Re: Dragon Ball Daima trailer, October release date announced

Wasn't expecting for a sub forum to be created, it feels so weird now XD, but here we are, 1 year later after the announcement, a long time and I can't believe that I'm still not prepared for this moment, I'm so excited and I'm sure the chances of me loving it are high, but I'm also so scared of failing. At this point there's pretty much no doubts that this takes place right after Boo Saga, so I can forget my wish for this story to make progress in the continuity and continue from where Super stopped, all we can do now is enjoy it and expect the little chance of this story to have any impact in the future.

Other than that, I don't think I have any other worries, aside from one, I really hope that this story will be very original, I don't mind if they reuse concepts from Boo Saga and try to explore them further, that would be really good actually, but my fear is that the show will once again try to give a lot of fanservice and focus on empty nostalgia with a bunch of rehashed ideas, that was the biggest problem with Super and the revival era of the franchise in general in my opinion, I think Battle of Gods making a lot of references to previous sagas was good because it was the revival of the franchise, so making that movie into something like a "celebration" really worked for me, and it still had its original characters and concepts after all.

Now stuff like Resurrection 'F' being Freeza Saga 2.0, The Final act of Super Hero being Cell Saga 2.0, the return of Mirai Trunks, etc, it wasn't very good for me, the first parts of Super Hero, the original stories, with original concepts and characters were the best part of Super for me, only DBS Broly used nostalgia and fanservice in a good way in my opinion.

I hope Daima will take the different path and try to be original just like how the Super manga exclusive sagas and its two Tournament Sagas tried to be (though U7 vs U6 and ToP had a lot of fanservice too, mostly in the anime, but I'm talking about the entire story or a part of it, I don't mind a few scenes doing it) no Boo Saga 2.0 please, though, it would make sense for Daima to do a lot of callbacks to the previous sagas now that it's going to be Toriyama's final work, so, I'm pretty confused here, I don't know XD I just hope this show will be memorable enough to honor Toriyama's journey and legacy, with all of his potential and care put into it.

Just a few hours left, let's sit and wait : )

Re: Dragon Ball Daima trailer, October release date announced

I guess this is it then. After six years, a new series is at hand. Going off by the trailers, animation looks good, not that I care about it, but it's always a plus to have a good-looking series. Hopefully all we are in for is some great adventures and overall good time exploring unknown parts of the Demon Realm that wasn't possible for Dragon Ball Heroes to delve into.

Given Dragon Ball history, I'm not really expecting great lore and information, but it will put a smile on my face if we can get that. Like finally confirming that Dabura was a Makaio or a Makaioshin (and that he may have a sister out there...!). Hell, just hearing characters uttering one of those words would be cool, fifteen years after it was first spoken in an interview. It is another chance to explain to the viewer why Zamasu wasn't considered a Makaio (without actually mentioning him if it takes place before Dragon Ball Super, of course). Also, just give me somehing that confirms when this occurs, not "sometime later" ambiguous nonsense. Give me something solid that I can work with.

I can't wait to check it out. May Toriyama left us with a project from the deepest bottom of his heart. And happy anniversary, Dragon Ball!

Amazing. They retconned a retcon, making it pointless. And now it can't even be in the same canon as Super, where Vegetto defuses in both versions.
You gotta love this franchise. We could have gotten crazy things like chibi UI but here we are.

Since ADN also offers Dragon Ball Super with German subtitles (https://animationdigitalnetwork.com/de/ ... ball-super), ADN also came to my mind as a candidate for a German-language Daima release when Crunchyroll excluded Europe in their announcement. I wonder if we'll hear such an announcement soon...

No simuldubs?
I don't think we'll be getting simuldubs unfortunately.

As far as I know no dubs have been confirmed other than English as US screenings will be dubbed, but that will be a month after Daima's Fuji TV debut so I guess Crunchyroll's dub is slightly behind.

Hard to say where the progress is at with other dubs unless someone speaks out about them being in production, although I'd assume they are and NDAs are in place.

My money would be on Clinkenbeard voicing Goku, as she's been Goku's kid voice since 2010 but, as I already said, the characters in Daima are more chibified than actually de-aged which COULD be (which again I can't stress enough is pure speculation) Crunchyroll's rationale in just using Schemmel as Chibi Goku in Daima.

