Re: The Path to Piccolo's Redemption

The question for me has always been how much of his own man Piccolo Jr. is- and his ceding his tournament loss to Goku and the resulting detente has never struck me as something old King Piccolo would have settled for. And in that case, if Piccolo isn't a 1:1 of his daddy, then suddenly we have a ch...

"Wait, you're telling me I can watch the entirety of Japanese Dragon Ball Super tv show and read the manga, in my language, the day it hits shelves in Japan... for free? With the very real possibility that I my get my fill and not actually purchase the product afterward?" With the caveat that I am h...

Re: Can we talk about the Funimation Movie Soundtracks?

I need to give the dubs with the licensed music another listen, but I recall thinking they didn't fit with Dragon Balls bright and round aesthetic, even if some of the movies that used them were in very dim battlefields! I do like some of Mark Menza's tunes for the later movies, Gogeta's theme, the ...

Re: Dragon Ball Z: Budokai 3 Competitive Tier List

I do appreciate Budokai breakdowns, as I always found the games so stiff (until Shin Budokai, at least) and all the characters being built from a handful of skeletons so obvious that I couldn't find meaningful ways to compare them.

Re: Anyone else think BT2 had one of the worst story modes of any of these games?

There is something to be said for Tenkaichi 2's being "thorough to a fault", the few characters it was lacking aside. In glut of of endless Dragon Ball games that is a small honor to take. T3's looks a lot smaller at first, but all the optional scene transitions packed into each fight make them long...

As one who somehow finds little fun Mario Kart and much prefers Diddy Kong Racing's priorities, I appreciate that analogy. Bojack's an enjoyable movie, but it's always been top of the middle at best to me. You have the very novel first act, great artwork all around, and some of the widest use...

Re: Dragon Ball Rewatch, Week 18 - DB movie 2 (CURRENT WEEK)

Oh good timing, I finally got around to this and Path to Power last week. Goku and Krillin were great start to finish, the movie communicates a lot with a little and all the jokes at Krillin's expense in particular land squarely. You think the cut to Krillin on the buffalo is going to be a reprieve ...

Re: Who could Frieza's buyers be?

Probably wealthy but weak, or at least not superhuman, aliens that use him to get what they want. We just don't need to see any of them since its just a motive for the pirates and mercenaries our characters are actually fighting. It does strike me as a deliberately dark notion whenever I see that ma...

Re: So, did DBZ Movie 14, and everything after scratched your DB itch?

The notion of an "itch" really has two different meanings; what you want in a Dragon Ball follow up from as a story, and the feelings and experiences that that brings, to go with however you remember experiencing the original stuff at the time. For the latter, having brand new Dragon Ball material t...

I had become so accustomed to DBD's well-deserved absence after December that I double-taked when I saw the upload alert! Is there one thing that made it so clear to you that Dragon Ball's "civilian" side had changed so much? The breakdown on how out of place a secret-identity bearing super he...

Is that Cooler's Revenge cover art a Toei illustration or a Funimation pan? I forgot how nice it looked.

Mike, we don't pay you, we marvel at you. Granted, now you have given us even more to marvel at. The level of detail some of these guides are going for is something I would never had expected. But it makes a lot more sense in light of having so many new er (in the scope 20 years, of course!) contrib...

Re: Is it possible to improve the image of Dragon Box?

The Amazon Video Japan presentation of the movies just makes me sad now, because when they were coming out it looked like the movies had finally gotten "their due"- some of them at least. Then the blu-rays hit and they're a more benign version of what Funi's doing.

Re: Was the Level remastering REALLY too expensive, though? Almost certainly not.

I do not recall FUNi explicitly mentioning cost as a barrier to the Level sets, and when asked point blank in the Kanzenshuu user questions segment (where would I find that? I've found it again before but don't know what category is falls under) the respondent again said it was a number of things. T...

Re: All in all, are you happy the revival happened?

I was and firmly am in the mindset that Dragon Ball ended in 1995~6 and the all subsequent material is just extra, so that really dampens any desire of mine to get too flustered about anything. The social element of taking in new Dragon Ball material at the same time the world over is probably the b...

Re: So.. About Frieza training for four months.

Trying to calculate the rate of Freeza's strength gains to the day assumes his species grows at a comically absurd rate like the Saiyans do, as if Freeza was running himself ragged then chowing on senzu beans the way Goku was on the way to Namek. And that is probably true to a point, what with his h...

Re: Did Dragon Ball sleep on utilizing an angry Goku?

Whenever I ponder this, I always conclude that I don't want Goku to be angrier, I just want to know he's invested in how high stakes the Piccolo-on fights are. But funny enough, adult Goku's usual attitude is the better one to have in those situations. If you're going to paralyze Nappa for making a ...

Re: Did Dragon Ball Get Lucky?-The Good Faith Version.

It is easy to downplay a lot of its success if you downplay what can pass as popular in Dragon Ball's pop culture sphere. Say "It's Jump success doesn't matter because a lot of Jump mega hits are puerile " or "Sure it has a long cultural tail, so do Transformers and Pokemon ". It was part of a genre...

Re: Do the DBZ Season Set Blu-rays use the original broadcast audio?

I'm not finding any of the old comparison shots at a glance either. So do we think Toei assigned the movie transfers to different people across the two versions? You would think it would be easier for them to be consistent, it would be a shame if the best version really was stream only, if only for ...

Re: Do the DBZ Season Set Blu-rays use the original broadcast audio?

Funi's HD releases of the Z movies, while worthy of critcism, remain about the same quality as the Blu-rays available in Japan, but have been available several years longer, etc. etc. etc. so clearly they don't care about a release being superior). You think so? I know the transfer quality changed ...
