Re: Dragon Ball Super: Manga Chapter 103 - Official Discussion Thread

LoganForkHands73 and TKA just to say you've written some very good posts over the course of this thread. I've really enjoyed them. A small question:
TKA wrote: Sat Mar 23, 2024 1:10 pm except Cell, funnily enough
Why do you think Cell was written as an exception to this general trend? It's something I wondered about a bit myself.

Yes I did! I saw the Sub on my own and the Dub with my children. In both cases the theater was pretty empty. How was it in Sligo or Mayo?

No worries, I know what you mean. We had a somewhat similar thing in Ireland where people had to switch to Anglophone names from Gaelic originals to survive economically. It's a complicated issue.

Re: Why does Vegeta still insist on using Goku's original Saiyan name?

You'll see this in Western fiction as well, say novels set in the 19th Century where a character might have been born in Cherokee culture but now goes by "John" until somebody from his tribe shows up and calls him by his Cherokee name. Like Kryptonians often call Superman Kal-El. It's just...

Re: How would the Dragon Ball fandom react if Jiren were made into a gay man?

If "X anime character were gay", in a manner that was non-stereotyping, you might see it expressed in quite a different way from Western media. For example one of the major problems Japanese conservatives in Shinto organisations have with homosexuality is that they fear the resulting "...

Re: UK Screenings for Dragon Ball Super : Super Hero

People I've talked to at a few cinemas have said it's doing reasonably well. It was booked out a few nights in cinemas in the Dublin commuter belt.
That's Dub though. Sub is doing badly as it always does for anime here.

Did Toriyama ever explain in an interview or essay why he altered the final chapter for the Kanzenban like that?

Re: Beerus and Whis are the worst characters in the history of Dragon Ball

Whis at the very least is very far off Dragonball's worst character. Ignoring minor characters, even Buu and Cell are far more one-dimensional than Whis. Some of Whis's dialogue with Merus is actually contemplative, which is very rare in Dragonball, and his attempts to aid the Goku without transgres...

Re: Dragon Ball Super: Manga Chapter 86 - Official Discussion Thread

Although I think the fight was too long overall, the last two chapters have had some nice little details. Like Goku kicking Gas upward and then releasing a follow up blast from his foot. There have been plenty of things like that during this fight, like the train exchange. I hope next month gives a ...

Re: UK Screenings for Dragon Ball Super : Super Hero

I'm surprised actually at some of the places that got it. I'd have expected more places in the Dublin commuter belt. Seems whether it's sub or dub depends on the cinema company.

Re: Why haven't we seen female Namekians?

As a side comment I think one thing to keep in mind is that Kami is really intended to be a Shinto kami, not a European style god. I've seen David Chart, a leading expert on Shinto who worked for Jinja Honcho, say that translationing "god" for "kami" isn't really accurate at all....

Re: Absurdities of claiming that canon does not exist

In my opinion Dragonball is simply a typical type of setting with a rough common core of accepted events and concepts, but no hard "canon". Some settings have a near totally consistent canon worked out, some go even further than this in that setting consistency is actually used to generate...

Re: Dragon Ball Super: Manga Chapter 85 - Official Discussion Thread

The fight choreography was pretty good. I still think Gas isn't interesting enough to sustain a fight this long, but the drag might be a result of reading it month to month. It has made me curious what was the contemporary opinion in Japan about various parts of the Buu arc. The page count of this a...

sorry, maybe i got it wrong and worded it incorrectly, i'm at the doctors, but i thought the like, setting of it being salary men with ties and ran like a modern (well, 1988/1991) office was a dragon ball original thing ? If you're interested it would be taken pretty heavily from Chinese folk belie...

Re: Dragonball Super doesn't feel like Dragonball

The anime doesn't feel the same, but that's more to do with changes in how anime is produced and the current popular styles in Japan. Similarly late Z is quite different from early Dragonball. The manga feels the same throughout to me though, witht the biggest shift being around the appearance of Te...

Re: Dragon Ball Super: Manga Chapter 84 - Official Discussion Thread

I think back to Goku's training with Popo where he is taught to avoid wasted movements. Since that philosophy jives with Migatte no Gokui , I wouldn't necessarily expect environmental destruction from simple movement. Yes actually I understand what you mean, as well as the rest of what you wrote. F...

Re: Dragon Ball Super: Manga Chapter 84 - Official Discussion Thread

I liked the panel with Gine holding Raditz's hand, it's the first proper image of him as a member of the family. The rest of the chapter was a bit of a standard fight I wasn't too interested in. For the arc in general: Regarding Bardock, it's a bit hard to know what to say. I do prefer the original ...
