Re: Most underwhelming character death in the franchise?

Honestly, Piano. He had actually been a reasonably major character up to that point, but his death is such a blink-and-you'll-miss-it footnote I think I DID actually miss it the first time I read that chapter. Clearly just brushed aside because he had served his role and didn't need to be in the sto...

Re: Is InuYasha A Shojo Dragon Ball?

I've always considered Sailor Moon to be more of a Shojo Dragon Ball. It was Dragon Ball Z's sister series on Toonami. Oh My Goddess and Cutie Honey are the only other two action based shojos i can think of that were popular in the 90's. Oh My Goddess runs in a seinen magazine. It's not Shojo. Same...

Re: The All-Purpose "Translation Request" Thread

Huh, you're right, just checked myself too.

Was it in one of the trailers he said it? I know I have it from somewhere.

EDIT: Found it, it's in the movie digest. It's included on the Dragon Box, so if you have that you can see for yourselves. Sorry, my bad, my memory isn't what it used to be.

Re: Minority representation for minority characters in Voice acting

People that default hard to saying "African American" to the point they can't bring themselves to saying anything else always end up making themselves look like complete assclowns whenever they have to refer to a black person from some other country. Just saying. Non-Americans do NOT like being call...

Re: Minority representation for minority characters in Voice acting

https://www.cnn.com/2020/06/26/entertainment/simpsons-voices-trnd/index.html I know it's happening to quite a few shows. I feel this is an interesting topic in regards to anime and the lack of Asian voice actors for mostly Asian characters. Do you think this will change the anime, if not Dragon Bal...

Re: The Hills we die on.and the fights we battle for when it comes to Dragon Ball

The idea of Shonen being its own genre with its own tropes is and has always been 100% a total fabricated invention of much, much latter day fans of DB and similar-such anime & manga titles circa the turn of the millennium: particularly in Western territories outside of Japan and Southeast Asia. Th...

Re: Is it fair to say that Dragon Ball is no longer marketed to kids in North America?

An actual Seinen version of Death Note would likely be FAR more steeped in ethical complexity, and Light likely wouldn't be such a clear-cut, obvious sociopath right out the gate, and the reader would probably be asked MUCH more difficult and challenging moral questions every step of the way. Yep. ...

Re: SAY-IN - SPECIAL BEAM CAN-IN - SUN GOKU - DESTRUCTO DISK | Why does Dragon Ball STILL suffer with these shortcomings

No, because that thread, and you telling me it does, just makes it even more confusing that Ginyu, Cell, et al. are "humans". Though, in fairness, if your only source of this understanding you've reached is Wikipedia, I'd say your research is unreliable, and in addition, I'd argue that article is a...

Re: SAY-IN - SPECIAL BEAM CAN-IN - SUN GOKU - DESTRUCTO DISK | Why does Dragon Ball STILL suffer with these shortcomings

Again, I imagine the word was "Ningen", which I'm given to understand doesn't have the same "Sentient humanoid earthling"/homo sapien sapien meaning that it does in English. It does. https://ja.wikipedia.org/wiki/ヒト "Hito" (English: Human), Homo sapiens sapiens, is used in a broad sense to refer to...

Re: SAY-IN - SPECIAL BEAM CAN-IN - SUN GOKU - DESTRUCTO DISK | Why does Dragon Ball STILL suffer with these shortcomings

That's the issue. It's *too* literal. If you have to break the term down into its most literal parts to translate it, then there might be a problem. Also, ningen doesn't necessarily have to translate into "human" specifically, which is the reason why so many different types of characters are called...

Re: SAY-IN - SPECIAL BEAM CAN-IN - SUN GOKU - DESTRUCTO DISK | Why does Dragon Ball STILL suffer with these shortcomings

So how would one accurately translate that? Would if it have to be separate labels in English? So like, #17 and #18 would be called "Cyborgs", #16 would be an Android, and Cell an "Artificial Life form"? That's the million dollar question, innit? tbh I don't think there's any real good answer to it...

Re: SAY-IN - SPECIAL BEAM CAN-IN - SUN GOKU - DESTRUCTO DISK | Why does Dragon Ball STILL suffer with these shortcomings

Oh, also Btw, is it "Nah(ar)-mek" or "Naw-mek"? I tried doing research but it was very confusing, still confused on how to put emphasis on the "mek". It's "Namekku", a pun on "namekuji" (slug). All the constant mispronunciations in English are largely a result of the decision to spell it "Namek" rat...

There's nothing to really learn from the original Star Wars trilogy since we've seen that story before.

A jinzouningen is all those things. Robot, android, cyborg, creatures grown in labs, etc. No, it's not simply a blanket term. As I said, it's a bit fuzzy. Quoting the article: "Jinzoningen" is a general term for machines and artificial life forms made to resemble humans, such as humanoid robots. (....

Re: SAY-IN - SPECIAL BEAM CAN-IN - SUN GOKU - DESTRUCTO DISK | Why does Dragon Ball STILL suffer with these shortcomings

Regarding the entire "what is a jinzoningen" thing, the various terms are kinda fuzzy in Japan too. I'm looking at the wikipedia article for the jinzoningen term, and it mentions that the TV show Jinzoningen Kikaider, which is apparently officially titled "Android Kikaider" in English, features a Dr...

Re: Dragon Ball Rewatch, Week 17 - DB episodes 76-80 (CURRENT WEEK)

What I questioned is if ten could actually be an approximation of tian (I didn't think it was, but I don't know enough to say), and whether Mandelin made an error. Yes, "ten" is how you'd approximate the mandarin "tian" pronunciation of 天 in Japanese. You can see here how Shi Tianlong's name is app...

There's one right there in the tweets you were linked. https://pbs.twimg.com/media/EA3LO4wVAAAZ7JL.jpg It's worth mentioning that Goku DOES say "Kaioken times 100" in this scene in the anime comic, so it's not some crazy fake trying to convi...

Pretty sure the Kanzenshuu labels are just based on the Dragon Box booklets.
Not entirely. The Dragon Book has episode 14-18 as the "Kame Sennin Training Arc", a separation I don't think I've ever seen anywhere else. Toei is not super consistent on how they divide the series into arcs.

Re: Are There Any Updates On The Harmony Gold Dub Of Dragon Ball?

Granted that's not a totally 1 to 1 perfect example, as there's certainly a bit of a cultural disparity between U.S. and Japanese media: obviously in Japan there's WAY more of a market even among adults for things like gashapon knick knacks and whatnot than there is here in the US. But even that so...
