the manga) while learning to strike that delicate balance between being a scholar and fighter that defends his friends, or Piccolo helping to support others instead ...
