Re: Is Goku a bad person?
That depends on how you define "bad person". There's not a malicious bone in Goku's body, but are bad intentions really a prerequisite to being a bad person? Goku has repeatedly made decisions that explicitly endanger other people simply to satiate his desire for a good fight, and that lev...

Is the "Z" in Dragon Ball Z supposed to be pronounced "zee" or "zed"?
Obviously, it's pronounced "zee" when localized to the Americas, but I mean originally. The katakana used for the "Z" in the title spell out "zetto" in romaji. Is that a Japanese approximation for the Receive Pronunciation of the letter, i.e. "zed"?

Re: How do you define a good dub?
Accurate subs with the only deviations being where the japanese cannot be properly translated into English or whatever language the dub is. Stuff like Kakarot instead of Kakaroto is fine though... so them needing to play around with Veggeto/Vegito/Vegerot might be a bit more understandable. But Kur...

Re: How do you define a good dub?
Please, lets not mince words, Samurai Pizza Cats makes so much changes it is very much a thing of it's own. It is NOT A GOOD DUB because it goes way beyond what a dub is supposed to do. Its a great show but ITS NOT A GOOD DUB. That's where your entire mindset is misframed: Dubs are already their ow...

Re: How do you define a good dub?
A "good dub" and an "accurate dub" are not necessarily the same thing. For an admittedly extreme example, Samurai Pizza Cats is an absolutely fantastic dub of Cat Ninden Teyandê ... but the script was completely rewritten from scratch, based on nothing but what the writers could ...

Re: Filler Material
For all of its faults, I honestly think that the anime filler helps create a more fleshed-out world for the Dragon Ball franchise than the manga did by itself.

Re: The All-Purpose "Translation Request" Thread
A somewhat complicated request regarding Daizenshuu 6: I know for the first page of each movie's section it has a short statement regarding the movie's place (or lack thereof) in continuity. For all the movies up through DBZ Movie 6, those statements are translated on the main Kanzenshuu site. If so...

Re: A critical ranking of 39 Dragon Ball games: Celebrating FighterZ's success!
The biggest downside to these review aggregators is that it took them so long to appear. As a result, the early history of video game reception has gone widely undocumented, making comparisons with games of that era difficult. For example, I would love to be able to include all the early Japan-only ...

No, we go along with it because they're still charming and endearing despite their moral faults (well, Goku is, at least). And, again, they're martial artists. As you said, saving the Earth isn't their goal. Your subsequent questioning of "why root for them?" implies that you can only roo...

You don't have to be a hero to decide that letting an extinction-level threat go willfully unchecked is the wrong thing to do. You just have to be a non-sociopath.ABED wrote:But Goku isn't a hero in the western sense.

Re: Regarding Goku's character in the dub...
Really, when you get down to it, Goku is an awful person who just happened to do some good things. I mean, he and Vegeta are indirectly but deliberately responsible for the entirety of the Android/Cell arc by stonewalling the idea of hunting Gero down immediately after Trunks leaves. I know people h...

Except it damns Toriyama and Toei along with FUNi. Not a very charitable assessment all around.Kamiccolo9 wrote:Is "almost gave him character depth!" really that good of a recommendation? That's damning with faint praise if I've ever seen it.

Re: Was the dub right to alter Goku's character?
Yeah, the use of "was the dub right?" in the thread title was, unfortunately, going to raise some intense responses. It implies that a singular view must be correct, and thus implies that an argument needs to be had on which view that is. And then, more subtly, some people could easily see...

Re: Was the dub right to alter Goku's character?
One also has to take into account cultural translations. Not every bit of dialogue can be appropriately conveyed when translating to another country's audience; some examples come from attempts to translate some of Rooster Teeth's properties for audiences in Japan. That's why I said "as practi...

Re: Was the dub right to alter Goku's character?
Ultimately, this question comes down to one's individual viewpoint on the nature of adaptation. Do you believe that a dub's sole job should be to reflect the original language as accurately as is practical? If so, then no, Goku's characterization in the dub is an inexcusable transgression. Any willf...

A critical ranking of 39 Dragon Ball games: Celebrating FighterZ's success!
For those who follow such things, Dragon Ball FighterZ is a rather important game: It is the most critically-acclaimed game to come out of the franchise, and by a wide margin. Not only that, but even in the larger context of video games in general, its reception is notably positive. It's not just a ...

Oops, I forgot something for my watch-through list: Between Battle of Gods and DBK 99, I would read the Viz release of Jaco the Galactic Patrolman , since it hasn't been adapted into animation (yet?). And kudos to Sani for making a Japanese equivalent. The inclusion of officially untranslated media ...

Personally, the best watch-through order for me is by release date. Specifically, this is a list of all officially dubbed/subbed material prior to Super in the proper order... Re: I tried to make sense of the complicated and convolluted Dragon Ball Canon
First, what would it mean for a story to not be its own canon? Second, look back at where the term originates. There's Biblical canon and from my research, the first time it was applied to a work of fiction was Sherlock Holmes. SAC Doyle never used the term. It was applied after the fact. It's safe...
