On the other, this completely contradicts everything we thought we knew about Dragonball (Planet Vegeta looking like a dump, 3 year old Goku, Bardock's entire character being different, Frieza disregarding Super Saiyan as nothing but a lege...

Anything's possible at this point. They'd rather do outlandish things like "X's secret brother/sister/lover" than bother with actual movies and such. Hopefully that's changed though!

As others have said here, wishing for immortality is out of character for Goku. In fact, the one person in the main cast that was actively trying to gain immortality doesn't seem to even care about it past the Namek Saga, Vegeta.

I'd say the fact that Videl's beating sticks out is because she's nowhere near as tough as the characters we're used to seeing getting their butts kicked. If that was Yamcha or Krillin in her place it wouldn't have been nearly as memorable.

Vegeta's beating from 18 always stood out to me.
