Re: Is Dragon Ball cynical at its core?

and Toriyama’s “poison” comments. Could you elaborate here? http://www.kanzenshuu.com/translations/wired-japan-1997-akira-toriyama-interview/ “Right. There’s how, basically, Son Goku from Dragon Ball doesn’t fight for the sake of others, but because he wants to fight against strong guys. So once Dr...

Re: Something I thought of regarding the SS2 Gohan scene in Japanese

To put it as simply as possible, would an author ever write something like this if he intended to show the character's reluctance to fight? "I want to beat Cell", to me the answer is no, and since it's written by Toriyama it makes a lot of sense, android 16's speech was deliberately made t...

Re: Something I thought of regarding the SS2 Gohan scene in Japanese

Well then explain why was it stated clearly like day that Gohan wanted to use his hidden power, why did he entirely ignore android's 16 last words and went to enjoy the fight, didn't think of trying to bring him back, and why was even android 16 chosen as a messenger though he was a nobody to Gohan...

Re: Were deaths meaningless / with no tension after the Namek story arc?

This is a massive dropping of context. They didn't happen right after the other and they aren't laughing. They are celebrating Goku getting on Namek within a few days time. Given what they just went through, hearing that Goku will be arriving to help is cause for celebration. The only dropping of c...

Re: Something I thought of regarding the SS2 Gohan scene in Japanese

Yes, Gohan was trying, but his heart clearly wasn't in it because of his reluctance. Even Cell chastised him for it - when he tried to attack him after that very same snippet, Cell shut him down and told him "If you're gonna get mad, do it FOR REAL!" And then 16 has to tell him to let it ...

Re: Is Dragon Ball cynical at its core?

Indeed it is, I've realized it when I got to the fishing trip in the manga since the author decided to ruin even something as simple as that, so I've reread with the assumption that it is, the poison is already there in chapter 1. Attempted murder of a child treated as something funny :silent: . htt...

He said the exact same thing, he doesn't know how to use it, doesn't look like extreme reluctance to me.

But you're not acknowledging Gohan's own extreme reluctance to go SS2. He's literally afraid to do it.
What reluctance? He actively wanted to use his power, he was already fighting back as soon as Cell refused his offer.

https://i.imgur.com/iX1tEAP.jpg What's with that page? There are two panels from a completely different scene randomly stuck to the bottom. The fact that they're in normal b&w and not greyscaled is a bit of a tip-off... They are not randomly stuck, because the latter happens right after the for...

Re: Were deaths meaningless / with no tension after the Namek story arc?

No, they were since chapter 1 when Bulma tried to murder Goku on a whim and it was played off as a gag, it never changed since then, here's how relevant death was on Namek when ressurection wasn't so easy yet.

Pardon my ignorance, but what is shota Goku? I don't watch the Japanese version of the show so i'm not familiar with the Japanese terms.
Shota is a Japanese slang on cutesy, young males, in this case kid Goku from GT.

Re: MistareFusion's Dragon Ball Dissection! (Updated 12/31/18!)

There are real bonds. Goku and Kuririn. What's not to love? It's a bizarre mix of cynical, earnest, mean spirited and wholesome all at once. The thing that Toriyama writes characters only to be wholesome and happy when they actually shouldn't by any human standards. Goku and Kuririn isn't a real bo...

Re: MistareFusion's Dragon Ball Dissection! (Updated 12/31/18!)

I'd say is Toriyama sending a message that Gohan isn't a goody two shoes, he has his own poison. That interview where he complained about Goku I'm pretty sure that he said to the interviewer beforehand poison being inside DB not just single character related, and the answer didn't really touch the ...

Re: Son Gokū a manipulative character....?

He's the kind of guy who knows how to act or what to say to get what he wants, a lot of the time he is able to read others which is already visible at the beginning when he notices that the turtle wants to be brought to the sea or that Bulma wants to follow them because she's scared. The most obviou...

Re: If Goku is such an inadequate spouse, then why...

I know it's an in-universe thread, but the way you've structured your question suggests you're looking for out-universe answer so here goes. That's because Toriyama is an extremely cynical writer and Dragon Ball characters are just dehumanized caricatures. I can give you some more examples of this s...
