Re: "Dragon Ball Super" FUNimation Dub Official Discussion Thread

Will anyone still even remember this meme when they rewatch this dub ten years from now?

Re: Episode #0448 (01 July 2018)

Pocket Monsters was never billed as a "promotional anime"; early advertisements for the show very specifically use the "TV Anime" tagline. (but also, I know it's popular to treat Pocket Monsters as "just" a 30 minute toy commercial but it really isn't any more merchandise driven than any Japanese c...

Re: "Nintendo Classic Mini Famicom Weekly Shonen Jump 50th Ann. Version"

Are the Famicom Dragon Ball games any good?

In any case, my hope is that this does well so that a Nintendo Classic Mini Super Famicom Weekly Shonen Jump 50th Anniversary Version eventually comes out.

It's also important to remember that Pocket Monsters XY&Z has a much higher budget than Super, is airing in prime time as opposed to Sunday mornings, and isn't being animated by a production studio that's as stretched thin as Toei is.

Re: Episode #0392 (06 December 2015)

I think the criticism people have against the dub's Cell theme, at least, is how it's literally just the same six notes repeated over and over and over and over and over and over and over again. It sounds like the backing track to a rap song and while some people may like that I think a lot of us ju...

Re: Episode #0392 (06 December 2015)

I love reading and listening to people talk about the background music to my favorite shows and so this episode was right up my alley. I'm also insanely jealous of you guys for being fans of a franchise that you can buy on DVD with whatever soundtrack you want ( cries at the state of the Pocket Mons...

Re: Episode #0390 (15 November 2015)

Didn't Super have a troubled production as well, given how little was revealed before the show came out? I remember plenty of people (myself included!) wondering if the show was actually going to make its July 5th debut given how the only real footage we had beforehand was a brief teaser trailer tha...

Re: Episode #0390 (15 November 2015)

People point to Crystal often, but that was a web series first. Pretty huge difference. Not really...? I don't see why Crystal debuting online first somehow makes it a more likely candidate for retakes than Dragon Ball Super is. A better example would be something like any random poor-looking One P...

Re: Episode #0390 (15 November 2015)

Yes, amazingly enough, brick-and-mortar DVD rental stores are still very much a thing here in Japan. There are theories as to why they still exist that range from "the old people in this country hate change" (a problem that affects many other things) to "the bigger chains have mafia ties that allow ...

Re: Super Episode 13 (04 October 2015)

They showed planets geting vaporized ,and stars going supernovas ,it wasn't only with the satan city and the kaioshin's relam. I'm talking more about reactions of people in other cities on Earth (Upa's village, Karin's Tower, West City, etc.), or reactions on planets like Namek. Showing a floating ...

Re: Super Episode 13 (04 October 2015)

The only thing I didn't really like about this episode (and the last one, really) was how the entire universe is supposed to be in this grave danger and yet they only ever showed us the reaction in Satan City and Kaioshin's realm. There's no sense of scale to this at all. I know that doing updated c...

Re: Anybody already stopped watching Super?

I think one thing to keep in mind is the fact that Super is the first time the overwhelming majority of American fans haven't been able to just binge watch the whole thing all in one go. Cartoon Network aired most of the series five days a week; we Americans just aren't used to waiting a full week i...

I am 100% convinced that Toei is going to pull a Sailor Moon Crystal on this and just rush the show on the air only to then go back later and fix it for the DVD / Blu-ray release.

Expect a ton of animation mistakes and fugly drawings, folks.

Semi-related: I assume the Dr. Slump The Movies DVD didn't sell all that well, given how there haven't been any more releases since then?

Re: Who (or what) is Mr. Popo?

The thing is, these "drawings on paper" stir up real emotions in real people. If you're not personally offended, then fine, but it's important to remember that there are people who are legitimately offended by this sort of thing who also aren't just being crybabies or thin skinned or whatever else p...

Re: Who (or what) is Mr. Popo?

Did you watch the Game Theory video on Jynx, specifically the part where there's a consistent focus on Jynx dancing? There's your evidence. No, that's just their take. Saying your fan theory with a confident voice doesn't suddenly make it 100% fact. Jynx could be based on Yama-uba, or Yuki-Onna, or...

But because her article didn't research Japanese culture at all I'm not sure why that should all be on her, though. "She should have done research until she's no longer offended by a cartoon character in blackface" sound like victim-blaming to me. And, again, where was this so-called research when ...

She does seem like the type of person to be very extremely offended by stuff. She's also a black woman who grew up in the South in the 1950s. I think she's absolutely entitled to feel the way she does. Westerners should take the time to understand foreign concepts And Japanese manga artists / video...
