Re: Weird Old Dub Stuff
Not DUBBING specific, but English-release censorship:
There's an episode of Dragon Ball where Goku, while riding Nimbus, almost gets hit by an airplane (it's an early episode, the one where the Red Ribbon Army blows up Pilaf's flying fortress and he gives a Dragon Ball to Silver)

Re: Torishima's Harsh Take on Akio Iyoku and DB Store
To use an analogy: If creators—writers, directors, animators, musicians, actors, et cetera—are the weird gay goth kids, Iyoku is the conservative, uptight cishet school principal. The best art comes from the former, not the latter.
Great analogy. The only tweak I'd make is that Iyoku tries to ...

Re: Torishima's Harsh Take on Akio Iyoku and DB Store
Broly is the most successful Dragon Ball movie ever and it's not even close.
To be fair, the bar for "most successful Dragon Ball movie" is pretty low and the only REAL contenders are Battle of Gods, Resurrection F, Broly and Super Hero. The other movies weren't given ACTUAL theatrical releases ...

Re: Torishima's Harsh Take on Akio Iyoku and DB Store
Dragon Ball is mostly just doing what it did in the 1980s and 1990s: a weekly anime and movies and video games were all tied together to sell various merchandise. Dragon Ball had as much creative ambition as the staff of the animated projects were allowed to have when juggling the production ...

Re: Did other anime/manga inspire Super Saiyan?
It's a "trope"(?) of East Asian storytelling, and rooted in a lot of religious/cultural texts that detail mythological/religious figures transforming for important battles and/or because they've achieved enlightenment/ascendancy.
Hell, it's a trope of STORYTELLING and human culture in general, as ...

I’m happy for fans who are satisfied with modern Dragon Ball but fans who aren’t happy just idk watch something else or just re-visit the portion of Dragon Ball you do enjoy?
Agreed. I generally enjoy the newer Dragon Ball iterations pretty well (Daima might be my least enjoyed post-Z anime thing ...

New immigration laws potentially classify Dragon Ball as pornography. In Texas, Dragon Ball has been removed from some stores (voluntarily) due to nudity.

Re: In order to continue DB's story in an authentic manner, Jump should create a Toriyama AI bot
It doesn't "help", it just interferes with the process that the professionals are already perfectly good at and familiar with. It's nothing but a pointless addition to a process that's already been figured out, it's only use is allowing higher up bastards to refuse the option to pay other humans ...

Re: Dragon Ball influences in other anime's scenes or other manga's panels
Attempting to actually compile/archive this would be a fool's errand, when individual instances are given homage/parody at such regular intervals, it's already impossible to keep up with:

Re: Torishima's Harsh Take on Akio Iyoku and DB Store
I think Akio is way too obsessed with nostalgia-pandering and fanservice, but I'd rather take that than the franchise collecting dust in Shueisha's custody
Not me. There are THOUSANDS of pages of manga, HUNDREDS of episodes, DOZENS of movies, and more than enough stuff that already exists to ...

Ideal, in a world where rights issues don't exist and profitability isn't a barrier:
Full 4K restorations done via actual archivists and restoration experts, not computer programs and AI.

Re: Torishima's Harsh Take on Akio Iyoku and DB Store
Whether Shueisha or Iyoku wind up being the ultimate winner of their ongoing dispute over Dragon Ball, the franchise is now SOLELY in the hands of people who treat it like a pinata to whack and get money out of, and look for things like "The most vertically marketable four-quadrant approach to ...

Re: Torishima's Harsh Take on Akio Iyoku and DB Store
Torishima is so fucking based.
HARD AGREE.
He's a grumpy old man with no filter and that's honestly refreshing especially coming from a culture where they're usually EXTREMELY overly polite and hesitant to criticize anything.
On top of that, everything I've ever personally seen from Iyoku has ...

Every year, I say: "What I would LIKE is a proper HD remaster of the show in the proper aspect ratio with all relevant versions of the soundtrack (ie: dub, dub score, original language, original score, etc) as a definitive release of the show onto physical media (blu ray or 4K)"
And every year it ...

Re: Unpopular DB opinions
I rewatched the Ocean dub Saiyan saga recently. While the translation and censorship are obviously not the best, the acting and even the Ocean score mostly hold up. To me, it's a cool alternative for the Japanese dub.
I understand it can't happen because of how heavily edited the episodes ...

Re: Help me choose what Dragon Ball to watch!
I'd watch whatever you WANT not what you feel like you "have to".
It's supposed to be fun and enjoyable, not an obligation. You don't have to conform to other people's opinions of what the "right" way to watch or be a fan is. If you want to watch the French dub, then do that, and enjoy your fandom.

Re: Would you be ok with SD-blurays?
I would be okay with them, if the video tracks were just Funimation's raws or colour corrected Dragon Box, like the Seed of Might releases.
It's such a shame that a franchise this big can only be properly experienced through a fan project.
Unfortunately not at all uncommon among Japanese ...
