Re: Dragon Box Sound Quality: My Conclusion
Well, this satisfies my curiosity as to why the Dragon Ball series, even on the Dragon Boxes, sound so noticeably more muffled than other series of the same era. I guess I don't blame them though. They couldn't have predicted it would one day be a viable option to give the entire series a home relea...

Re: Anime Vs Manga: What's up with the Dragon Ball GT hate?
The Saiyans were just a bunch of barbarian natives in the DBZ flashback, but weren't they fully armored space invaders (led by King Vegeta ) in DBGT and the OVA? That's a pretty big contradiction. In Baby's flashback, they emerge from their pods in the same ragged cavemen clothes they have in Kaiou...

Re: Anime Vs Manga: What's up with the Dragon Ball GT hate?
To put an earlier argument to rest, I watched the episode with the Tsufuruian flashback the other day. It does show the Saiyans coming to the planet in ... some kind of round pods. But they're barely onscreen for a second. It's not worth scrutinizing them in anyway. After that, Baby makes several co...

Re: The Shonen Summit: How DBZ Got Screwed Up podcast
I was speaking less about the shifts within one arc, and more about the changing identity of the series/franchise as it went on. Just look at the way the thing was portrayed at the beginning, and then the way it was being presented in, say, 1992, where it had indeed become something "hardcore,&...

Re: FUNimation's General Blue Censorship?
I don't think Toriyama had anything to do with this one, unless he specifically penned all the random Penguin Village filler.
But yeah, that's why I've always hated this bit. I mean, I get it. It's Japan. It's the '80s. But still, yikes.

Re: FUNimation's General Blue Censorship?
The Obatchaman thing is one Toei addition I've never really been cool with, to be honest.
As for Funimation's censorship, how much can you really dance around it? No matter how you write the dialogue, Blue's about as gay as Bora is Indian, which is ... incredibly blatantly and stereotypically.

Re: The Shonen Summit: How DBZ Got Screwed Up podcast
Without having listened to the podcast, what exactly is their definition of a "screwed-up franchise"? Is it the wildly divided American fanbase? That's pretty fair, but also easily traceable. The only real question there is whether or not it would have a large American fanbase at all had t...

Re: The gap between #17 and #18?
Huh. I was never under the impression either was more powerful than the other. I never used to think so either, but when I went through my Dragon Box 4, I do remember a few lines changing my mind. Anyway, he can't be stronger by all that much. They're siblings, have the same height and build, and b...

Re: Anime Vs Manga: What's up with the Dragon Ball GT hate?
Didn't the new "Plan to Eradicate the Super Saiyans" feature show yet another slightly different version of the Saiyan/Tsufruian war? As long as it doesn't show them arriving in Freeza-style pods, it's good with me. The Saiyans had to get to Planet Plant somehow; doesn't matter when. As f...

Re: Anime Vs Manga: What's up with the Dragon Ball GT hate?
I think the main issue with GT was all of the changes that they did. They pretty much retcon the whole Saiyans origin and retcon the conpect of dead people can't have their bodies destoryed in the after life. What retcon? Kaiou introduces the entire Tsufuruian concept in the Saiyan arc of Dragon Ba...

Re: Unintentional funny moments
Alternately, any time a character does the "Peeasu, peeasu!" thing (which is often up until Piccolo Daimao appears). My favorite is Goku doing it after he wantonly murders two Red Ribbon pilots. What's that? If you've watched Dragon Ball at all recently, you'd know. It's a very Japanese t...

Re: The animation during Goku vs. #19
Yep. Any later episode done by Last House and/or Uchiyama look terrible. The animation is stiff (even for anime), the characters are undetailed, the lines are thick, etc. And they have at least one episode in most of the big fights. They handle part of the Cell vs Goku fight, for example, which was ...

Re: Best death
Kuririn's first death. I didn't remember it being so emotional. The anime really builds it up, and not in a particularly corny way. I got through that part of the series with my girlfriend over winter break, and knowing that she had no idea what was coming was just ... geez. It really hits you, and ...

Re: WeeklyTubeShow (Dragon Dub Z)
I was actually wondering where the source footage was from. I thought it might actually have been a Japanese Kai DVD at first, because of the widescreen and the pristine image. (Looking at the full resolution screencap, I can clearly see the grain though.)
Did you crop the Dragon Box footage?
