Re: Akira Toriyama Passes Away.

Anime fans are gonna have a lot to talk about for a while.

RIP. It seems like he lived out his post-DBZ life very comfortably.

Re: OG Z vs Kai - Subtitled Version

Japanese Kai is definitely a bit of downgrade from Japanese Z but its still overall better than Funi Kai Although I wouldn't recommend Kai in any language. What exactly is bad about Kai? I remember reading the manga and thinking it was a bit too fast paced ( made a thread on it a long while ago ). ...

Re: Dragon Ball and the "It gets good in about 85% of the way!" mentality

The thing with original Dragon Ball is it does change quite a bit the first few episodes are in no way indicative of what the series actually ends up being. Torishima even directed Toriyama to change the genre because it wasn't selling as a road story. I would never tell someone "you got to si...

OG Z vs Kai - Subtitled Version

I've been thinking of biting the bullet and actually watching the entire Z saga animated. Most discussions I could find on OG Z vs Kai factors in the dub, which is fine, but I was planning to watch subtitled. Is Kai good? Or should I just watch the OG series and be liberal with my use of the fast fo...

Re: Your experience of watching Dragon Ball/Dragon Ball Z/ Dragon Ball GT Dragon boxes on CRT-tv?

I will when I feel like pulling my CRT TV out of the shed. I currently have a CRT PC in my room, which is much sharper than a CRT TV and wouldn't look much different from a modern monitor. How is the blue light level on a CRT computer screen? Less than a modern panel, though it might cause eye stra...

Re: Dragon Ball and the "It gets good in about 85% of the way!" mentality

Goku defeating Freeza had build up, at least by DB's brisk standards. As soon as Goku learns about Freeza's existence, he wants to fight him much to King Kai's displeasure. Freeza is responsible for the massacre against the Saiyans and is deathly afraid of them, building up to his defeat at the hand...

Re: Your experience of watching Dragon Ball/Dragon Ball Z/ Dragon Ball GT Dragon boxes on CRT-tv?

I own a CRT but I don't really see the benefits in watching Dragon Ball on it. Did you try? Won't it make pixel problems of dvds on a modern TV disappear? Not recently, no. I don't own the DBoxes. I guess I should left this thread alone but I see what you're getting at now. It would hide the pixels...

Re: Dragon Ball and the "It gets good in about 85% of the way!" mentality

Even when DB is in a slump in terms of writing (eg Goku vs Freeza) I still enjoy it because of Toriyama's artistic and panel composition skills. It's quick and punchy, in ways a lot of other battle shonen don't seem to be as consistent at. One Piece for example has solid panel composition up until t...

Re: Dragon Ball and the "It gets good in about 85% of the way!" mentality

I've heard of the one-fifth rule from MyAnimeList but I've never heard of the 85% rule. That only makes sense for like, a 12 episode anime and nothing more. Even the more conservative one-fifth rule is mainly geared towards shorter anime and not a long-running battle shonen. Most people get into tha...

Re: Is original Dragon Ball really that unpopular?

As a mentally ill One Piece fan, I'll give Kunzait the pass to mock OP fans /sarcasm People who say to watch a 100 episodes or so of OP to "see if you like it" feels like an attempt at tricking people into committing to OP via sunk cost fallacy or something. OP certainly gets better as it ...

Re: "Dragon Ball Super" Series Official Announcement & Discussion Thread

I'm not really hungry for more Dragon Ball content, but I do wanna see the anime only reaction to stuff like Moro, that's basically my skin in the game :V I'm not sure if the Dragon Ball Room feuds explain everything, like how was a movie able to come out? Especially one so distinct from the previou...

Re: Color Correcting the Dragon Box - 3 Part Spectacular

I'm not much of an anime expert, but reading the last few pages of this thread kinda reminds me of those arguments people have over retro video games and if they need to be on a CRT TV (or post-processing to make it look like a CRT) to look good. Like so: https://twitter.com/CRTpixels/status/1408451...

Re: "Dragon Ball Super (Manga)" Official Discussion Thread

Goku's reaction makes sense considering the amount of time in-universe he spent with Merus, doing the thing he loves most (fighting). The issue is that we the readers haven't really gotten to know Merus that well, and this is a series that usually gets the readers very well used to a character befor...

Re: "Dragon Ball Super (Manga)" Official Discussion Thread

I liked Merus' death but I admit that's largely due to how much I like the concept. With how utterly awful the divine hierarchy is, it's refreshing to see someone who wants to fix things. It could be done way better for sure and I hope the anime does the idea proper justice. It's interesting that Me...

Re: Unpopular DB opinions

As much as it blows that Gohan lost the protagonist role, the genki-dama in Buu's arc was a surprisingly cool and heartwarming way to end the fight. We get to see Vegeta put more effort into redeeming himself, a big pay-off to Mr. Satan billing himself as "humanity's champion" and we see a...

Re: How was FUNimation able to afford all that licensed band music back in the day?

One night I just watched the Broly movie and flipped the audio tracks back and forth. The sheer dissonance between the Japanese score and the American score is more funny to me than it should be. Anyway, yeah FUNi started out as a cheap dubbing company but by the time they were licensing metal music...

Re: Is the manga a little /too/ fast-paced?

Thinking on it more, I don't think the pacing pre-Raditz has any real serious issue. The brisk pacing works for something that was mostly a gag manga (though I've heard of the anime adding in filler that made the story feel more fleshed out). So I guess my contention was really with the "Z"...
