Re: DB and Nostalgia

I have nostalgia for the OG dub actually, even though I can’t really enjoy watching it because the performances are usually mediocre.

I’m defining nostalgia, I suppose, as the experience of having vivid memories triggered by something, and remembering associated things from the same time.

Keep in mind that the first 3 shots come from 35mm film shots of the cels and not a direct cell scan.
Why is the first one 35mm instead of 16?

Re: The hills we choose to die on and the fights we battle for when it comes to Dragon Ball

My hill to die on: “Piracy” is the inevitable result of crappy and overpriced home releases and increased internet download speeds. It is a spontaneous thing, not a malicious one. Big corporations need to factor it into their business model instead of pretending there’s a way to make it go away. Als...

Re: Color Correcting the Dragon Box - 3 Part Spectacular

Ah, very nice. Though, that last one is a reminder that the cel colors were never intended to be the colors. They often used red lines which appear brown or black on film.

Re: Is it fair to say that Dragon Ball is no longer marketed to kids in North America?

It's plenty easy to make psychological judgments based off of the discussions we have on forums. It's why it's so frustrating for me, a queer gal, to post on a forum where people think the Ess-Jay-Dubyas are coming to ruin their shitty Japanese children's cartoon, where people think real experience...

Re: Is it fair to say that Dragon Ball is no longer marketed to kids in North America?

Yeah so at @Kunzait I disagree with your point of view almost down to the letter, and I’m not even that in to TV/media. I’m not much of a reader either, though I wish I were, so I’m not holding myself up on a pedestal or anything. Here’s what you are doing, from my perspective. Because of your appar...

Re: Color Correcting the Dragon Box - 3 Part Spectacular

Not sure about any digital cleanup. I don't think they'd bother with the effort it would take to do for hundreds or thousands of cels. I think that they just did a quick and clean high-res scan before returning them to whatever vault these cels are archived. Perhaps the cels are just in immaculate ...

Re: Is it fair to say that Dragon Ball is no longer marketed to kids in North America?

Once again, and I know I'm a broken record about this, but I think its long been beyond clear and fair to say that most of this forum as a broader collective has mostly ZERO clue how to engage with or judge a work that ISN'T made for children in any way, and most of this community simply doesn't fu...

Re: Color Correcting the Dragon Box - 3 Part Spectacular

Dang. The process of photography somehow adds a lot of depth to those otherwise flat looking cels. I got that seem feeling too. Maybe it's the background? The colors? Or maybe just that we aren't used to seeing these particular frames of animation in such clarity and quality that's throwing us off?...

I have no competence in this but I would have had Tokunaga write more music.

Re: "You're a Weeb"

Otaku as we use it in the west really ignores the content of its coinage so I always shirk when I see it used in the western fandom. The fundamental attribute of an Otaku--going by Saitou Tamaki's analysis--is the ability to orgasm to an anime character. To experience romantic attraction to them. I...

Yes and no. Some people ironically call themselves weebs. Others call dipshits 'weebs', too.
What is dipshit?

Re: Genuine surround sound in Japanese DBZ movie 13, the 10th anniversary movie, and the BLT dub of DB 1-13

Occam's razor dictates the simplest answer is often the truth, since it requires the fewest uncertain assumptions. In this case, I'd argue it's far simpler to assume they mixed Z basically everything from Z movie 3 onwards in stereo in case they want to use that music in stereo for any purpose in f...

Re: Genuine surround sound in Japanese DBZ movie 13, the 10th anniversary movie, and the BLT dub of DB 1-13

. Why would they "waste their time" mixing ANY of the music in stereo before Z movie 13? Especially as early as the first DB TV session, where they didn't know if the show would be a hit, and the first BGM releases were YEARS away. The first BGM release came out within two months of the first episo...