And it's not like Crunchymation hasn't had adult men voice kid characters: https://youtu.be/-HtCmGhd6EQ?si=eGXlU39y9lwccSTn
Hasn't it been said that the characters are de-aged, not chibified? I mean, others got de-aged to babies.
And for that clip, I forgot they did that in Super: Broly. I'll bring up that it's a small flashback at the beginning of the movie, so they probably just figured it didn't matter to use other VAs, but you got me there. That's not how they usually have kids voiced in DB, though.
MasenkoHA wrote: Fri Sep 13, 2024 5:12 am I can't even begin to follow the logic in that. "It can't be Schemmel because there's a completely unverified rumor that it's Nadolny." Like...okay?
The logic is, "If there's rumors that they're considering Nadolny, then they're looking to use a female VA for Goku." Even if the rumor that they wanna bring Nadolny back is a load of bunk, I'd still expect them to use a different female VA, like Clinkenbeard.
MasenkoHA wrote: Fri Sep 13, 2024 5:12 am The key difference between Drummond and Nadolny is Drummond can act and Nadolny really cannot act. She does okay with Goku the simpleton and Goku the warrior but when she's called to task to show any sort of emotion like anger or grief her shortcomings as an actor become super apparent. One of the many big failings of the Funi dub of the Daimao arc is just how terrible her performance was since that arc required actual emotions from Goku.
I haven't seen the dub of that arc in a while, though I plan to rewatch the OG DB anime in the near future because I'm overdue for it. However, I think she did a good job in the GT dub when needed & the redubbed scenes in the Z dub were a huge improvement for her. At least with the lines & direction given to her. Let's remember that early FUNimation dubs were plagued with bad script changes, additions, & directions that are now looked back on as extremely cringe, leading to bad performances, not helped by the fact that a lot of the VAs who're now staples at the company were new to the game.
Now, I'm not saying she's 100% perfect at acting. As I said, I think her performances could stand to be a LOT better. I think if she could learn to be more natural with her performance & reel it in, she's be a great dub voice for kid Goku. Not so much Gohan, but maybe, but at least Goku.

True. Not counting video games (which I hardly keep up with) she really only had Curse of the Blood Rubies to strut herself as Goku and she did fine. Most of the criticisms are pretty silly and amount to #NotMyKidGoku. I don't care that she uses the same voice for Goku that she uses for Goku Knockoff in One Piece any more than I care that Tara Strong only has like 4 different voices for her 5000 characters.
From how I've seen it, her Goku has evolved over the years. She's made it similar to her Luffy. The main difference is that Luffy is more stuffy & played to be just staright-up dumb (which, tbh, isn't how the voice is meant to come off, given how Mayumi Tanaka usually plays him, but whatever). It's not a carbon copy of her Gohan, just not as soft-spoken. I just get distracted by her voices because I got WAY into the English dub of One Piece, like I said, & I don't know why, but my brain can't get passed that.
Tara Strong's boy voices are at least able to be different through how deep she makes them. Timmy Turner is different from Ben 10 (even in the episode of Ben 10 where Ben gets de-aged to 5 & she had to pitch up the voice to near-Timmy Turner levels, but there's still a distinction to it) & they both sound different from Mac's older brother Terrence from Foster's. Though, hers are also voices I don't mind hearing in anything other than 1 thing. Also gonna say thing, Tara Strong's a more versatile actress than Clinkenbeard, especially the boy voices. Probably due to more experience & finding ways to change it up over the years, but she is.
gokaiblue wrote: Fri Sep 13, 2024 1:55 pm There's definitely a part of me that kinda believes the Nadonly news to be true, but on the other hand, Kid Gokū is being featured prominently in a video game through GT, and that still has him being voiced by Clinkenbeard. I would think they would want more brand synergy between the two tbh.
I mean, these are 2 different products made on 2 different production timelines. Anime can be dubbed pretty up to the wire when it needs to be broadcast. Like, Yoruichi from Bleach had been recast in the Thousand-Year Blood War anime's dub initially, but then Viz switched back to Wendee Lee after a single episode with the other actress aired & replaced her voice line with Lee's on future releases (TBH, I don't know why they recast the character who already had a definitive voice in the first place, but ok), but if we compare that to a video game, Square Enix replaced Olaf's Japanese voice lines in Kingdom Hearts 3 after his OG VA got into controversy & that was in an update to the Japanese version after the game released. Video games need more time so the devs can properly program the voice lines to come in when needed. I imagine they recorded a lot of people some time last year or way earlier this year for the English dub while Daima's dub started being recorded more recently in the last few months or so.

