Re: Parts of Dragon Ball that you avoid showing to children as a parent or caretaker
...but there's no "extra r" there, the source word is spelled marron. There's two rs there to begin with. Yes, but the reason that Funi/Simmons call Maaron "Marron" is not because of the original French spelling. It's to represent the elongated vowel. They had already used "...

Re: A question to those who saw the Saban dub long after the fact
I happen to have already written up some of this for the wiki, so this may shed some light on the timing of Steve's work versus what dubbing was up to at the time: Iterations of "The Dragon Ball Z Anti-Censorship Petition" on toriyama.org in early 1999 went on to set the groundwork for fu...

Re: Episode #0454 (16 September 2018)
Just dropping in for a moment to say I listened to Jake's analysis, and he is spot on. Like to an eerie, hey-stay-out-of-my-head extent. After the whole series finishes airing, I'll try to go into it more, but there was another consideration for using "Top."

Re: Pun? or translation error?
These are English language dictionaries, by the way. And come on, you're already reading the subtitle track. Heaven forfend you actually crack open a dictionary and see what the word means. Oh, and just in case-- http://www.merriam-webster.com/dictionary/forfend https://www.collinsdictionary.com/us...

Re: Pun? or translation error?
I've defended Simmons in the past but this is ridiculous. NO ONE is going to get what that means, the purpose of a subtitle is to TRANSLATE. Its something even the most Yatsu Kisama Tachi would translate. There's not even a translation note to explain it. GOD. I know Translation Notes are verboten o...

Re: Steve Simmons and his DB franchise Subtitles.
I like Steve Simmons's subtitle work because he'll take culture into consideration of what he translates, i.e. honorifics. He also makes sure that the name puns are present or at least approximate the intention. I guess my only reservation would be the subtitle work on Plan to Eradicate the Super S...

Re: Why Mr. Steve Simmons left Japanese honorifics?
Some 30-40% of fansub groups out there keep Japanese honorifics out of their releases, and while the issue of honorifics was mostly ignored, neither fans nor translator (Mandelin) wanted the word "haki" untranslated in the Funimation One Piece subs, and there was a lot of loud protesting ...

Re: Why Mr. Steve Simmons left Japanese honorifics?
It seemed like a good idea at the time. That, and back then (perhaps even now), anyone who chooses to intentionally watch the Japanese track over the English one is presumed to be able to handle a more Japanesey flavor to the translation. As for "Kai," I was specifically asked to leave the...

For those who don't speak Spanish, that translates out to "You should have invited me, Goku." So I guess Rika Takahashi was right after all...? Go figure. It's really six of one, half-dozen of the other. The expression he's using, mizukusai , has the meaning of being aloof, distant, at ar...

Gash, I believe, is a pun on Sugar. It just doesn't lend itself to anagram-play in English very well.Gaffer Tape wrote: It's a pun on "Mustard." Just like Gash is Cashew, Zald is Salt, and Vinegar is... well... Vinegar.

Just to be a stinker, the next time they reboot the series, I'm translating them as "synthanoids."

Re: English subs for Japanese anime
Thought this thread might be handy to ask a little Daimao-related question: how many assistants/other translators were there for the DB stuff he did? I always see him credited as "Head Translator" on the DVDs, and was wondering if he had any help (which I imagine would be the case for a s...

Re: Why "ReaCoom"?!
That's basically it. "Rikuumu" doesn't make the transition into English as neatly as the others, because of that stretched-out "uu" in there (which is a vowel not voiced in the English "cream"). My thinking at the time was that rearranging the letters was fine, but in o...
