Other than calling it a plothole/mistake, the only thing I can think of is that there's some difference between how Goku was doing it and how Vegeta thought of it. Goku was firing off a beam on a curve then steeling himself to try to tank it, while Vegeta presumably would drop his power put his hand...

Gohan seeing through Hildy's phasing was a neat credit too. Like when Vegeta figures out Janemba's teleporting is a weakness in 12.

Basically, Vegeta doesn't care about Saiyan society or ranking except that where he was born means he should be the best. He doesn't declare himself King because it doesn't matter to him.

Goku was faster than light as a kid. That's why it took him as an adult a day to fly down Snake Way, and why everybody said it was impossible for him to get Roshi's glasses so fast.
