Re: Dragon Ball Without Its Creator

I don’t necessarily think its a bad idea to go past end of Z, I assume that discussion was already had with Toriyama and so they know what his feelings were. I'm just eager to see us get an actual progression of time, I wanna see Pan grow up. I wanna see Goten and Trunks as adults, id like to see an...

Re: Dragon Ball Super: Manga Chapter 103 - Official Discussion Thread

I really liked the more slice of life stuff(aside from the Goku forgetting Pan thing), I feel they could have cut the fight scenes all together and just focused on that. I dont know if we're retconning Gohan power set though, the way they describe his anger in this chapter is not the way it was ever...

Re: The end of "Akira Toriyama canon"

I'm surprised he knew going into the Boo arc he was going to end it and still tried to make Gohan the lead character. I just assumed the attempt to make Gohan the main character was to try to make the manga run a bit longer, while acknowledging Goku had been exhausted as a character. I think the de...

Re: The end of "Akira Toriyama canon"

I'm sure Goku probably thought the afterlife would be more exciting thanit ultimately was(although if we’re going by the anime continuity, then it was exciting) I suppose the afterlife being more exciting in the anime ties into Toei's more upstanding characterisation for Goku. There, the idea that ...

Re: The end of "Akira Toriyama canon"

The whole thing about Goku being a selfish prick was never really even hinted until the 23rd world martial arts tournament in a throw away line by Roshi. From the beginning of DB all the way until right before the end of the saiyan arc, Goku wasn’t depicted as a guy who would willingly exacerbate a ...

Re: The end of "Akira Toriyama canon"

Once Goku was revealed to be an alien, pretty much every aspect of his personality was retroactively established as being the result of his Saiyan heritage. Even his appetite is apparently because of his biology, and the only reason he isn’t evil is because he has brain damage. Hell given the conte...

Re: The end of "Akira Toriyama canon"

I don't think anything's changed or that willingness to train is related to race. Saiyans have a love for fighting but not necessarily for training; the former is universal/almost universal, the latter is probably as individualized for Saiyans as it is for humans. A lot of Saiyans from the old days...

Re: The end of "Akira Toriyama canon"

Weirdly enough, The thing about the half breed saiyans not having the will to improve and push themselves like their full blooded fathers always kind of rubbed me the wrong way, at least when you incorporate the context of the original DB. When Goku went through his adventures as a kid, he contende...

Re: The end of "Akira Toriyama canon"

I'm sure Goku probably thought the afterlife would be more exciting thanit ultimately was(although if we’re going by the anime continuity, then it was exciting) Isn't that one anime mini-arc semi-canon? The Grand Kai is directly referenced in Toriyama's material and one of the filler Kais makes a c...

Re: The end of "Akira Toriyama canon"

My initial reading of Goku choosing to stay dead was that he was going to stay away from the earth regardless and so he tells them not to waste their time wishing him back. It was a conscious choice on his part to stay away because he felt he was a bad influence. Thats what I understood from the en...

Re: The end of "Akira Toriyama canon"

I mean sure, circumstances dictated Goku needed to comeback. But the story itself never has Goku address his entire reasoning for staying dead in the Cell arc, the question becomes why Goku feels differently now compared to the past. Theres no dialogue or internal thought process to provide insight...

Re: The end of "Akira Toriyama canon"

Its more about that narrative being put on a particular path that eventually goes nowhere, imo it is bad writing to make a big deal out of the fact that earth has to learn to live without Goku only to later to bring him up without any tangible follow up on that narrative thread. Its the thing GRRM ...

Re: The end of "Akira Toriyama canon"

The whole thing about staying dead to begin with had nothing to do with whether or not he could feasibly come back to life and more about how he feels the earth is better off if he wasn’t around to attract bad guys. Goku was choosing to remain dead and stay out of earthly affairs, it wasn’t a restr...

Re: The end of "Akira Toriyama canon"

Which I can believe, but I'm just saying that narratively its contradictory. I disagree and think it's an overstatement to claim that he's undercutting what he said about trusting the kids by coming back to life. He did trust the kids to beat Buu, they just failed. He did trust Gohan to beat Buu, h...

Re: The end of "Akira Toriyama canon"

Wouldn’t mind seeing DB end but whether its disrespectful will depend on what Toriyamas wishes were. Which I'm guessing he relayed privately to the staff? AFAIK, he wasn’t against GT being made was he?

Re: The end of "Akira Toriyama canon"

Ultimately, I feel that reinstating the status quo basically destroyed years of ground work that Toriyama laid out from Saiyan arc all the way to Cell. You can argue that bringing Goku back to life as earths protector in the Buu saga contradicts the ending of the cell arc, and it completely undercu...

Re: The end of "Akira Toriyama canon"

At least with some of those revivals, we know exactly where the end point is. Sailor Moon's mid point is the Infinity Arc, and the end point is the Galaxia arc. After that, there's no more content, it's over. If Kimba The White Lion were to receive another adaptation, unless it was a side-story lik...

Re: The end of "Akira Toriyama canon"

Gohan would not have worked because he simply isn't as entertaining a character as Goku. Goku is a hopelessly innocent child trapped in a man's body, inspired by ancient Chinese folklore, who knows more about fighting techniques than he does counting to ten. He's endearing, he's iconic, but most im...
