Re: Unpopular DB opinions

I agree with ABED. That piece of music of the Wasserman dub when Goku arrives on Namek is pretty good. Heck, I'm even fond of the piece where Vegeta finds out that Gohan has a Dragon Ball. The Faulconer score just is too hardcore. At times the Wasserman score gets "edgy and hardcore", but...

Re: General questions about Dragon Ball Z

Saban clearly had a big influence on the overall direction of the dub. Also, in the credits, all of the people listed in the various music roles (ie music editor, music engineer etc) were Saban guys involved in stuff like MMPR. Saban had a new score composed at Funimation’s request, yes. Saban’s on...

Re: General questions about Dragon Ball Z

Oh i'm sure it was a cost-cutting measure, but I was under the impression the one of the reasons the Ocean cast couldn't return is because Saban abruptly pulled out of the syndication business and left Funimation high and dry. I have no idea if Saban dropped Funimation or vice versa but regardless ...

One man's weird is another man's norm. It's all a meaningless social construct in the end.

Re: Personal Thoughts on the Ocean Dub

Also again with saying Shuki Levy was the guy behind the Ocean dub's replacement score, when it was really Ron Wasserman who did and IIRC i don't believe Levy was credited or really had a direct hand in it. It's an honest mistake. Firstly, In 2013 Wasserman's DBZ involvement wasn't common knowledge...

Re: Yet Another Dub Error

So wait, you're telling me that the crappy, sloppily-done, rushed to market Orange Bricks are technically not even FINISHED!?! Yep. They literally used unfinished production materials when assembling the "Remastered" dub. It's a shockingly bad job. Yikes...as if I needed another reason no...

Re: Ocean Studios' "Dragon Ball Kai" dub seems to be coming...

Seriously, it's not like there is absolutely 0% chance Kai dubbed with the Ocean cast will ever release in any form whatsoever so making noise and spreading the word in those ways will at least get the message out in the event that someone does eventually take interest. I mean as of now it's not at...

Re: Dragon Ball Z "Composer" Shuky Levy accused of attempted murder by Sarah Brown

It's crazy how the people behind the English dub for Dragon Ball often turned out to be such disturbed individuals. First we have Bruce Falconer the credit-stealing hack. Then we have Sean Schemmel and his hilariously fragile ego. Vic Mignogna and his fiendish ways. Now the composer for the Ocean d...

Re: Nostalgia for the so-called dark ages of DB

Let me start this by saying I was born in 1997, which makes me 22 years old as of this posting. That being said, I never grew up during the heyday of DB. At least, not exactly. My experience from DB comes from my older cousin introducing it to me along with my grandmother getting me and my brother ...

it just sounds so goofy and sometimes it's like strangely really menacing ? it's weird. Yeah the aggressive menace is definitely what sticks out in my memory the most along with the heroic "Goku arrives" track mentioned above. While the Saban-era music was higher quality and felt far more...

Re: A question to those who saw the Saban dub long after the fact

Getting back to the original topic at hand, the Ocean dub is largely just a curiosity for me. I got into the series around the time that the redub starting to get going with the in-house cast, and my only exposure to the Ocean cast was the Over 9,000 meme and finding the odd old dub episode on YouT...

Would it be correct to say that the old Funi singles were an honest representation of what the show looks like?

Over the years, I've seen people say that these releases had the saturation levels increased, and sharpening filters applied. Of course, the Pioneer era singles from the late 90s also had all of the pre-existing syndication edits. But, when I compare the singles to Funimation's subsequent releases, ...

Re: A question to those who saw the Saban dub long after the fact

It's hard to pinpoint where the Pioneer dub would fit in all of this though. As far as I know the three movies were dubbed in 1997. I believe Dead Zone got a winter release and World’s Strongest and Tree of Might were released in spring of 1998. I know Sleeping Princess came out in 1998, but I beli...

Re: A question to those who saw the Saban dub long after the fact

Perhaps Funimation felt comfortable enough after the first season’s relatively good ratings that they wouldn’t be getting the axe and anticipated a season 3 when they started season 2. https://variety.com/1996/scene/vpage/saban-to-sell-new-kangaroo-x-men-1117466224/ This article from December 1996 ...

A question to those who saw the Saban dub long after the fact

What was your reaction? Most people who disparage that dub on YouTube seem to be the types who were first exposed to the Orange Brick redub of the first two seasons. I only saw a few episodes of it prior to 2005, when they were the only game in town, so I would barely count as someone who grew up on...

Re: How many series exist for you?

I can understand Faulconer (although since Funi broke up with Faulconer I'm not sure what the money situation is there) and especially Johnson and Menza... but Wasserman was Saban's thing. Are you sure Funi was making money off the Wasserman score instead of Saban? Wasserman actually did DBZ as a f...

Re: How many series exist for you?

I think you could make the argument that GT is also the same series as DB/Z. Although it had no Manga equivalent, it was produced immediately after Z ended with the largely same staff as the previous anime, and was part of the original 1986-1997 broadcast. I know some will say it isn't because of h...

Re: The Trimark (BLT) Dub of Dragon Ball

And I know the Saban era actually finished production in 1997 but compounded with their “test dub” of Sleeping Princess in Devil’s Castle it just seemed like Funimation was moving independently away from Saban and Ocean. I always suspected this. If you check the credits of the episodes that aired i...
