I don't see why they wouldn't be allowed to let us see it though. I mean I'm able to watch most of their other trailers like the Orange Bricks, Dragon Boxes, Level sets etc.

On a side note I'm really hoping this turns out to be Region 2. I have a multi-region player but only set up to my small TV. Plus a lot of people don't have multi-region players. Someone mentioned before that Toei won't allow Funi to make their DVDs Region 2 because it's compatible with Japanese players . But I really don't see why that should be a problem here. I mean why would anyone in Japan want to import an English dubbed, heavily edited version of DBZ with no Japanese subtitles?

Also I don't see why people importing Funi's DVDs to Japan is such a big deal. A lot of the profits of Funi's products end up going to Toei anyway so what difference does it make? Funi used to make all their Dragonball DVDs Region 2 compatible from when they released Ginyu Assault all the way to the GT Yellow Bricks. It's only since the DB Blue Bricks and the Z movies and Dragon Boxes that they've started this dumb Region 1 and 4 only policy.

When it comes to a release like this set I can see your point, however when it comes to uncut anime that's a completely different ball park, the reason Toei doesn't want FUNi's DVD's R2 compatible anymore is because Toei doesn't want the Japanese to reverse import the American versions of their shows, now why would Toei care at all you may ask, the reason they care is because at the end of the day the US anime DVD's are usually a lot cheaper and you get a whole lot more for your money compared to their Japanese counterparts (most japanese single anime releases have only one disc with somewhere around 2-6 episodes max for about $40+ sorta like how old anime VHS's in America used to cost $30+ for only 3 episodes, FUNi's releases now usually have 2 disc's apiece containing around 13 episodes for around the same price maybe less), so if the U.S. anime DVD's are R2 compatible Toei believes that the Japanese will buy FUNi's releases over their own official releases, that's why Toei doesn't want FUNi DVD's R2 compatible anymore.
If anyone has any of the DB/DBZ/DBGT or Maho Tsuaki Sally Japanese single DVD's that they'd be interested in selling send me a PM and I'll see if we can work something out. ;).

Kinda like how Sunrise originally wouldn't let Bandai release the original Mobile Suit Gundam subbed in America.

It's weird. I never grew up on the Ocean Dub and I'm more of a fan of Z Kai, but I really want this collection the more I think of it. It's just a shame they never dubbed some of the episode after 53.

That's because some of those were also made available in Australia (PAL region) which permitted FUNimation to grant access to international members to view the content of the trailer videos.

They just can't allow it for everyone to visualise, this is business.

Ocean did dub more going from the Android saga to the end of Z except it was no longer good due to Saban and Funimation not being involved and a low budget and rushed recording schedule.

I see people asking if the rest of the Ocean dub of the Freeza saga - Buu saga could be released on home video if this does well.

Well, from the episode where FUNimation took over the voice acting all the way up to the arrival of Trunks, no Ocean dub exists for that area of DBZ. Which is yet another reason I'm looking forward to the Ocean dub of Kai. We'll finally be able to see (or, perhaps more appropriately, hear) Brian Drummond's Vegeta and Scott McNeil's Piccolo doing some scenes that I REALLY wanted to see them do.
A "rather haggard" translation of a line from Future Gohan in DBZ, provided to FUNimation by Toei:
"To think of fighting that is this fun...so, it was pleasant fight, as many as, therefore is a feeling which is good the fight where."

I re-uploaded the Trailer for all those unable to view it in their area.

Also, I think amazon may have flubbed their listing with a release date of August 13th, instead of the 20th.

First, why do I have a nostalgia boner when I dislike the Ocean dub? Two, why is Funimation supporting Ocean?

They're not really supporting Ocean, since FUNi owns it.

I find interesting that the prevailing opinion is that Pauline Newstone was the worst dub Freeza, which I find odd. I don't love the voice, but I don't hate it either. I think the voice was based mainly on Freeza's appearance rather than his personality but I enjoyed it. The big problem I had was the writing.

To clarify further, this is FUNimation's dub. They own this, they made it, they produced it. This is how they introduced Dragon Ball Z to the English-speaking world. In the days before they hired their own local talent, they hired the Ocean cast to work for them. From a production standpoint, there is no such thing as an "Ocean dub." Ocean is just a voice studio hired by two different companies at different times to do voice work for different versions of Dragon Ball Z. So FUNimation is the company that introduced Ocean to DBZ in the first place.

While I REALLY dislike this release overall and believe it's a severe step back in terms of what FUNimation is doing with the franchise (Moving it forward to being an honest adaptation of an anime rather than a hackjob like the material in this release) I will say that trailer was actually really good. It effectively got the point across that this is a specialty product, it's not intended to be a "Definitive" release of anything but the Original Broadcast Dub.

Props on the fake VCR shot off video feel to it too. And... were those brief flashes of shots from the "Collectors Book" they're putting out.... taken from the Dragon Books?... it looks like they're re-purposing images from the DBooks...

Don't you think the poor picture quality is part of the nostalgia, though?

I kinda wish the Dragon Box Trailer had opened with a clip from a fan-sub or something. Then it could cut to a younger DB fan typing furiously at their computer for about a decade before the Dragon Box magically appears next to them. The DB fan then walks over to his shelf, shoves all the old releases on the floor and places the Dragon Box right in the center of his shelf....eerr, never mind. :shifty:

Anyone know how younger fans are receiving this? Is there more confusion than when the Dragon Boxes and Kai came out?

It's not a step back because they aren't doing anything besides releasing old material.

You're really defending this release no matter what, aren't you?

I'm really happy for this release, it saves me having to buy the Pioneer DVD's :P I hope they do release this here in the UK, I reckon it'd sell quite well.

I'm calling a spade a spade. It's not a step back. I can't fathom why anyone would consider a one-off a step back. They aren't going in any direction, they are just catering to a niche market. You are blowing this way out of proportion. Not sure what you mean by "no matter what". I know what's in it.
