Re: "Dragon Ball Super (Manga)" Official Discussion Thread

Anticipating (and, to be honest, hoping) that if Freeza has a role this arc--which seems all but guaranteed by the dialogue in these pages and Granolah's motivations--it will be another reluctant team-up. The likelihood of Broly appearing also seems quite high, and I'm excited to see both or either ...

Re: Regarding the anime’s “return”

It'll return a few years down the line as DBS: Brotherhoodystal Kai, and sort of half-heartedly re-adapt the previously animated arcs from the manga before moving onto new content. People will be lukewarm on it.

Re: The Super Re-Read

In the meantime, I'll hope it's just a bump in the road and not the start of some inevitable decline. After all, the zenith of the original manga (Boo) comes right after its own nadir (Cell) as I see it. As can be said for artists of any profession, perhaps our greatest achievements are only made p...

As matter of fact, do people even realize how much dumb shit Piccolo said and did in the more arc?

Re: MistareFusion's Dragon Ball Dissection! (Updated 12/31/20!)

Well, in my case, the fact that the villain isn't the focus - and, frankly, feels shoehorned in for the sake of having a villain - is a great argument for this film not needing a Big Bad at all. If the dragon ball hunt and the village conflict had been fleshed out a little more - maybe given an ove...

Re: Thoughts on Moro's character?

Cell completely lives and dies on Norio Wakamoto's voice, so I don't doubt that this could be the case. On the page, though, I wish he were a little more charismatic than Cell, as I'd wish for all DB villains. (Moro may already be more charismatic than Cell, on that note.) What do you have in mind ...

Re: Goten or Tien? Who was more mistreated in Super?

Tien by far, as this is someone who went from being Goku's previous rival and relevant main character to just being in the background. All of DB post 23rd Tenkaichi Budokai has got to be a tough read waiting for Tenshinhan to pick his rival role back up. Add to that the fact that both Toei and Toyo...

Re: "Dragon Ball Super (Manga)" Official Discussion Thread

Mmm IDK, it seemed like the warfare was finally over, people were studying, working, getting normal lives, neglecting their training, definitely not the world you'd expect Freeza to be around and possibly come back for more. Well Freeza is gonna be busy raising his son too :P And hiring Vegeta for ...

Re: Which other story would you like to see re-imagined by Toriyama?

None. It’s moderately disrespectful to the original creators, work for hire though their characters and concepts may have been, and while I do like the Broly we got, that’s a thought in the back of my mind I don’t need and wouldn’t have were Toriyama just to churn out unexpected antagonists and alli...

Re: MistareFusion's Dragon Ball Dissection! (Updated 12/31/20!)

I really have to disagree that the film would have been better off without Broly. His known menace and presence is precisely one of the things that makes it work, as we understand the tension of Videl (to our unease) and later Goten and Trunks (to our unease but also in a comical sense) not knowing ...

Re: Goten or Tien? Who was more mistreated in Super?

Tenshinhan is inarguably a more relevant character than Goten in both versions of Super, which is a bit weird.

Re: MistareFusion's Dragon Ball Dissection! (Updated 12/31/20!)

Oh. We completely agreed on Movie 10. It's one of my favorites. It looks gorgeous (in all three of artwork/design, animation, and coreography/staging), the character interactions are fun (you highlighted how well the Goten/Trunks/Broly dynamic works), we get surprises like Videl fighting the main vi...

Re: MistareFusion's Dragon Ball Dissection! (Updated 12/25/20!)

Ultimately, I feel that this entire sequence fails because it simply has no idea what it wants to be, so what it is tends to drift all over the place. There's no consistent throughline with any of these actions. And I really think Toriyama shoots the whole thing in the foot by having Vegeta admits ...

Re: How many of Toriyama's other works take place in the Dragon World?

It's fun to draw connections, especially with the number of character-design cameos between various works, but the most honest answer I can give is: only Jaco , with explicit, seamless continuity, and Neko Majin and Dr. Slump with somewhat hazier/more dubious continuity. Even the Katsura/Toriyama Ga...

Re: Thoughts on Moro's character?

He has a strong presence, a unique design, and cool abilities. He effectively drove the story and challenged Goku & co. If the Moro arc is animated, he'll have a cool voice, and I bet he'll be popular. Cell completely lives and dies on Norio Wakamoto's voice, so I don't doubt that this could be the...

Re: Was Goku using stealth omen to one shot Ten and Kuririns moro arc opponents?

Technically, the scraps do still appear as part of Goku's Omen aura in Chapters 55 and 63, presumably because his clothing is shredded in a similar fashion to the Tournament of Power in each instance. Tiny rocks take their place in Chapters 58-60, while his clothing is still intact (or else they're...

Re: Was Goku using stealth omen to one shot Ten and Kuririns moro arc opponents?

*snip* I hate to burst a well thought-out bubble, but as far as intentionality... Those white “sparks” around Goku are supposed to be scraps of clothing, which is why they’re always accompanied by dark ones (his undershirt). His outfit becomes noticeably more tattered even with his first activation...

Re: Thoughts on Moro's character?

I don't think this necessarily undercuts the idea of there being a deliberately structured culmination drawing from Dragon Ball so far per se , any more than the 23rd Budokai's similar (less structurally essential, but more overtly presented) sense of culmination based on the whole series to date w...

Re: Thoughts on Moro's character?

I suppose that, more than anything, I have a hard time seeing what exactly would be accomplished by that kind of deliberate calling back. I don't feel Goku, Vegeta or Merus' arcs in the storyline depend on it, and those three are its sentimental core. And I do think Toyotaro is deliberate enough wit...
