Is that it's one giant meme. It's very close to leaning on the fourth wall. It's like the Toei interns all grew up on Dragon Ball Multiverse or a couple doujins and drew inspiration from them. Whereas DBGT was Toei forcing themselves on Toriyama's world, with their own interpretations and developments, DBS is them literally giving the fans what they "want." What they've been talking about on online forums for years. The jokes, the references, even down to the marketing of contracting noteworthy members of the DB doujin circle to do actual spin offs. Yamcha winning a baseball game in his infamous death pose was the moment Toei wanted us to know that they are one of us.
In other words, Dragon Ball Super is Metal Gear Solid 2.

It's more like them drawing inspiration form ideas fans created for 20+ years..
Therr isn't much newness one can bring to such an old series which has been discussed and had fanfiction for years..
Internet's a treasure trove for ideas directly related to Dragonball, made by fans for fans and it's free..
It's a win win situation, now that it's not purely fanfiction but combined with Toriyama's twists