The question is if he finished any. Perhaps he finished some full projects, perhaps some were already almost done and Shueisha/Toei will fill in the blanks, or perhaps they will just be picking up scraps.
It's kind of weird to think of it like that, since projects in the revival era (sans Jaco) were never even his to "finish" in the first place. But yeah, I suppose maybe there are some projects he helped come up with the premise and outline for but had yet to draw character designs, or perhaps drew character designs but didn't come up with names, etc. We'll never really know, and as a result it'll be easier than ever for them to continue presenting things as being "by Toriyama" in some way for as long as they want, whether it's misleading to describe it like that or not.

Re: Dragon Ball Daima trailer, October release date announced

The promotional material was a bit misleading regarding the power levels. In the first trailers, we saw Goku not using Ki and performing many actions with the pole stick. That's why some people initially thought we would see little to no transformations in the first part of Daima. However, the latest trailer gives a completely different picture. If we're already seeing SSJ1 and SSJ2, I don't expect them to save those transformations for the second part of the series. Still a high chance we might see some special unique transformation (something to with the magic of the Demon Realm?) at the end. Goku and Supreme Kai's opponents in the Demon Realm will likely become stronger quickly. So, I expect that the pole stick will only be used in the first episode(s), with power blasts and transformations following soon after.

Logically, the story might take place right after the Buu arc, but we don't know for sure as there is no official confirmation yet. There's talk of SSJ3 Vegeta (which might present a continuity issue?), and there's also speculation about the defusion of Kibito and Old Kai. Even then, there could be a twist: Kibito could revert to his original form once the spell is undone, and Vegeta might decide not to use SSJ3 anymore because that form is less efficient for him than SSJ2. Whatever happens, they'll find a way to make it fit or simply retcon. But at this point, it's difficult for us to continue speculating without confirmed details. They might also keep us in the dark for a while and then introduce the God forms as a 'surprise.'

I think this trailer gives the best idea of what the animation will look like. It's exactly what Super should have been. The combat is very fluid, with many frames. A lot of work has gone into this, and I suspect that given the long production time, the quality will remain consistent until the end. The 3D animation of Super Hero couldn't convince me that it was the future of Dragon Ball—this is what Dragon Ball should always look like.

There's been speculation that this show takes place before Battle of Gods, hence no Beerus or god transformations in the promotional material. Obviously that's speculation but that would make sense to me. So if you're not a fan of Super Saiyan Blue then this show's for you.

- Still don't know who is the composer. Would love to see Naoki Sato outside of the Super Hero genre. If not him, then someone else other than Sumitomo. He already had Super. Daima composer should be someone else.
There is something I would like to add that I mentioned in this thread earlier: how the international distribution of DB Daima outside Japan will be handled. It might get simulcasted like how Crunchyroll and Daisuki simulcasted DB Super with English subs back in 2015 before Funimation dubbed the series into English in 2017. And since Crunchyroll now has the DB license in North America thanks to the merger with Funimation two years ago, they might do a simuldub of DB Daima (or maybe not, I think).

If I remember rightly, there's a brief shot in the very first trailer of an old Namekian's eye. Could that be Kami, perhaps shortly before reverting to mini form? If Shin and Kibito defuse, it's not outside the realm of possibility that the wish defused Piccolo too. Although he doesn't seem to be part of Goku's main entourage this time, Piccolo is pretty prominent in the marketing (which, granted, is par for the course for any project). His connection to Kami was a key plot point in Super Hero, and in the Super manga, Vegeta mockingly threatened to use his Forced Spirit Fission technique to release Kami and Nail. It's far from a forgotten detail.

