Post by TLM Reviews » Wed Jun 15, 2016 8:47 pm

I was thinking off getting either the original DVD's that funimation released years ago a long with the VHS. I just don't know the differences in each of them and was wondering if any DBZ fan owns or knows about this release. Also is there JAP with subs??

The first 17 volumes of the VHS tapes and DVDs are edited, Ocean/Saban dub only. The first three films (Dead Zone, World's Strongest, and Tree of Might) were only released uncut on VHS, but there is both uncut English-dubbed versions and Japanese subtitled versions for each film. These films were also released uncut on LaserDisc and DVD containing both audio tracks and subtitles.

Starting with volume 18 and onward for the VHS tapes, FUNimation released both edited and uncut versions of the episodes. You'll be able to tell if they're uncut by looking for (Uncut) next to the title on the slipcover. The only Dragon Ball Z episodes that never saw an official edited release in the United States were volumes #52 (EARTH'S LAST HOPE), #53 (AWAKENING), #54 (SACRIFICE), and #55 (NIGHTMARE'S END), which included the last 13 episodes of the Cell Games Saga.

The Australian equivalents of these VHS tapes released by Madman were only released in an edited format.

The North American DVD volumes were only released in an uncut format and include both English and Japanese audio tracks and include subtitles for each beginning with volume 18. The Australian DVDs, while uncut, do not include a Japanese audio track or subtitles until volume #62 (4.6 - JUNIOR DIVISION).

The two TV specials were released in both edited and unedited formats on VHS, and uncut only on DVD.

Movies 1-3 were re-released on DVD uncut with both a Japanese audio track and an alternate English dub containing FUNimation's in-house Texas cast and an American replacement score in the "First Strike" movie box set. The Japanese subtitles are different from the subtitles found on the original Pioneer release, but from what I understand they are both equally faithful to the original Japanese dialogue.

Movies 4-9 were released in both edited and uncut formats on VHS and DVD, although the former only contains the English dub. Movie 10 was only released uncut on DVD, but did see both an edited and uncut release on VHS.

Movies 11-13 only ever saw uncut DVD releases, all three containing both English and Japanese audio tracks and subtitles. Movies 12 and 13 did air on both Cartoon Network and NickToons in an edited format, however.

Finally, 2013's "Rock the Dragon Edition" DVD Collector's Set featured the edited versions of the first three films as they were presented on Cartoon Network. The three episode version of "Tree of Might" that aired during the show's original syndication in 1996-1997 has yet to be seen, though.

TL;DR: The North American volumes are uncut and contain the original Japanese audio track and subtitles beginning with Volume #18: Captain Ginyu: Assault. The Australian volumes are uncut beginning with Volume #18 (2.1): Captain Ginyu: Assault but only contain the original Japanese audio track and subtitles beginning with Volume #62 (4.6): World Tournament: Junior Division.
