Re: Ocean Studios' "Dragon Ball Kai" Dub Turns 10; Still Unreleased

For those unaware, Elise Baughman was kind enough to upload the Kamehacon 2 Ocean dub panel to her Youtube channel (Kai is talked about at 20:20, and near the end at 47:25): https://youtu.be/qB3C_PvlX2Q?t=2845 You can really see Scott's frustration with it & it's a little heartbreaking as he cle...

Re: Ocean Studios' "Dragon Ball Kai" Dub Turns 10; Still Unreleased

Matt Smith as Tien Shinhan - Rejected in favour of the Calgary actor who played the role in the Blue Water dubs, Brendan Hunter. Steve Olsen as the narrator - No major roles, only incidental voices. ( https://twitter.com/radiosteveo/status/1112704115103023104?s=21 ) Minor nitpick but the wording of...

Re: Yet Another Dub Error

I made a quick video showcasing the different versions: https://streamable.com/l6ixr Note how in the remastered dub of 169 Goku's line of "I'm glad you think so" doesn't match what Gohan just said, because Gohan's line was changed, but Goku's wasn't, even though Goku's line in the flashba...

Re: Your ideal Dragon Ball sequel.

I wrote a post relating to this a long time ago but basically I would trash Super and use EOZ as a jumping-off point to essentially redo the GT era as a high budget movie that provides us with a final send-off for the series (similar to what Dark Side of Dimensions was for Yu-Gi-Oh Duel Monsters). T...

Re: What is the story behind the Westwood Dub?

Westwood Media was never a "sister studio" of any kind, this is misinformation that grew out of Westwood Media going defunct in the early internet days, and an unrelated "Westwood" recording studio existing in Vancouver. Well, first off I don't think anyone has the facts or sour...

Re: What is the story behind the Westwood Dub?

Was it a project initiated partly by the original Ocean VAs, wanting another stab DBZ, perhaps with the intention of besting the ‘99 Funi dub? The Vancouver voice actors had little insider information on what was going on with post-Saban DBZ dub, aside from perhaps Terry Klassen (who, as far as I'm...

Re: Least favourite performances in your dub

I grew up with a mish-mash of dubs so there's a lot I dislike. Funimation/Saban/Pioneer Ocean Z dub: - Ian Corlett's Master Roshi. I just found it too whiny most of the time and actually preferred it when they cast Terry Klassen later on. - Don Brown's Elder Moori. It's more or less the same voice h...

Re: Ocean Studios' "Dragon Ball Kai" dub seems to be coming...

For starters, for those who've seen episode 108, just listen to the actors themselves. It's clear that some of them are a little "rusty" at playing the characters, particularly Drummond and McNeil. They don't sound quite like they did when they had previously left off at episode 53 a few ...

Re: Ocean Studios' "Dragon Ball Kai" dub seems to be coming...

I personally don't think a broadcast of the Broly movie is any indication for the future of the Kai dub. It's just an airing of a new-ish movie which happens all the time. At most I think they might pay attention to the ratings to see if there's a major spike of interest from viewers but even then t...

Re: Ocean Studios' "Dragon Ball Kai" dub seems to be coming...

Very surprised by Brian's answer there regarding censorship, he seems more confident about it this time too, not like he was in his interview with Geekdom a while back - there he seemed more hesitant to speak about the subject. I'm still a little doubtful we'll actually hear them saying Hell in the ...

Re: Ocean Studios' "Dragon Ball Kai" dub seems to be coming...

"Premiered in Europe" You make it sound like it aired in every European country. Strange thing to nitpick. We all know the dub aired in English speaking parts of Europe and can infer what I meant here. I think you don't know or forgot that the Ocean dub was also aired in Netherlands with ...

Re: Ocean Studios' "Dragon Ball Kai" dub seems to be coming...

Actually it wasn’t Funimation who added those extra SFX to their dub. It was Faulconer Productions themselves who added them, as Scott Morgan pretty much confirmed himself in this reply to a post here. Only show that Funimation themselves added extra SFX to was OG Dragon Ball, and even then it was ...

Re: Do you believe Nadolny would’ve improved if she came back?

I think Nadolny was miscast as Gohan, her voice was just too raspy and gruff for the character. Her Kid Goku was passable but she's far from an ideal casting choice in my opinion. Saying she was the best Kid Goku in the English dub is faint praise because there wasn’t really a good Kid Goku in Engli...

Re: Ocean Studios' "Dragon Ball Kai" dub seems to be coming...

I wasn't aware that Toei Europe wasn't around until 2004, so now I'm wondering who sent the tapes to the UK and what led to the switching off between the Ocean and Funimation dub for the Buu saga? Was it Canada and America, Toei in Japan, or even the AB Groupe somehow? AB were distributing it to th...

Re: Ocean Studios' "Dragon Ball Kai" dub seems to be coming...

Before I start, I want to note something. I recently read an article on anime news network (I can't find the particular article now link now) that mentioned that it is not uncommon for Japanese production companies to request foreign distributors to send dubbed masters back to Japan. When they are ...

Re: Ocean Studios' "Dragon Ball Kai" dub seems to be coming...

It's a solid theory, but you're placing too much stock in AB Groupe's involvement. Apart from handling European distribution and providing video tracks for the final four episodes, AB Groupe really had nothing to do with the actual production of the dub in Vancouver. While it's certainly never been...

Re: So I watched an episode of the Westwood dub

Gohan only got like 2 lines that episode so hard to say but Henderson seemed a bit off to me. Like she was subtly trying to sound more like Nadolny but ugh why? Though I didn’t hear enough to make a fair judgment. Seems a bit of a weird criticism to make. She's doing her own Gohan voice but adjuste...

Minor nitpick but I wouldn't frame it that was rejected - he likely never auditioned for this as he seems to have quit acting long ago and moved into a different line of work.

Re: Ocean Studios' "Dragon Ball Kai" dub seems to be coming...

This is probably all crazy complicated but hopefully it is far simpler to get Ocean Kai out there. Mainly because I still suspect Toei did actually produce it themselves. But that is still unknown. I say simpler cause it then cuts out one more person to deal with. I think. Well, indeed. If Toei pro...
