Re: What would have happened if the Harmony Gold run was actually successful?

If successful, they'd put up a bunch of legal mumbo-jumbo that would've kept the Z movies, GT, Super and the later movies from reaching American shores. Y'all know what I'm talking about.

Re: Does English Dragon Ball need higher profile actors?

Compare the YYH dub to the recent Funimation dubs and you can tell that it's pretty dated. I still believe that it's only really liked to this day because they grew up with it and to them, it sounded slightly better than the DBZ dub. A lot of older dubs haven't aged as well. When I picked up vol. 1...

Re: Does English Dragon Ball need higher profile actors?

The YYH dub takes a number of liberties with the dialogue, but it seems to generally be held in good regard. I have seen some people who have said that they actually prefer the dub, on the count of how much more colorful the dialogue is. Oh yeah. The announcer girl not wanting to die a virgin was t...

Re: Does English Dragon Ball need higher profile actors?

Didn't like her in "Fairy Tail" or as the narrator in "My Bride is a Mermaid"? Thought she was fine there. I've never heard of either. My Bride is a Mermaid (Seto no Hatoyome in Japanese) is a comedy anime where a boy is saved by a mermaid, thus violating Mermaid Law, so he needs to marry her or he...

Re: Does English Dragon Ball need higher profile actors?

Doesn't she still voice Baba? Yes. She's awful in any role I've seen Didn't like her in "Fairy Tail" or as the narrator in "My Bride is a Mermaid"? Thought she was fine there. Do find it funny folks keep making references to Rita Repulsa as at one point I could see Ms. Goodson doing Frieza as a sli...

Re: Does English Dragon Ball need higher profile actors?

Nah. If the Ghibli english dubs prove anything, it's that successful actors talents do not always translate into voice acting. It is a different beast altogether. With the exception of Spirited Away, most of the Ghibli Dubs are mediocre. Not to get too off-topic, but what makes you think so? Spirit...

Re: Does English Dragon Ball need higher profile actors?

Matthew Lawrence was in the US adaptation of the original Gridman called Superhuman Samurai Syber Squad . That's where the SSSS in the title of the recent anime comes from. I was saying on how I heard some folks wanted him in the dub of SSSS Gridman because of that. Here's the intro: https://www.you...

Re: Does English Dragon Ball need higher profile actors?

The only recent bit of folks wanting higher profile actors in anime for was some guys wanted Boy Meets World's Matthew Lawrence to be in the dub of SSSS Gridman. That was mainly due to reference the original's adaptation, but of course, didn't happen.

Re: Why did Mandelin not translate Mazoku?

Sometimes translators leave some terms as is rather than translate them or do differently than others. For example, in the series Sekirei , the characters will say certain phrases when using their powers. In Japanese they're called "norito" and what Yen Press kept in the English manga, but Funimatio...

Re: Does English Dragon Ball need higher profile actors?

It's also kind of a controversy with getting big name celebrities as some folks look at it like you have to be a big name before getting into voice acting. Not talking about character actors like Clancy Brown, Phil Lamarr and Hellboy (forget the actor's name at the moment, but will probably come bac...

Re: Most accurate Viz release of the manga?

I'd say the single volumes. DB's VizBigs did fix a few things I think, but had changes, and Rurouni Kenshin's VizBigs were better as they fixed typos, and had cool extras at the end talking about things going on during the Meiji Era, and the last one had that prologue and all the color. Just didn't ...

I'd say turn your anime senses off before watching. Can be more enjoyable that way.

Re: Who composed Rock the Dragon?

It’s definitely not far fetched to assume that Saban was probably pretty finicky about censorship and promoting positive morals for kids. I mean, Power Rangers has always insisted on using the word “destroy” instead of “kill” or “die”, no matter how awkward the former sounds, and MMPR in particular...

Re: Kakarot vs Kakarotto - The Vegerot/Vegetto(ito) effect

Kinda related, but with the One Piece manga translation, Viz had one king bull's name as "Sodomu" while Funimation in the dub had his name as "Sodom". (Didn't watch the episodes subbed, so don't know which version the subs went with). Extra "u" or not, the pun was the same with his brother Gomorrah,...

Re: DB could work as Cartoon Series?

Remembering this topic, looked up some things and beside the really more popular stuff like Voltron and Speed Racer, seems they recently made a new Superbook series that's western instead of Japanese. Went the CG route which can't really see with DB. For those not familiar, here's the Japanese intro...

Re: Dr Slump and original Dragon Ball in top 10 list for most wanted reboot shows

7 - St Seiya Already happened , though I need to watch past the second episode and see girl Andromeda Shun. Yes, and not to mention the '97 Slump remake series is lesser known when compared the original '81-'86 anime. I've heard it didn't do that well in ratings. That's how it is especially when th...

Re: What would a reboot have to do in order to comply to today's standards?

While I don't care about a reboot, part of me was wondering with General Blue, and while Japan doesn't have an issue, was wondering can they show gay bad guys in US kids' cartoons these days? I don't really watch much kids' cartoons these days, so wasn't sure if they could show gay characters as bad...

Re: Minority representation for minority characters in Voice acting

A big reason non-LGBT actors get awards for playing LGBT characters is because there's a bias in Hollywood awards to give them to showier roles. You can substitute "Most" for "Best" and you have the biggest criterion for how performances are judged. Was going to also say voice wise if Funimation st...

Re: Minority representation for minority characters in Voice acting

For the most part, voice actors should just play the role they fit the most with. This is how cisgender people wind up play trans characters, telling our stories and getting accolades--while presenting as their own gender--and being seen and associated with roles. Your view on the subject has to be...

By the way, what’s the stance on men voicing women?
If it works. And I'm not just talking about crossdressers. Ed Asner as Granny Goodness was pretty good casting.