I like the idea that while Goku, Shin and these colourful new weirdos are traversing the Demon Realm to find a way to reverse the spell, Piccolo has his own subplot dealing with the dilemma of losing Kami and Nail. There'd be so much to explore there: would Piccolo feel happy that he's finally free to carve his own path without being tied down by his duality with Kami, or would he feel that a piece of himself is missing? And what about poor Nail, who was only ever a convenient power boost, a stopgap on the way to Piccolo's full reunion with his other half. I'd like to imagine that if this kind of story were to take place, Piccolo would merge back with Kami but might let Nail return to Namek where he belongs. This may all sound too dramatic for a Toriyama story, but Piccolo was always one character Toriyama afforded a degree of depth and pathos to.

Sure. But I think if SSB were on the cards, we would have seen it in a preview already. We would have seen anything showing that this is indeed taking place during Super's timeline. I've said this since the beginning, but I view Whis and Beerus to be the official mascots of the DBS era of Dragon Ball. The fact that they've been noticeably absent, paired with each trailer showing imagery straight from the Buu arc tells me that this isn't just another arc in DBS. Either we're in for time traveling shenanigans, or this is an alt-universe story.

Either way..If Goku and Vegeta could just power up to SSB, then what is even the point of having them Chibi-sized? I mean why even make such a big deal about a new show if it's just going to be business as usual?
I never expect the miniturization of the characters to seriously affect their combat abilities. Heck, in this trailer alone we're still seeing big ki stuff happening.

That said, I'm not even married to this being set during or sometimes in the events of Dragon Ball Super. My hunch is that this is actually before Dragon Ball Super, going based off of the focus on the Majin Buu arc and the designs of the characters.

Dragon Ball Super begins, what, five or six years after the Majin Buu arc? For all we know this series could take place a week after the Gokuu uses the Genki-dama to destroy Majin Buu, so I'm kind of curious if this is actually pre-Beers now.

If this is post Boo, pre BoG, I hope they use the yellow forms to their fullest before they're eventually outdone by the God forms. SS2 and SS3 especially need their time to shine.
True in GT the only time we saw SSJ2 was when Goku transformed into it to turn SSJ3. Other than that we never SSJ2 fight at all.
SSJ2 was forgotten in GT.

Healing items and technique didn't appear, we didn't see these:

- KibitoKai healing
- Dende healing
- Boo healing
- Oob healing (he has all of Boo ability and can communicate with Boo)
- No senzu beans

As for when Daima takes place, I guess we have to wait to find out. Although it is good to see SSJ form in the fight.

Re: Dragon Ball Daima trailer, October release date announced

My, So glad to finally see a trailer featuring voices and actual music, took almost a entire year for it ^^ I think we can now discard that theory about them recasting the characters with younger VAs, Nozawa said that she didn't want to stop voicing Goku after all, and for me she sounds very good here, but I understand who thinks that it sounds bad.
I knew that the "masked majin" thing sounded odd, the girl is indeed not the same creature as Majin Boo, they're indeed going to ignore the concept from the games of "Majin" being the name for the same race as Boo.
Glad to see that Piccolo and Vegeta are going to participate in the adventure, the new characters look interesting but I was really worried that Goku and Kaioshin were going to be the only ones to travel to this world, now I don't have to worry about that anymore.
I honestly also don't think it was necessary to use SSJ transformations in this, though I was already expecting for them to do it for obvious reasons, but damn this looks really good, the animators exploded in this, the visuals are absurd.
My only "real complaint" is that these villains...I don't know, but they are giving me strong Red Ribbon army vibes, Gomah and the Kaioshin specially felt like Red and Black to me in this, but I could be wrong so let's wait it, just hope that for Toriyama's final DB work he made villains that are as memorable as the ones he made after the RR saga.
And now, still no Gohan or any hint of where this takes place in the timeline, but I'm honestly satisfied, I don't think they need to show anything anymore, now I just wait for the release.

As for the music, it sounds really good, though I was expecting something more like Makafushigi Adventure in style, this style reminds me of Sand Land's opening & ending songs.

Also, I believe we can assume that Sumitomo may not be returning for the score, he just finished working (or he's still working) in the soundtrack for a movie that is going to release in November, unless he worked on both scores at the same time, or worked on Daima's score prior to this movie's, I think we can expect that he's not going to be the score composer for this.
