Re: Official On-Going Dragon Ball Super Movie Thread: "Broly"

That's kind of a lie cause Dragon Ball is still being consumed mostly by teens/adults. TV ratings say so, merch says so, the previous two movies ticket sales says so and this movie's sales will as well.

Kids like DB, don't get me wrong but they are not the make or break part of the demographic.

Re: Does Dragon Ball have the largest, least toxic, fandom in existence of fictional franchises?

If you're referring to how people reacted to Caulifla farting her way through SSJ transformations, that wasn't misogyny. I remember someone on the dbz subreddit cried sexism when everyone bitched because we thought Caulifla was going to hit Super Saiyan Blue in the Tournament of Power. We don't car...

Re: Does Dragon Ball have the largest, least toxic, fandom in existence of fictional franchises?

A large part of the fandom went full misogyny mode when Kale, Caulifla and Ribrainne were introduced. The only difference is that none of their seiyuus were harassed due to the language barrier as mentioned earlier unlike what happened with Star Wars. But, that language barrier certainly didn't prev...

Re: Official On-Going Dragon Ball Super Movie Thread: "Broly"

Positive as a whole. The battle scenes were praised a lot as expected, especially the final battle. Some people on 5ch were bothered by the battle power scaling and Freeza characterization, but it seems the majority had a good time.

Re: Official On-Going Dragon Ball Super Movie Thread: "Broly"

So at the basic level, it is a mix of DB Minus, bunch of Movie 8 references and straight up ripping off Movie 12. Lmao Toriyama. Not that surprising, but still pretty funny. JP fan reactions will be fun to follow.

Re: Who are the best written couple in DB?

Kale and Caulifla. No contest here. I mean, the bar's pretty low as it is. The het couples range from godawful to whatever. Kale/Caulifla has bit of chemistry going and their interactions have all been pleasant. I hope they actually go forward with it in future stories and not back out like cowards.

Re: How many years do you expect the current DB Renaissance to continue?

Toei said OP, Precure and DB are their flagship titles, so uh yeah probably never. They will continue doing what they are doing now. TV series for 2 yrs., then follow up with a movie while the manga and spin-off series continue, then back to TV and repeat this formula over and over again.

Re: Was Yu Yu Hakusho trying to copy Dragon Ball Z?

I'm used to the "every shounen is a rip-off of Dragon Ball cause the MC likes to eat, wears an orange outfit, has wacky hair" and all that bullshit, but this is next level. By this logic, Dragon Ball was trying to copy Slump cause it had the same main staff, music composer and most of the ...

Re: DBS demographic breakdown

Old DB as well. JUMP titles for the most part skew teens/adults. OP, HeroAca and Haikyuu in the list for example also have higher teen/adult viewers than kids. Shingeki, while not JUMP is another shounen series that has a similar fanbase.

DBS demographic breakdown

f-ism conducts a survey every year by utilizing data collected via entertainment audience research system or "eb-i". It sheds light on the demographics of the industry, audience viewing habits etc. Super useful. They provide a free sample, so here's DBS demo during Oct 2015 - Mar 2016 and...

It hasn't reached Star Wars levels of bad with blatant racism and misogyny, but it is definitely not welcoming to all people. So, yeah I'd say its bad.

Re: Official On-Going Dragon Ball Super Movie Thread: "Broly"

Because majority of women weren't treated as people if history is anything to go by, so its no surprise there weren't many female warriors. Those expectations and actions from men are a billion percent rooted in sexism.

Re: How popular is Dragon Ball in comparison to DBZ?

In Japan, it had better average ratings than both Z and GT. So, yeah it was super popular. This modern era has definitely marketed everything on the Z portion and forward cause of more marketing potential (maybe?) cause the early series didn't have transformations and all that shit. It is no surpris...

Re: Where would you rank DB among "Shounen" Anime

Can Neon Genesis Evangelion qualify as a Shonen anime? I've always thought that anime screams Seinen. The anime's demo was never specified to my knowledge, but yeah the majority of the fanbase are teens and adults in their 20s/30s. The manga though was published in a shounen magazine, but later mov...

Re: Where would you rank DB among "Shounen" Anime

Probably somewhere around #15-20. I have only seen 20 or so battle shounen though. And, most of them kick Dragon Ball's ass with ease. It is alright for what it was in the 80s-90s. But, many of its competitors back then(YYH, Saint Seiya, Slam Dunk etc) executed the shounen formula better than it eve...

Re: Has the role of female characters improved?

Kind of. Caulifla, Kale and Ribrainne were much needed additions in this excessively male dominated franchise. That's always been one of my big problems with this franchise. So, I'm glad they finally gave us female Super Saiyans. Also, Ribrainne is a ton of fun. #18 got a decent role too although wi...
