I really don't think that Dragon Ball has any sort of concept of canon. However, GT featured characters from the movies, which as far as I'm aware, were fairly explicitly outside of the manga's continuity, so if GT was "canon" to anything, it was just Z.

I just got into Dragon Ball earlier this year so I never got to see Super as it was airing. I really, really would love for it to return as it quickly became one of my favorite series. The Heroes fanfic can't replace it.

Yes, I find this to be a bit of a weird take. Goku's the soul of Dragon Ball. Without him, the series would lose something and possibly fade into irrelevancy.

More than likely the anime will cover it when it returns. I have a feeling one of the reasons they covered Battle of Gods and Resurrection F is so that people would know that those particular movies are acknowledged as part of Super's continuity since previous movies were always their own thing.
