Re: DBZ Creative Products/Filipino Dub "Greatest Rivals" HQ

Glad to know the TV series is finally found. I remember that some short off-screen clips were uploaded on YouTube over a decade ago, but they were taken down by Toei immediately, and I've never seen or heard anything since then. IIRC, the narrator was female, but maybe it will turn out to be a fault...

I'm kind of impressed, that actually doesn't look half bad. Looks much more watchable than Funi's worst work, i'll give it that
The point here is that it doesn't have the ghosting caused by DNR that can be seen on the DBox.

Re: The All-Purpose Bardock & Goku Thread

Damn, that father-son Kamehameha. To me, honestly, this is the most disgusting thing recently happened to the DB franchise. The art itself alone may be acceptable at least (aside from the artistic flaws such as their inconsistent directions of eyes,) but I cannot stand Toyotaro's shallow-minded idea...

Re: State of the Dragon Ball/Dragon Ball Z Broadcast Audio?

Every episode of DB is covered by at least one Fuji TV capture (some include video, most are audio-only), which covers the full frequency range of the broadcasts in optimal quality, and many have alternate sources captured from other stations that had a 10KHz frequency cutoff. Every terrestrial ana...

Re: Kanzenshuu Thread of Dragon Ball-Adjacent Media & Influences

Though Toriyama is an extremely talented and very clever person, he is not kind of a person who is well-educated or knowledgeable, so I think it is a right choice to seek for the sources of his ideas mainly in pop culture, especially its contents available and hot in Japan at the time. The Wuxia thr...

Re: Are there any parts of the world where OG Dragon Ball is more popular than Z?

Though I can't think of any actual examples right now, if there're any regions that received only the original DB, that means it's practically more popular than Z there. When it comes to where both of them have been broadcast, from what I know, Z is always more dominant. In the case of receiving onl...

You forgot that the original Funimation DVD single release of DBZ movie 13, and Path To Power, used the high-quality magnetic tape audio.
I think it's optical Dolby Stereo audio mistakenly mixed to mono. These movies sound better than the others, but it's still optical soundtrack.

Optical Soundtrack (low quality): Japanese VHS release ... DB 1-3, DBZ 1-3 Japanese VHS re-release ... DB 1-3 Funimation's DVD/Blu-ray releases ... DB 1-3, DBZ 1-13, The Path to Power Magnetic Tape (high quality): Japanese VHS release ... DBZ 4-13 Japanese VHS re-release ... DBZ 1-3 Japanese Laser ...

Re: "You're a Weeb"

I can't fully deny Funi's marketing strategy, though. The DB franchise had failed multiple times in the US already, and considering how small the company was back then, they had to bet on the safest, most reasonable way to appeal to the American children at the time. Anime in general was not treated...

Re: "You're a Weeb"

Every time I see this sort of a discussion, I reacknowledge Funimation's sin of marketing the franchise as "badass hardcore cartoon DeeBeeZee." It seems to have worked well in a way, but it ended up badly distorting the nature of the series and made it recognized by a lot of people in a wrong way.

Re: Genuine surround sound in Japanese DBZ movie 13, the 10th anniversary movie, and the BLT dub of DB 1-13

That is quite a good result. Did you decode it with a method similar to mine, or did you use a hardware decoder of some sort? I used exactly the same method, but with the mixer option set to four channels. Also I used the lossy DBox audio because the JP Blu-ray release was still not available then....

Re: Genuine surround sound in Japanese DBZ movie 13, the 10th anniversary movie, and the BLT dub of DB 1-13

I've referred to the surround sound in these movies multiple times since years ago , but this fact is still not well known among the fanbase. I tried decoding the audio myself before to separate the rear channel by the same method and got a good result. So, brief history lesson: As far back as the ...

Re: Color Correcting the Dragon Box - 3 Part Spectacular

Here is an indepth guide on why the bars exist and how you were never really meant to see them. Also, if memory serves, we get closer to the intended display signal by cropping 18 pixels (9 on each side) and then resizing to a 4:3 ratio. Will you see a difference in 18 pixels and 16 pixels? Probabl...

I was born in Japan in the year that DBZ started airing, so... It was hard NOT to know it by living there. Wow, you're only a year older than me? For some reason I thought you had an extra year or two on me. The user name "Kei" was already registered by a different person, so I added "17" because I...

Re: Color Correcting the Dragon Box - 3 Part Spectacular

DVD follows the standards of the DV videotape format. It stores video footage in 720x480, which is shown on TV in 10:11 pixel aspect ratio. 704 out of 720 horizontal pixels are actually visualized, so the eight pixels on each side are redundant and not meant to be shown on TV. You can get proper 4:...

Re: The Dragonball Misinformation Thread.

Personally I don't see any problems with "SSJ." As a native Japanese speaker myself, I don't consider "Jin" as some sort of a grammatical suffix that should be omitted in abbreviations. Shueisha and Toei mainly use "SS," but it feels like a typical expression of the "Engish is cool" mindset among t...
