I don't know if this is the right forum to post this in, but I just saw these on Toei's website and thought I'd share. They're pics of some of shirts that were available at the Toei Animation booth at Jump Fest '16.

I don't know what surprises me more, that the shirts are early Dragon Ball focused, or that they're featuring the girls of the series.

You could wear these in Japan amongst Otaku and nobody would bat an eye. That's a testament to the strength of the sub-culture and how open it is.

These are pretty tame, but I think it has more to do with Otaku subculture having deeper roots in sexuality and men and women fans alike having matured to a plane were sexuality is something they are open with. Just look at Comic Market and how so many fan works sold there are R18+.

She wouldn't serve any other purpose other than to be a gag. Even then, Toei wouldn't know how to handle the character properly to make the gag work.
